When binding matters: An ERP analysis of the development of recollection and familiarity in childhood

Dual process models of recognition memory assume that memory retrieval can be based on two distinct processes: an assessment of a context-free feeling of familiarity or on the reinstatement of specific context attributes that have been bound together to form a representation of the study episode during encoding (recollection). Recent neurophysiological evidence suggests that familiarity and recoll

Comparison between three iron-powder topologies of electrically magnetized synchronous machiness

The finite element method has been used to analyze three topologies of iron-powder electrically magnetized synchronous machines. The first topology has the field winding placed in magnetically conducting end-plates, eliminating the need of slip-rings. In the second topology this is achieved by placing the winding above the outer rotor, and the third topology corresponds to the more conventional de

Evaluation and comparison of surface defects on a simplified model for the area around the fuel filler lid by simulation and experiments

There is a serious need in the automotive industry to predict surface defects in outer panels. Measures to prevent these defects can not be taken until a test part has been manufactured. This costs a lot in time and money. Within the present project stamping tools for a model part resembling the area around the fuel filler lid was developed. This is an area of the outer surface of a car, which is

Incidence and characteristics of distal radius fractures in a southern Swedish region

BACKGROUND: The incidence of distal radius fracture has increased substantially during the last 50 years according to several studies that estimated the overall incidence in various general populations. The incidence of fracture classified according to severity has not been well documented. The aim of this population-based study was to estimate the overall and type-specific incidence rates of dist

Community Management of inland Fisheries in India and Bangladesh

Inland fisheries have the characteractics of common-pool resources such as joint consumption and subtractability of resource flows. This creates problems of management either by state authorities or private owners. In recent years, community-based fisheries management projects have become widespread in developing countries and shown considerable success. This book deals with community-based fisher

Resource interfaces telling other stories about the commercial use of new technology: The embedding of biotech solutions in US, China and Taiwan

This study focuses on the embedding of new biotech solutions into three business landscapes - US, China and Taiwan. A "state-of-the-art" chromatography system tuned for operating in the step between laboratory and large-scale production is used as the common point of departure to investigate the supplier-user interfaces involving biotechnology in each of the three countries; the resource interacti

C4b-binding protein in Alzheimer's disease: Binding to Abeta(1-42) and to dead cells.

In the Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain, binding of Clq within the Cl complex, the initiating molecule of the classical complement pathway, to apoptotic cells, DNA and amyloid-beta (Abeta), the major constituent of senile plaques, can initiate complement activation. However, the extent of activation is determined by the balance between activation and inhibition. Fluid-phase complement inhibitor C4b-

Fruit and vegetable intake and overall cancer risk in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC).

BACKGROUND: It is widely believed that cancer can be prevented by high intake of fruits and vegetables. However, inconsistent results from many studies have not been able to conclusively establish an inverse association between fruit and vegetable intake and overall cancer risk. METHODS: We conducted a prospective analysis of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)

Early single-channel aEEG/EEG predicts outcome in very preterm infants.

Aim: To characterize early amplitude-integrated electroencephalogram (aEEG) and single-channel EEG (aEEG/EEG) in very preterm (VPT) infants for prediction of long-term outcome. Patients: Forty-nine infants with median (range) gestational age of 25 (22-30) weeks. Methods: Amplitude-integrated electroencephalogram/EEG recorded during the first 72 h and analysed over 0-12, 12-24, 24-48 and 48-72 h,
