Detection of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions and the design of time windows

A new approach to the design of time windows is presented for detection of transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE). The windows are designed with reference to a minimum mean square error criterion involving the correlation properties of the ensemble of responses. Latency information is introduced in the detection process by windowing at different scales that result from wavelet decompositio

Gastric MUC5AC and MUC6 are large oligomeric mucins that differ in size, glycosylation and tissue distribution.

Gastric MUC5AC and MUC6 mucins were studied using polyclonal antibodies. Immunohistochemistry showed MUC5AC to originate from the surface epithelium, whereas MUC6 was produced by the glands. Mucins from the surface epithelium or glands of corpus and antrum were purified using CsCl/4M guanidinium chloride density-gradient centrifugation. MUC5AC appeared as two distinct populations at 1.4 and 1.3 g/

Investigations of neutron deficient nuclei close to Sn-100 with EUROBALL

Excited states of nuclei in the vicinity of Sn-100 have been studied using: the EUROBALL detector array. Gamma-ray lines from Sn-103 have been identified for the first time, and a level scheme of low-lying excited states of Sn-103 has been established. New constraints on energies of single particle orbitals with respect to the Sn-100 core are obtained.

Electroencephalography and brain damage in preterm infants.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a sensitive method for detection of brain injury in preterm infants. Although the acute and chronic EEG changes are mainly non-specific regarding type of injury, they correlate with later neurological and cognitive function. In infants developing periventricular hemorrhagic or ischemic brain injury, acute EEG findings include depression of background activity and pr

Patient satisfaction after expenditure cutback and intervention to improve nursing care at a surgical clinic. At two-year follow-up.

Between 1991 and 1994 the number of beds in the surgical clinic at a central hospital in Southern Sweden was cut back by almost 50%. To develop the nursing care and to control the effects of the budgetary cuts, an intervention, including nursing care development, of an organization that would secure continuity in the nurse-patient relationship, individually planned care and quality assurance for a

Should tumor depth be included in prognostication of soft tissue sarcoma?

BACKGROUND: Most staging systems for soft tissue sarcoma are based on histologic malignancy-grade, tumor size and tumor depth. These factors are generally dichotomized, size at 5 cm. We believe it is unlikely that tumor depth per se should influence a tumor's metastatic capability. Therefore we hypothesized that the unfavourable prognostic importance of depth could be explained by the close associ

Non-invasive evaluation of lower airway inflammation in hyper-responsive elite cross-country skiers and asthmatics

Asthma-like symptoms and bronchial hyper-responsiveness (BHR) to methacholine are prevalent in competitive cross-country skiers. Whether these symptoms (ski asthma) in these athletes are caused by asthma remains uncertain. Bronchial responsiveness to adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP) and nitric oxide (NO) concentration in exhaled air, both indirect markers of asthmatic airway inflammation, were inv

Germinal Centers Regulate Human Th2 Development1

In the present study we demonstrate that all CD4+ T cells in human tonsil expressing the Th2-selective receptor chemoattractant receptor-homologous molecule expressed on Th2 cells (CRTH2) also 1) express high levels of CXCR5, and 2) display a transitional CD45RA/RO phenotype and consistently do not produce significant amounts of cytokines when immediately analyzed ex vivo. Hence, they represent pr

Ett samband att beakta : psalm, psalmbok, samhälle

Popular Abstract in Swedish Psalmer som gav ?adekvata uttryck? Hur detta i sin tur återspThe dissertation treats the relation between hymn, hymn-book and society by studying six motifs in The Swedish Hymnal (Den svenska psalmboken): mission, evangelization, diaconia, ecumenics, working life and "the new situation of youth". In the latest revision of The Swedish Hymnal, 1969-1986, hymns that gave adequate expression to these motifs were especially sought for. The dissertation demonstra

Rapid ATP-dependent priming of secretory granules precedes Ca(2+)-induced exocytosis in mouse pancreatic B-cells

1. The glucose and ATP dependence of exocytosis were investigated in single mouse pancreatic B-cells by monitoring changes in cell capacitance evoked by voltage-clamp depolarizations, infusion of high [Ca2+]i buffers or photorelease of caged Ca2+ or ATP. 2. In intact B-cells, using the perforated patch whole-cell technique, glucose (5 mM) increased exocytotic responses evoked by membrane depolariz

Blood group specific oligosaccharides from faeces of a blood group A breast-fed infant

Four different oligosaccharides were isolated from faeces collected from a blood group A, secretor, breast-fed infant. Three of these, GalNAc alpha 1-3[Fuc alpha 1-2]Gal beta 1-4Glc (A-tetrasaccharide), GalNAc alpha 1-3[Fuc alpha 1-2]Gal beta 1-4[Fuc alpha 1-3]Glc (A-pentasaccharide) and 1-3[Fuc alpha 1-4]GlcNAc beta 1-3Gal beta 1-4Glc (A-heptasaccharide) have previously found in urine, whereas Ga

Neutrophils and platelets accumulate in the heart, lungs, and kidneys after cardiopulmonary bypass in neonatal pigs

OBJECTIVE: Cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass elicits a systemic inflammatory response. An exaggerated response is associated with organ dysfunction and increased morbidity and mortality. DESIGN: The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the cardiopulmonary bypass procedure in itself results in accumulation of isotope-labeled platelets, polymorphonuclear neutrophils, and fib

A homozygous nonsense mutation (428G -> A) in the human secretor (FUT2) gene provides resistance to symptomatic norovirus (GGII) infections

Noroviruses (formerly Norwalk-like viruses) are a major cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide and are associated with a significant number of nosocomial and food-borne outbreaks. In this study we show that the human secretor FUT2 gene, which codes for an alpha(1,2)-fucosyltransferase synthesizing the H-type 1 antigen in saliva and mucosa, is associated with susceptibility to norovirus infection
