Från stadsarkeologi till urbanitetsarkeologi? Förslag till framtidsperspektiv

When medieval archaeology was formed as an independent academic discipline at Lund University in the middle of the 1960s, town archaeology was a vital part representing one of the orders in feudal society. It was established as a recognizable discourse and a major arena for excavating medieval archaeology. The article deals with the following issues: What kind of epistemological currents have infl

Dynamic generation of orbital quasiparticle entanglement in mesoscopic conductors

We propose a scheme for dynamically creating orbitally entangled electron-hole pairs through a time-dependent variation of the electrical potential in a mesoscopic conductor. The time-dependent potential generates a superposition of electron-hole pairs in two different orbital regions of the conductor, a two-particle interferometer in the quantum Hall regime. The orbital entanglement is detected v

Changes in key hypothalamic neuropeptide populations in Huntington disease revealed by neuropathological analyses.

Huntington disease (HD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder caused by expansion of a CAG repeat in the HD gene. Degeneration concentrating in the basal ganglia has been thought to account for the characteristic psychiatric symptoms, cognitive decline and motor dysfunction. However, the homeostatic control of emotions and metabolism are disturbed early in HD, and focused studies have identified a

Rho-guanine nucleotide exchange factors during development: Force is nothing without control.

The development of multicellular organisms is associated with extensive rearrangements of tissues and cell sheets. The driving force for these rearrangements is generated mostly by the actin cytoskeleton. In order to permit the reproducible development of a specific body plan, dynamic reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton must be precisely coordinated in space and time. GTP-exchange factors tha

A prospective evaluation of the diagnostic value of video capsule endoscopy in patients initially classified as irritable bowel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is characterized by chronic gastrointestinal dysfunction in the absence of detectable organic disease. The recently developed technique, video capsule endoscopy (CE), has been shown to be much more sensitive than traditional enterography in detecting mucosal changes in the small intestine. This study was performed to see if any earlier, not detectable by

Early development of retinal subtypes in long-term cultures of human embryonic retina.

Purpose: To study early signs of neuronal and glial differentiation in the human embryonic retina. Materials and Methods: 6.5-to 8-week-old human embryos were obtained from elective abortions. The neuroretinas were kept in culture as full-thickness sheets for 7-42 days. Results: The control retinas consisted of a neuroblast cell layer and a thin marginal zone. Most explants displayed presence of r

Can resting-state functional MRI serve as a complement to task-based mapping of sensorimotor function? A test-retest reliability study in healthy volunteers.

PURPOSE: To investigate if resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) reliably can serve as a complement to task-based fMRI for presurgical mapping of the sensorimotor cortex. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Functional data were obtained in 10 healthy volunteers using a 3 Tesla MRI system. Each subject performed five bilateral finger tapping experiments interleaved with five resting-state experiments. Following p

Various Antibody Clones of Napsin A, Thyroid Transcription Factor 1, and p40 and Comparisons With Cytokeratin 5 and p63 in Histopathologic Diagnostics of Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma.

Histopathologic classification of cancer in the lung is important for choice of treatment. Cytokeratin 5 (CK5), p63, and p40 are commonly used immunohistochemical markers for squamous cell carcinoma, and napsin A (NAPA) and thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF-1) are markers for adenocarcinoma of the lung. The aim of the present study was to evaluate these 5 markers and to compare different commerc

Robust correlation receiver for distance estimation

Many methods for distance estimation, such as the ultrasonic pulse-echo method, involve the estimation of a time-of-flight (TOF). In this paper, a signal model is developed that, apart from the TOF, accounts for an unknown, linear frequency dependent distortion as well as for additive noise. We derive a TOF estimator for this model based on the criteria of maximum likelihood. The resulting receive

Muscle strength and functional performance in patients with anterior cruciate ligament injury treated with training and surgical reconstruction or training only: A two to five-year followup.

OBJECTIVE: To study muscle strength and functional performance in patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury with or without surgical reconstruction 2 to 5 years after injury. Good muscle function is important in preventing early-onset osteoarthritis (OA), but the role of reconstructive surgery in restoring muscle function is unclear. METHODS: Of 121 patients with ACL injury included in

Inventory of Novel Animal Models Addressing Etiology of Preeclampsia in the Development of New Therapeutic/Intervention Opportunities.

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-related disease afflicting 3-7% of pregnancies worldwide and leads to maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. The disease is of placental origin and is commonly described as a disease of two stages. A variety of preeclampsia animal models have been proposed, but all of them have limitations in fully recapitulating the human disease. Based on the research question a

Oxidized Dextran as Crosslinker for Chitosan Cryogel Scaffolds and Formation of Polyelectrolyte Complexes between Chitosan and Gelatin.

Macroporous scaffolds composed of chitosan and using oxidized dextran as a crosslinker are produced through cryogelation. Introducing gelatin as a third component into the structure results in the formation of mesopores in the pore walls, which are not seen if gelatin is excluded. The mesoporous structure is explained by the formation of polyelectrolyte complexes between chitosan and gelatin befor

Reliability of Gait Performance Tests in Individuals With Late Effects of Polio.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the reliability of 4 gait performance tests in individuals with late effects of polio. DESIGN: An intrarater (between occasions) test-retest reliability study. SETTINGS: University hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty men and women (mean age 63 +/- 6.4 years) with clinically and electrophysiologically verified late effects of polio. INTERVENTION: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE

Neurite outgrowth and synaptophysin expression of postnatal CNS neurons on GaP nanowire arrays in long-term retinal cell culture.

We have established long-term cultures of postnatal retinal cells on arrays of gallium phosphide nanowires of different geometries. Rod and cone photoreceptors, ganglion cells and bipolar cells survived on the substrates for at least 18 days in vitro. Glial cells were also observed, but these did not overgrow the neuronal population. On nanowires, neurons extended numerous long and branched neurit
