Highly alkali-stable zwitterionic poly(arylene quinuclidinium) anion exchange membranes

Alkaline electrochemical energy conversion devices generally require anion exchange membranes (AEMs) which combine limited water uptake and swelling with high hydroxide conductivity and high resistance against attack by the ubiquitous hydroxide ions. In this context, zwitterionic AEMs may offer distinct possibilities to tune AEM properties in relation to purely cationic AEMs. Here, we report on th

Speaker judgments alone cannot diagnose syllable structure

The ease and consistency with which speakers of many languages provide direct judgments about syllable structure has been taken by scholars as evidence that these judgments are accurate and sufficient argumentation for an analysis of syllable structure in descriptive works. This paper questions whether the results of direct elicitation tasks reliably indicate a prosodic domain that is meaningful i

Situation, non-categorisation and variation : conveying nonclusion through text and image

Nonclusion is aligned with Universal Design and involves a critical approach to the categorisation of people. Specifically, nonclusion resists categorisations of bodies/roles and does not come with predefined or presupposed limits in terms of who something is meant for. While UD and nonclusion generally target Design and Architecture, this article explores how nonclusion can be conveyed through te

Teaching Universal Design : key content and course design

There is not much written about how to teach universal design (UD) in design educations. This article aims to present the didactic experiences from teaching three courses in universal design at Mid Sweden University and Lund University: the courses Design for freedom, Universal Design Theory and Universal design of digital accessibility. By comparing and contrasting our experiences in a qualitativ

Lost in digitalization? : municipality employment of welfare technologies

Introduction: Swedish municipalities face a number of daunting challenges; an aging population, the public’s increased demands and expectations on municipality services, and a strained economy to mention some. Welfare technology, a Scandinavian concept launched to promote digitalization, is seen as one solution to meet these challenges. Objective: Despite these promises, few welfare technology app

The Scandinavian Journal of Economics at 125 : a note from the editors

In honor of the 125th year of The Scandinavian Journal of Economics, this paper highlights some of the influential research published here in the last 25 years, considers current trends in the field, and describes a view of the future of this journal in the overall economics research ecosystem.

Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance and the risk of thrombotic events : Results from iStopMM, a prospective population-based screening study

Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is the asymptomatic precursor of multiple myeloma and related diseases but has also been associated with thrombosis. Prior studies have not been based on screened cohorts leading to bias. We assessed the risk of thrombosis in a cohort of 75 422 individuals over 40 years old who were screened for MGUS in Iceland. We also evaluated the associ

SMS121, a new inhibitor of CD36, impairs fatty acid uptake and viability of acute myeloid leukemia

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common form of acute leukemia in adults and the second most common among children. AML is characterized by aberrant proliferation of myeloid blasts in the bone marrow and impaired normal hematopoiesis. Despite the introduction of new drugs and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, patients have poor overall survival rate with relapse as the major challeng

Plant diversity enhances ecosystem multifunctionality via multitrophic diversity

Ecosystem functioning depends on biodiversity at multiple trophic levels, yet relationships between multitrophic diversity and ecosystem multifunctionality have been poorly explored, with studies often focusing on individual trophic levels and functions and on specific ecosystem types. Here, we show that plant diversity can affect ecosystem functioning both directly and by affecting other trophic

Multi-hazard life-cycle consequence analysis of deteriorating engineering systems

Probabilistic life-cycle consequence (LCCon) analysis (e.g., assessment of repair costs, downtime, or casualties over an asset's service life) can enable optimal life-cycle management of critical assets under uncertainties. This can lead to effective risk-informed decision-making for future disaster management (i.e., risk mitigation and/or resilience-enhancing strategies/policies) implementation.

Cultural Heritage, Our Shared Legacy: A Study of Value Co-Creation in Archaeological Site Management

Cultural tourism and cultural heritage management, while distinct disciplines with differing foci, are also inherently intertwined. However, conflicts between the two often arise due to the diverse number of stakeholders and interests involved in either the travel industry or the conservation and protection of cultural heritage. Despite this, cultural tourism can greatly benefit the conservation o

Distribution of infectious and parasitic agents among three sentinel bee species across European agricultural landscapes

Infectious and parasitic agents (IPAs) and their associated diseases are major environmental stressors that jeopardize bee health, both alone and in interaction with other stressors. Their impact on pollinator communities can be assessed by studying multiple sentinel bee species. Here, we analysed the field exposure of three sentinel managed bee species (Apis mellifera, Bombus terrestris and Osmia

An improved high-performance liquid chromatography process for the large-scale production of paclitaxel

The purification of crude (60.89% pure) paclitaxel was developed for high purity and yield. Several solvent systems, including methanol (MeOH), acetone, tetrahydrofurane, n-hexane, and water, were evaluated for precipitation efficiency. The best results were obtained using a mixture of MeOH and water, which was very effective at removing polar impurities, yielding a precipitate with 90.87% purity.

COPDVD : Automated classification of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on a new collected and evaluated voice dataset

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a severe condition affecting millions worldwide, leading to numerous annual deaths. The absence of significant symptoms in its early stages promotes high underdiagnosis rates for the affected people. Besides pulmonary function failure, another harmful problem of COPD is the systemic effects, e.g., heart failure or voice distortion. Howeve

Crystal structure of human inosine triphosphatase : Substrate binding and implication of the inosine triphosphatase deficiency mutation P32T

Inosine triphosphatase (ITPA) is a ubiquitous key regulator of cellular non-canonical nucleotide levels. It breaks down inosine and xanthine nucleotides generated by deamination of purine bases. Its enzymatic action prevents accumulation of ITP and reduces the risk of incorporation of potentially mutagenic inosine nucleotides into nucleic acids. Here we describe the crystal structure of human ITPA

Carlsson, Ingvar, 2023.

Comparison between the EKFC-equation and machine learning models to predict Glomerular Filtration Rate

In clinical practice, the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), a measurement of kidney functioning, is normally calculated using equations, such as the European Kidney Function Consortium (EKFC) equation. Despite being the most general equation, EKFC, just like previously proposed approaches, can still struggle to achieve satisfactory performance, limiting its clinical applicability. As a possible so
