Persistent organochlorine pollutants in children working at a waste-disposal site and in young females with high fish consumption in Managua, Nicaragua

The aim of this study was to assess persistent organochlorine pollutant (POP) levels in serum collected from children (11-15 years old) working and sometimes also living at the municipal waste-disposal site in Managua, located at the shore of Lake Managua, and in nonworking children living both nearby and also far away from the waste-disposal site. The influence of fish consumption was further eva

Teenagers as victims in the press

Research into press reporting on young people has tended to concentrate on young people as offenders. In contrast, this article focuses on press coverage of teenagers as victims. Reports in two Swedish newspapers (a morning broadsheet and an evening tabloid) were studied over a period of four months and subjected to a qualitative analysis of discourse on teenagers as victims of various forms of vi

Long-term survival and glial differentiation of the brain-derived precursor cell line RN33B after subretinal transplantation to adult normal rats

The potential use of in vitro-expanded precursor cells or cell lines in repair includes transplantation of such cells for cell replacement purposes and the activation of host cells to provide "self-repair." Recently, we have reported that cells from the brain-derived cell line RN33B (derived from the embryonic rat medullary raphe and immortalized through retroviral transduction of the temperature-

Search for excited neutrinos at HERA

We present a search for excited neutrinos using e(-) p data taken by the H1 experiment at HERA at a center-of-mass energy of 318 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 15 pb(-1). No evidence for excited neutrino production is found. Mass dependent exclusion limits are determined for the ratio of the coupling to the compositeness scale, f/Lambda, independently of the relative couplings to the SU(2) a

Effect of high-temperature drying on spruce and larch Shape stability, mechanical properties and mould growth

I denna avhandling har inverkan aShape stability, the ability of the wood to retain its shape, is one of the most important parameters when using timber as a building material and for other applications. Generally, timber undergoes changes in dimensions and shape when its moisture content is changed. However, this can often not be tolerated in constructions and thus, methods to improve the shape stability have to be found. In th

Thermal insulation of multi-layer clothing ensembles measured on a thermal manikin and estimated by six individuals using the summation method in ISO 9920

The thermal insulation of a clothing ensemble can be measured with a thermal manikin or estimated according to ISO 9920. In ISO 9920 there are insulation tables for a number of clothing ensembles with specified garments and other tables for a variety of single garments. The insulation of single garments can be summated to estimate the insulation for a clothing ensemble. However, when a clothing en

1 What is the impact of osteoporosis?

A body of evidence points towards a close connection between susceptibility to fractures and osteoporosis. The incidence of osteoporotic fractures, both in absolute figures and in age-specific figures, has increased worldwide throughout this century. Although some reports show that the age-specific incidence is levelling-off, there will be a continuously increasing number of individuals with such

Catalytic effects in propene ammoxidation achieved through substitutions in the M2 phase of the Mo-V-Nb-Te-oxide system

M2-type phases M3TeO10 (M = Mo and V), belonging to the Mo-V-Nb-Te-oxide system, were prepared by substituting to various degrees the M-metal with W, Ti, Nb or Fe, and Te with Ce. The compositions were characterized by BET, XRD and XPS and were studied for propene ammoxidation. The variations of the unit cell parameters with substitution reveal that the orthorhombic, pseudo-hexagonal M2 structure

Internal Stresses in Wood Caused by Climate Variations

Popular Abstract in Swedish Avhandlingen fokuserar på materialbeteende hos trä, tvärs fiberriktningen, när ändring av materialets inre fukttillstånd sker. Virkestorkning är en tillämpning av denna grundforskning på materialnivå. En annan tillämpning är för trä-konstruktioner (balkar, pelare, ramar mm.) oskyddade mot klimatvariationer som har sådan geometrisk utformning att det vid belastning uppstThis thesis is the result of a series of investigations on the hygro-mechanical behaviour of clear wood in the radial and tangential directions. Approximately half of the effort put into the investigations was concentrated on laboratory tests while the remaining effort was concentrated on modelling the observations made in the tests. The results from the investigations are published or submitted f

Under 1700-talets senare hälft organiserades stickningsindustrin av förThe aim of this dissertation has been to examine the growth, development, and organisation of the knitting industry in southern Halland during early modern times. This proto-industrial enterprise was conducted primarily via a putting-out system in the goods districts. Wallen's estate in Våxtorp parish played an active role in the enterprise already from an early stage. During the latter half of th

A recursive parametrization of unitary matrices

A simple recursive scheme for parametrization of n-by-n unitary matrices is presented. The n-by-n matrix is expressed as a product containing the (n-1)-by-(n-1) matrix and a unitary matrix that contains the additional parameters needed to go from n-1 to n. The procedure is repeated to obtain recursion formulas for n-by-n unitary matrices.

Graded quasi-Lie algebras of Witt type

In this article, we introduce a new class of graded algebras called quasi-Lie algebras of Witt type. These algebras can be seen as a generalization of other Witt-type algebras like Lie algebras of Witt type and their colored version, Lie color algebras of Witt type.

Long-term and high-dose trials of enzyme replacement therapy in the canine model of mucopolysaccharidosis I

Enzyme replacement is a potential therapy for mucopolysaccharidosis I (MPS I), a lysosomal storage disorder caused by alpha-L-iduronidase deficiency. Previous work showed improvement in the tissues of MPS I dogs treated intravenously for 3 months with recombinant human alpha-L-iduronidase (25,000 units or approximately 0.1 mg/kg/week). We have now treated an MPS I-affected dog for 13 months to ass

Reduced case fatality among hospitalized children during a war in Guinea-Bissau: a lesson in equity

BACKGROUND: During a recent armed conflict in Guinea-Bissau, we observed a marked decline in the case fatality among hospitalized children at the only paediatric department in the country. AIM: To analyse the causes behind the observed fall in case fatality. MATERIAL: All children hospitalized at the only paediatric department in the capital of Guinea-Bissau. The war cohort comprised all children

Searches for invisibly decaying Higgs bosonswith the DELPHI detector at LEP

Searches for HZ production with the Higgs boson decaying into an invisible final state were performed using the data collected by the DELPHI experiment at centre-of-mass energies between 188 GeV and 209 GeV. Both hadronic and leptonic final states of the Z boson were analysed. In addition to the search for a heavy Higgs boson, a dedicated search for a light Higgs boson down to 40 GeV/c(2) was perf

Of the 7 mrad horizontal wiggler fan emitted from the new superconducting multipole wiggler, the central 2 mrad will be used and split in three parts. The central 1 mrad will be used for a tunable station optimi

Annual costs of treatment for venous leg ulcers in Sweden and the United Kingdom

The aim of this study was to estimate costs of treating venous leg ulcers in Sweden and the United Kingdom during 1 year and to quantify costs in different health states, The costs of treating four different types of venous leg ulcers were estimated for 52 weeks by a stochastic health economic model, which simulated resource use data obtained from prospectively collected patient data, expert panel

Community assembly in experimental Grasslands: Suitable environment or timely arrival?

It is hard to defend the view that biotic communities represent a simple and predictable response to the abiotic environment. Biota and the abiotic environment interact, and the environment of an individual certainly includes its neighbors and visitors in the community. The complexity of community assembly calls forth a quest for general principles, yet current results and theories on assembly rul
