NMR studies of molecular mobility in a DNA-amphiphile complex

The molecular mobility in a hexagonal DNA-cationic surfactant complex is studied using H-1 and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The charge-compensated complex can swell in water up to a content of approximately seven water molecules per charge. The NMR measurements show that in the dry state the alkyl chains of the surfactant have the properties of a disordered solid with internal mot

Frequent activation of CArG binding factor-A expression and binding in N-methyl-N-nitrosourea-induced rat mammary carcinomas

We previously identified a positive transcriptional element identical to human Ha-ras response element ( HRE) within the promoter of the rat Ha-ras gene. We further identified CArG binding factor A ( CBF-A), a member of heterogeneous nuclear ribonuclear protein ( hnRNP) gene family, as a trans-acting factor that binds the HRE sequence with high affinity in rat mammary carcinoma cells. To determine

Estimation of conversion factors for fungal biomass determination in compost using ergosterol and PLFA 18 : 2 omega 6,9

Eleven species of common fungi from compost were analysed for their content of ergosterol and phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) after growth on agar media. Mean content of ergosterol was 3.1 mg g(-1) dw of fungal mycelium (range 1-24 mg g(-1) dw). Total amount of PLFAs varied between 2.6 and 43.5 mumol g(-1) dw of fungi (mean 14.9 mumol g(-1) dw). The most common PLFAs were 16:0,18:2omega6,9 and 18

Numerical simulations of unsteady fluid flow and heat transfer in a transonic turbine stage

In this work, a numerical study has been performed to simulate the unsteady fluid flow and heat transfer in a transonic high-pressure turbine stage. The main objective of this study is to understand the unsteady flow field and heat transfer in a single transonic turbine stage using an unsteady structured Navier-Stokes solver. For the time accurate computation, a fully implicit time discretization,

1.2 Cognition and learning.

This theme is concerned with the relevance and efficacy of educational methods adopted in dental schools while recognizing the influence of geopolitical issues in different countries and regions. Particular emphasis will be given to examples of best practices and innovations. Cognition and learning are dealt with in many different research areas such as education, psychology, cognitive sciences, b

Methods for alignment of multi-class signal sets

The paper treats jitter estimation for alignment of a set of signals which contains several unknown classes of waveforms. The motivating application is epileptic EEG spikes. where alignment prior to clustering and averaging is desired. The assumption that the signal waveforms are unknown precludes the use of classical techniques, notably matched filtering. Instead we treat two other classes of met

The Railway Station and The Interregional Traveller - traveller preferences and implications for the planning process

The interregional traveller’s preferences of railway stations, their service provision and location, are of interest in the discussion of station reinvention brought on by the introduction of high speed train traffic. A railway station is created by station as well as societal agents, and can be described as a synthesis of symbolic value, location, traffic, services and stationscape. Traveller pr

No title

In spite of the importance of legumes in Latin American diets, nutritional features of carbohydrates in these seeds are scarcely known. The purpose of this study was to assess the in vitro digestibility of starch in cooked powdered black beans, a common type of product in Mexico and Central America. The properties of a commercial product were compared to those of an experimental material obtained

Paul’s Interlocutor in Romans 2 : Function and Identity in the Context of Ancient Epistolography

Romans 2 has long been a crux interpretum. Among matters of dispute is the function and identity of Paul’s interlocutor(s) in the chapter. While scholars agree that the individual addressed in 2:17–29 is a Jew, there is no such consensus with respect to the identity of the person addressed in 2:1–5. On the one hand, the scholarly majority holds that this person is depicted as a Jew and that the sa

Physiological and pathophysiological regulation of ECL-cell activity

The ECL cells are endocrine/paracrine cells located in the acid-producing part of the stomach. They produce and secrete histamine and chromogranin A-derived peptides in response to circulating gastrin. Mobilized histamine stimulates acid secretion from adjascent parietal cells. The aims of the present investigation were to assess the usefulness of gastric submucosal microdialysis in studies of EC

EULAR evidence based recommendations for the management of hip osteoarthritis: report of a task force of the EULAR Standing Committee for International Clinical Studies Including Therapeutics (ESCISIT)

Objective: To develop evidence based recommendations for the management of hip osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: The multidisciplinary guideline development group comprised 18 rheumatologists, 4 orthopaedic surgeons, and 1 epidemiologist, representing 14 European countries. Each participant contributed up to 10 propositions describing key clinical aspects of hip OA management. Ten final recommendation
