A scattering and absorption identity for metamaterials: experimental results and comparison with theory
A dispersion relation for the combined effect of scattering and absorption of electromagnetic waves is presented for a large class of linear and passive material models. By invoking the optical theorem, the result states that the extinction cross section integrated over all frequencies is equal to the static limit of the extinction volume. The present paper focuses on an attempt to experimentally
Indications for first caesarean and delivery mode in subsequent trial of labour.
A previous caesarean delivery is no longer an indication per se for a subsequent, planned caesarean. We performed this study to identify women suitable for trial of labour after caesarean (TOLAC), investigating the association between the indication for the first caesarean and the risk of unplanned caesarean in the second pregnancy.
In the light of the province: Carl Slättne and his films
This article presents the work of Swedish film-maker and independent producer Carl Slättne (b. 1937) and analyses his film Urskogen eller kulturen!/‘Wilderness or Civilization!’ (1985). The film is discussed in relation to the concept of the essay film as it has been developed in recent writings by Laura Rascaroli and Timothy Corrigan. The formal devices of Slättne’s film are analysed and put into
The value of animal models in predicting genetic susceptibility to complex diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.
ABSTRACT: For a long time, genetic studies of complex diseases were most successfully conducted in animal models. However, the field of genetics is now rapidly evolving, and human genetics has also started to produce strong candidate genes for complex diseases. This raises the question of how to continue gene-finding attempts in animals and how to use animal models to enhance our understanding of
Phosphatised olenid trilobites and associated faunal elements from the Furongian (Upper Cambrian) of Västergötland, Sweden
Impaired nerve-mediated relaxation of penile tissue from caveolin-1 deficient mice.
Caveolin-1-deficient mice are characterised by a high vascular NO production. Because NO-dependent smooth muscle relaxation is considered to play an important role in penile erection, it was hypothesized that the erectile function would be affected by genetic ablation of caveolae. This study assessed penile erectile mechanisms in caveolin-1 knockout (KO) mice ex vivo. Immunofluorescence confirmed
Escherichia coli, fimbriae, bacterial persistence and host response induction in the human urinary tract.
Investigating relationships between Landsat ETM+ sensor data and leaf area index in a boreal conifer forest
Incidence of alcoholism in the revisited Lundby population, 1947-1997.
OBJECTIVE: The Lundby Study is a prospective longitudinal study of an unselected population consisting of 3,563 subjects. The Lundby Study started in 1947, and follow-ups were carried out in 1957, 1972, and in 1997. METHOD: In all four surveys, semistructured interviews were performed by psychiatrists. Registers, key informants, and case notes from hospitals and outpatient clinics supplemented the
Empirical Bayes and semi-Bayes adjustments for a vast number of estimations.
Investigators in modern molecular/genetic epidemiology studies commonly analyze data on a vast number of candidate genetic markers. In such situations, rather than conventional estimation of effects (odds ratios), more accurate estimation methods are needed. The author proposes consideration of empirical Bayes and semi-Bayes methods, which yield 'adjustments for multiple estimations' by shrinking
Evidence Supporting a Key Role of Lp-PLA2-Generated Lysophosphatidylcholine in Human Atherosclerotic Plaque Inflammation.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the level of lysophosphatidylcholine (lysoPC) generated by lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is associated with severity of inflammation in human atherosclerotic plaques. Elevated plasma Lp-PLA2 is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Lp-PLA2 inhibition reduces atherosclerosis. Lp-PLA2 hydrolyzes low-density lipoprotein-oxidized phospholipi

Low power radio transmitter
A transmitter consisting of a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) and power amplifier (PA) for the 400 MHz Medical Implanted Communication System band (MICS) was built in a standard 0.35-μm CMOS process. A push pull architecture was used for both the VCO and the PA. Two off-chip inductors were needed. The design was optimized for 400 μW output power at 3 V supply, which resulted in an efficiency o
Mobile learning as an alternative for competence development in industrial engineering and logistics
College students' drinking patterns: trajectories of AUDIT scores during the first four years at university.
AIMS: Changes in AUDIT score trajectories were examined in a student population during their first 4 years at a university, including high-risk consumers and a subsample of low-risk consumers. METHOD: 359 students were selected for the present study, comprising all high-risk consumers (the 27% with highest scores, i.e. 11 for males and 7 for females) and a randomized sample of low-risk consumers (
Everybody Hurts, Sometimes: Emotions and Dysfunctional Leadership
Accumulating mitochondrial DNA mutations drive premature hematopoietic aging phenotypes distinct from physiological stem cell aging.
Somatic stem cells mediate tissue maintenance for the lifetime of an organism. Despite the well-established longevity that is a prerequisite for such function, accumulating data argue for compromised stem cell function with age. Identifying the mechanisms underlying age-dependent stem cell dysfunction is therefore key to understanding the aging process. Here, using a model carrying a proofreading-
Hypothermia after cardiac arrest should be further evaluated-A systematic review of randomised trials with meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis.
BACKGROUND: Guidelines recommend mild induced hypothermia (MIH) to reduce mortality and neurological impairment after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Our objective was to systematically evaluate the evidence for MIH taking into consideration the risks of systematic and random error and to GRADE the evidence. METHODS: Systematic review with meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis of randomised
Large-scale Multiconfiguration Hartree-fock and Configuration-interaction Calculations of Isotope Shifts and Hyperfine Structures In Boron
A new isotope shift program, part of the multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock (MCHF) atomic structure package, has been written and tested. The program calculates the isotope shift of an atomic level from MCHF or configuration-interaction (CI) wave functions. The program is specially designed to be used with very large CI expansions, for which angular data cannot be stored on disk. To explore the capac
