Allergen-Induced Accumulation of CD68(-), CD123(+) Dendritic Cells in the Nasal Mucosa

Background: Dendritic cells are antigen-presenting cells central to the immune system. They activate and orchestrate the innate and the adaptive immune systems. This phenotypically diverse group can be further divided into 2 subsets, the CD11c(+) myeloid dendritic cells (mDCs) and the CD123(+) plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs). The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of allergen expos

Collagen XII and XIV, New Partners of Cartilage Oligomeric Matrix Protein in the Skin Extracellular Matrix Suprastructure

The tensile and scaffolding properties of skin rely on the complex extracellular matrix (ECM) that surrounds cells, vasculature, nerves, and adnexus structures and supports the epidermis. In the skin, collagen I fibrils are the major structural component of the dermal ECM, decorated by proteoglycans and by fibril-associated collagens with interrupted triple helices such as collagens XII and XIV. H

Evaluation of adaptation strengths of CARE Dose 4D in pediatric CT

The motivation of this study is the general lack of knowledge regarding the efficiency and the appropriate use of the adaptation strengths of Siemens automatic exposure control system CARE Dose 4D. The purpose was to evaluate the effect on radiation absorbed dose using different adaptation strengths of CARE Dose 4D in three routine pediatric CT protocols. A pediatric anthropomorphic whole body pha

A Map Is Not a Territory: Making Research More Helpful for Sustainable Consumption Policy

The need to make consumption patterns more sustainable is widely acknowledged, yet effective policies for sustainable consumption are lacking. This article examines Nordic policy makers' views on why sustainable consumption research is difficult to apply in policy practice. We draw on the knowledge brokering literature to outline how the challenges of knowledge utilization in policy are connected

Simulation, Manufacturing, and Evaluation of a Sonar for a Miniaturized Submersible Explorer

Single-beam side-scan sonar elements, to be fitted on a miniaturized submersible, are here simulated, manufactured, and evaluated. Finite element analysis simulations are compared with measurements, and an overall observation is that the agreement between simulations and measurements deviates from the measured values of 1.5 to 2 degrees, for the narrow lobe angle, by less than 10% for most models.

Effects of chronic leptin administration on nitric oxide production and immune responsiveness of greenfinches

Leptin and nitric oxide (NO) are both important messengers in intra- and intercellular communication systems in vertebrates. Several studies have demonstrated an involvement of both substances in the immune response. Here we tested the effects of chronic leptin and anti-leptin treatments on the NO production and phytohaemagglutinin- (PHA) induced cutaneous inflammatory response in a wild passerine

Clinical outcome and microvascular blood flow in VAC® and Sorbalgon® treated peri-vascular infected wounds in the groin after vascular surgery - an early interim analysis.

Vacuum-assisted wound closure (VAC®) therapy is considered to be superior to conventional dressings in the treatment of peri-vascular groin infections after vascular surgery at our department. Therefore, we wanted to perform an early interim analysis of clinical outcome in these seriously ill patients at risk for amputation and death. Patients were randomised to either VAC® (n = 5) or Sorbalgon® (

Cognitive behavior therapy versus interpersonal psychotherapy for social anxiety disorder delivered via smartphone and computer: A randomized controlled trial

In this study, a previously evaluated guided Internet-based cognitive behavior therapy for social anxiety disorder (SAD) was adapted for mobile phone administration (mCBT). The treatment was compared with a guided self-help treatment based on interpersonal psychotherapy (mIPT). The treatment platform could be accessed through smartphones, tablet computers, and standard computers. A total of 52 par

Population Trends in Percutaneous Coronary Intervention 20-Year Results From the SCAAR (Swedish Coronary Angiography and Angioplasty Registry)

Objectives The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics and outcome of all consecutive patients treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in an unselected nationwide cohort over the past 2 decades. Background Over the last 20 years, treatment with PCI has evolved dramatically, but the change in patient characteristics has not been well described. Methods We included all pa

Analysis of manganese and iron in exhaled endogenous particles

Many full-time welders experience some sort of respiratory disorder e.g., asthma, bronchitis and metal fume fever. Thus, welding aerosols are thought to cause airway inflammation. There is a need for markers of welding aerosols in exposure assessments, and as most welding aerosols contain manganese and iron, these metals may possibly be used as an indicator. We have previously developed a novel no

Combined SAXS/UV-vis/Raman as a Diagnostic and Structure Resolving Tool in Materials and Life Sciences Applications.

In order to diagnose and fully correlate structural, chemical, and functional features of macromolecules and particles in solution, we propose the integration of spectroscopy and scattering on the same measuring volume and at the same time in a dedicated sample environment with multiple probes. Combined SAXS/UV-vis and SAXS/Raman information are employed to study the radiation damage effect in pro

Current Options and Future Possibilities for the Treatment of Dyskinesia and Motor Fluctuations in Parkinson's Disease

Dyskinesia and motor fluctuations affect up to 90% of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) within ten years of L-DOPA pharmacotherapy, and represent a major challenge to a successful clinical management of this disorder. There are currently two main treatment options for these complications, namely, deep brain electrical stimulation or continuous infusion of dopaminergic agents. The latter is ac

Optimising transparency, reliability and replicability: annotation principles and inter-coder agreement in the quantification of evaluative expressions

Manual corpus annotation facilitates exhaustive and detailed corpus-based analyses of evaluation that would not be possible with purely automatic techniques. However, manual annotation is a complex and subjective process. Most studies adopting this approach have paid insufficient attention to the methodological challenges involved in manually annotating evaluation - especially concerning transpare

Speakers' Acceptance of Real-Time Speech Exchange Indicates That We Use Auditory Feedback to Specify the Meaning of What We Say.

Speech is usually assumed to start with a clearly defined preverbal message, which provides a benchmark for self-monitoring and a robust sense of agency for one's utterances. However, an alternative hypothesis states that speakers often have no detailed preview of what they are about to say, and that they instead use auditory feedback to infer the meaning of their words. In the experiment reported

Triassic-Jurassic climate in continental high-latitude Asia was dominated by obliquity-paced variations (Junggar Basin, Urumqi, China)

Empirical constraints on orbital gravitational solutions for the Solar System can be derived from the Earth's geological record of past climates. Lithologically based paleoclimate data from the thick, coal-bearing, fluvial-lacustrine sequences of the Junggar Basin of Northwestern China (paleolatitude similar to 60 degrees) show that climate variability of the warm and glacier-free high latitudes o

Credit-Implied Equity Volatility – Long-Term Forecasts and Alternative Fear Gauges

This study discusses how to compute and forecast long-term stock return volatilities, typically with a five-year horizon or longer, using credit derivatives, and how such volatilities can be used in different areas ranging from the valuation of employee stock options and other long-term derivatives to the construction of market-based fear gauges in selected countries or market segments. In the emp
