Comparing radar satellites. Use of Sentinel-1 leads to an increase in oil spill alerts in Norwegian waters

Radar’s ability to detect oil spills through clouds, fog, and darkness is a significant advantage. Oil spill alert services using radar satellites have been in use in Norway for more than 25 years. After introducing two radar satellites Sentinel-1A and 1B in 2015-2016, the number of oil spill alerts has increased by 250% in Norwegian waters. This increase does not track the slight decreasing trend

L2 listeners benefit from audiovisual information in the processing of Swedish vowels - A speech comprehension experiment with L1 and L2 listeners

This thesis investigates the effect of visible articulatory movements on speech comprehension in L1 and L2 listeners of Swedish. Previous research found faciliatory effects on speech perception when speech was presented audiovisually in various settings and under diverse listening conditions for both L1 and L2 listeners. However, it is still not investigated thoroughly, how L2 proficiency affects

Esports brand shortcomings and opportunities

Purpose: Esports is a young industry that is experiencing an enormous boom in popularity. However, negative public perceptions are abundant, and there is a distinct lack of literature discussing esports from the branding perspective. This paper examines the shortcomings of esports brands and discusses opportunities to improve the public opinion on the industry. Methodology: Literature review, qual

The interest of reducing micropollutants, such as pharmaceuticals, in wastewater has increased due to increased knowledge around the risk of releasing micropollutants and improved analysing methods. Ozonation is an advanced treatment method which has the potential of removing these substances and it is therefore of interest to implement the technology in wastewater treatment plants in Sweden and o

Closing the loop: A study of Brand Activism in the Fashion Industry

Implications: The study provides practical implications for brand managers at fashion companies that wish to improve their branding and sustainable strategy while aligning with consumers’ value. The proposed framework recommends several strategies for handling image-vision gap.Original/Value: This paper contributes to the narrow body of research on a complex phenomenon: brand activism and customers’ perception. It presents a new framework for analysing the relationship between the brand vision and brand image. Furthermore, it compares and contrasts the brand activism of two different fashion companies.

The Good, The Bad and the Socially Responsible: Managing a Brand Reputation Crisis After being Cancelled

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the concepts of brand integrity, brand reputation, brand crisis management and communication strategies used by brands to combat the cancel culture setting. This exploratory study may also aid marketing practitioners in developing appropriate crisis management strategies in response to such a crisis. Research Question: what is the relationship b

Implementation of 3 stage Lobatto IIIC into the Assimulo package

In recent years, the popularity of discontinuous Galerkin methods has increased. As shown in [19], a result exists that states that the Discontinuous Galerkin space approximations (DG) are equivalent to the Lobatto IIIC Runge-Kutta method. This thesis therefore outlines the adaptation of Hairer’s implementation of the Radau IIA Runge-Kutta method to the Lobatto IIIC method, extended with an adapta

The Challenges of Globalisation to Education in Thailand: A Case Study of Socially Engaged Buddhism

The purpose of the study was to explore how the challenges from globalisation impact to education in Thailand. The study will scrutinise the consequences of the processes of globalisation in the scope of international media, political, social and economic crisis and look at how this consequences have impact on the education in Thailand focusing on the 1999 National Education Act. Müller’s theory (

Genetic resistance against the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae Sulzer) in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris)

Persikbladlusen är en bladlus som kan angripa bland annat sockerbetan och sprida virus med stora ekonomiska Myzus persicae Sulzer is viewed as a pest since it feeds on crops and spreads viruses which affect yield if not dealt with in time. M. persicae is a vector for over 100 viruses. One such virus is called Beet mild yellowing virus (BMYV) which affects the leaves of sugar beet. Symptoms start with chlorosis at the tip of the leaf and spread until the whole leaf is yellow, brittle and thick. This resu

Translating “gender” into Arabic: “jins ” , “jinsayn ” , “naw ʽ” or “jindar ”? A study of the translation of the concept “gender” in single- and multi-word expressions in feminist knowledge building

The terms “gender” and “sex” are central to feminist concerns. In English scholarship “gender” is disputed within and outside of feminism, despite its seemingly political correctness as an alternative to “sex” (Olson 2012; Gunnarsson 2011). This thesis aims to describe how “gender”, multi-word expressions with “gender”, and the derivative “gendered” are translated into Arabic target texts (TTs) by

Physiological consequences of growing up during a heatwave

Detta är viktigt för att förstå effekWith a changing climate comes warmer periods all around the year and an increase in the frequency of heatwaves. This affects animals in different ways. In birds, changes in environmental temperature during the developmental period before or after hatching, which is expected during heatwaves, can directly affect growth, metabolism and temperature tolerance of the offspring. We know little about how

Representing a Roman Portrait: An investigation of archaeological digitisation

This thesis aims to explore the uses for digitised information in the archaeological knowledge process, specifically on how it can be used when studying Roman portraits. By communicating the entire process from data acquisition and analysis to knowledge transmission and mediation, I hope to indicate strengths and weaknesses in the use of digital representations as a proxy for a physical artefact.

Rödslammet gör det omöjligt att mäta flödet korrekt, och kan i värsta fMany hydroelectric plants in Sweden are built using dams that are designed to leak a certain amount of water based on the material they are built with. The flow of the leakage water is measured to ensure proper function of the dams, but at several dams the measuring wells and drainage pipes are clogged with a red-brown sludge called Iron Ochre. The build-up of iron ochre is caused by specific bact

Theory of Time-Dependent Transport and Levitons in Nanowires

An interesting type of quasi-particles in solid-state materials are the so-called levitons. These are single- electron excitations above the Fermi-level that do not produce any hole states when carrying an integer multiple of the elementary charge. Levitons are produced when a quantum conductor is subjected to a time-dependent voltage pulse with a Lorentzian shape. The parameters of the voltage pu

The Sustainability Dance: Evaluating Perceptions on Sustainability within Europe’s Electronic Dance Music Sector

Cultural sectors increasingly constitute a larger part of any country’s economy and as such, should be included into sustainability research and analysis. A rapidly growing industry within the cultural sector, this paper examines Europe’s electronic dance music sector as a case study. 13 actors from the sector were interviewed to determine the extent of sustainability’s integration into the norms

This thesis looks into the possible potentials and challenges of the ethnographic comic book, as a way to reflexively present anthropological knowledge and fieldwork experiences. This is explored through the analysis of two anthropological graphic novel projects, Lissa: A Story about Medical Promise, Friendship and Revolution (2017) and Gringo Love: Stories about Sex Tourism in Brazil (2020). Both

Study of Generalizations of the Discrete Bak-Sneppen Model

In 1993, Per Bak and Kim Sneppen proposed a model of co-evolution between species, where survival of a particular species affects the survival of its neighbouring species. In the discrete case of the model, each species, or an entry in a set with periodic boundary conditions, is an element x_i ∈ {0, 1}, in the set of size N, where x_i represents the fitness. An entry of the least fitness is chosen

Behind Boundary Management: a look into Self-leadership and Autonomy when Working from Home

Working from home, previously framed as the same concept as teleworking, is a practice that had already increased in the past decades, but the current health crisis (SARS-2 COVID19) exacerbated the number of home workers all of a sudden (Popovici & Lavinia, 2020). Thus, many workers were forced to manage the boundaries between work and home without experience nor the physical boundary that is
