Cryptic terminal chromosome rearrangements in colorectal carcinoma cell lines detected by subtelomeric FISH analysis.

Epithelial tumour karyotypes are often difficult to study by standard cytogenetic methods because of poor chromosome preparation quality and the high complexity of their genomic rearrangements. Subtelomeric fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) has proved to be a useful method for detecting cryptic constitutional chromosomal rearrangements but little is known about its usefulness for tumour cy

A large molecular size fraction of riverine high molecular weight dissolved organic matter (HMW DOM) stimulates growth of the harmful dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum

An increase in the concentration of riverine dissolved organic matter (DOM) has been observed during the last decades, and this material can stimulate marine plankton in coastal waters with significant freshwater input. We studied the effect of two size fractions of riverine high molecular weight dissolved organic matter (HMW DOM), isolated with tangential ultrafiltration, on the harmful dinoflage

Form vision in the insect dorsal ocelli: An anatomical and optical analysis of the Locust Ocelli

The dorsal ocelli are commonly considered to be incapable of form vision, primarily due to underfocused dioptrics. We investigate the extent to which this is true of the ocelli of the locust Locusta migratoria. Locust ocelli contain thick lenses with a pronounced concavity on the inner surface, and a deep clear zone separating retina and lens. In agreement with previous research, locust ocellar le

Variations in the geomagnetic dipole moment during the Holocene and the past 50 kyr

All absolute paleointensity data published in peer-reviewed journals were recently compiled in the GEOMACIA50 database. Based on the information in GEOMAGIA50, we reconstruct variations in the geomagnetic dipole moment over the past 50 kyr, with a focus on the Holocene period. A running-window approach is used to determine the axial dipole moment that provides the optimal least-squares fit to the

Survival after initial hospitalisation for heart failure: a multilevel analysis of patients in Swedish acute care hospitals

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Although national variation in short-term prognosis (that is, 30 day mortality) after a patients first hospitalisation for heart failure may depend on individual differences between patients, dissimilarities in hospital practices may also influence prognosis. This study, therefore, sought to disentangle patient determinants from institutional factors that might explain such variat

State-of-the-art: software inspections after 25 years

Software inspections, which were originally developed by Michael Fagan in 1976, are an important means to verify and achieve sufficient quality in many software projects today. Since Fagan's initial work, the importance of software inspections has been long recognized by software developers and many organizations. Various proposals have been made by researchers in the hope of improving Fagan's ins

Model-independent interpretation of NMR relaxation data for unfolded proteins: the acid-denatured state of ACBP

We have investigated the acid-unfolded state of acyl-coenzyme A binding protein (ACBP) using N-15 laboratory frame nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation experiments at three magnetic field strengths. The data have been analyzed using standard model-free fitting and models involving distribution of correlation times. In particular, a model-independent method of analysis that does not assume a

Effects of compost addition on extra-radical growth of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in Acacia tortilis ssp raddiana savanna in a pre-Saharan area

We studied the influence of added compost, consisting of Acacia cyanophylla leaves, on the production of extra-radical mycelia of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in natural stands of Acacia tortilis, which forms a desert savanna. Four different plots with different soil characteristics in terms of nutrient level and water-holding capacity were included in the study. The production of AM fungi wa

Autism and auditory brain stem responses

Objective: To study a controversy that has been discussed for more than two decades: whether or not children with autism have abnormalities affecting the cochlear nerve or the auditory pathway in the brain stem and, if so, to describe these abnormalities. Design: A group of 153 children and adolescents with autistic disorder were included in an investigation of auditory brain stem responses (ABR).

Logistics integration in horizontal mergers and acquisitions

In this article, we describe the integration of logistics after Mergers and Acquisitions (M&As) of firms within the same industry and, same industry level (i.e. horizontal M&As). First, we present a review of the literature on M&As and conclude that operational issues, in general, and logistics issues, in particular, have received little attention. In parallel with the literature revie

Persistent organic pollutants (POP) in a benthic omnivore - A comparison between lake and stream crayfish populations

We investigated the accumulation of PCB and DDT in crayfish populations in 10 streams in southern Sweden. The results were compared with an earlier study on crayfish in lakes from the same area. We found that the concentration of pollutants in crayfish did not differ between the two types of systems. Variation in body burden was higher in stream living crayfish probably because of the higher influ

Impact of low-dose prednisolone on bone synthesis and resorption in early rheumatoid arthritis: experiences from a two-year randomized study

Introduction Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have an increased frequency of osteoporosis, mainly because of increased bone resorption. Reduction of disease activity is suggested to reduce bone remodelling. It might also be possible that prednisolone treatment could cause this effect because prednisolone has been shown to arrest the development of joint destruction in early RA. Therefore, w

BIRADS classification in breast tomosynthesis compared to mammography and ultrasonography

This paper presents the Malmo Breast tomosynthesis project The tomosynthesis equipment is described as well as the patient selection and image acquisition. Special fucus is given to one of the studies of the project, which is a comparison of the diagnostic performance between breast tomosynthesis (BT), digital mammography (DM) and ultrasonography (US): tumor classification according to the BIRADS

An explicit spatial model of yeast microcolony growth

Here we present a single-cell-based model of cell-cell interactions in a growing yeast colony. We examine the influence of multiple factors on the colony morphology and switch to a foraging growth behavior. We find that the cell-growth inhibition by neighboring cells along with polar division growth patterns are the most significant factors driving the exploratory behavior of a colony.

An analysis of momentum and contrarian anomalies using an orthogonal portfolio approach

We use a latent factor approach to investigate if the momentum and contrarian profits, observed in the US stock market, should be considered as risk premiums or have nonrisk-based explanations. The model is also employed as a benchmark to assess the explanatory power of the traditional asset-pricing models in this context. Our findings show that the profits of the long-run contrarian strategy are

Exocrine pancreatic secretion in pigs fed sow's milk and milk replacer, and its relationship to growth performance

The objective of this study was to quantify and compare the effects of sow’s milk and 2 milk replacer diets (containing clotting or nonclotting protein sources) on exocrine pancreatic secretion, plasma cholecystokinin, and immunoreactive cationic trypsin in pigs. In addition, the relationship between exocrine pancreatic secretion and growth in milk-fed pigs was studied. In a changeover experiment,

Biocatalytic polyester acrylation-process optimization and enzyme stability.

An OH-functional polyester has been acrylated via transesterification of ethyl acrylate, catalyzed by Candida antarctica lipase B (CalB) in two different preparations: Novozym(R) 435 and immobilized on Accurel(R) MP1000. The batch process resulted in incomplete acrylation as well as severe degradation of the polyester. A high degree of acrylation was achieved by optimization through the applicatio
