Predictive screening for regulators of conserved functional gene modules (gene batteries) in mammals

Background: The expression of gene batteries, genomic units of functionally linked genes which are activated by similar sets of cis- and trans-acting regulators, has been proposed as a major determinant of cell specialization in metazoans. We developed a predictive procedure to screen the mouse and human genomes and transcriptomes for cases of gene-battery-like regulation. Results: In a screen tha

Effects of the taxation of wealth in Athens in the fourth century BC

In the fourth century B.C., Athenians were often accused of avoiding their civic obligations and of concealing their wealth.1 These attested cases show that economic behaviour in classical Athens could be affected by taxation. The purpose of the present study is to systematically explore the economic incentives resulting from the taxation of wealth. The first issue is the effects of the property t

Kinetics of self-assembled island formation: Part I - Island density

We present a rate equation model for self-assembled quantum dot formation, or Stranski-Krastanow growth. The model includes a kinetically defined critical wetting layer thickness and a subsequent wetting layer decomposition. With these rate equations, total island densities can be calculated under varying deposition conditions, i.e., temperature and deposition rate.

Effects of serial and parallel pore nonuniformities: Results from two models of the porous structure

The effects of parallel-type and serial-type pore nonuniformities on the effective diffusivity and the permeability of a porous material were evaluated, constant porosity and constant specific surface area being assumed. Two structural models were considered. In the first model, the porous structure was described as a bundle of cylindrical capillaries penetrating the whole thickness of the materia

DNA-ploidy in advanced gastric carcinoma is less heterogeneous than in early gastric cancer

This analysis of DNA-ploidy heterogeneity in advanced gastric carcinomas is consistent with the hypothesis of the emergence of a single aneuploid cell clone as a crucial mechanism in the progression from early gastric carcinoma to advanced gastric cancer. The prognostic value of DNA-ploidy in gastric cancers has been a matter of controversy. Tumour DNA-ploidy heterogeneity, the presence within the

Method for determination of methane potentials of solid organic waste

A laboratory procedure is described for measuring methane potentials of organic solid waste. Triplicate reactors with 10 grams of volatile solids were incubated at 55 degreesC with 400 ml of inoculum from a thermophilic biogas plant and the methane production was followed over a 50-day period by regular measurements of methane on a gas chromatograph. The procedure involves blanks as well as cellul

Antigen-specific beta-chemokine production and CD8(+) T-cell noncytotoxic antiviral activity in HIV-2-infected individuals

Human immunodeficiency virus-2 (HIV-2) is less pathogenic than HIV-1, and the disease progression in HIV-2-infected individuals seems to be similar to that seen in HIV-1-infected long-term nonprogressors. Cell-mediated immune responses and the production of noncytotoxic CD8(+) T-cell antiviral factors (CAF) and beta-chemokines have been correlated to protection against HIV-1 and associated with as

Lack of an association between Helicobacter infection and autoimmune hepatitis in children

An association between Helicobacter infection and autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) in children was investigated. The prevalence of antibodies to H. pylori did not differ between the AIH and the control group, (22% versus 14%), and antibodies to non-gastric Helicobacter were not detected in either group. H. pylori DNA was found in two AIH liver tissues, but Helicobacter was not cultured from any sample.

A molecule wired: Electrostatic investigation

We present calculations of ground state and excitation energies for ethene between metal electrodes. The model determines the effects of the electrodes by incorporating a heterogeneous and structured solvation model with the quantum mechanical description of the molecular system. The effects of the electrodes are of electrostatic origin and an external bias can be applied enabling a close connecti

Metabolism and force in hypertrophic smooth muscle from rat urinary bladder

Ten days of urinary outlet obstruction in the rat induced a threefold increase in bladder weight. Active force of control and hypertrophic bladder muscle strips was measured at varying PO2 levels after high-K+, carbachol, or electrical field stimulation. Highest force output was obtained with carbachol. Force per muscle area was lower in the hypertrophic muscles. The basal rates of oxygen consumpt

The disciplinary effect of the single market on Swedish firms

In the 1980s it became increasingly clear that the European Community market was still segmented by national borders because of non-tariff barriers to trade. A major objective of the Single Market Program in 1992 was to remove these barriers, thereby enforcing intra-union competition. In this paper, a panel of Swedish firm-level data is used to evaluate whether domestic market power has been curta

Coastline evolution at different time scales - examples from the Pomeranian Bight, southern Baltic Sea

Sedimentological and morphological changes on the upper and lower shoreface during relatively stable sea-level highstand conditions have been investigated in the Pomeranian Bight, southern Baltic Sea, at time scales ranging from storm events to millennia. In order to cover that variety of time scales, different methods have been applied. Seasonal variations in the morphology of the upper shoreface

MUC16 is produced in tracheal surface epithelium and submucosal glands and is present in secretions from normal human airway and cultured bronchial epithelial cells.

The gel-forming MUC5AC and MUC5B mucins have been identified as major components of human airway mucus but it is not known whether additional mucin species, possibly with other functions, are also present. MUC16 mucin is a well-known serum marker for ovarian cancer, but the molecule has also been found on the ocular surface and in cervical secretions suggesting that it may play a role on the norma
