Fracture analysis of perpendicular to grain loaded dowel-type connections using a 3D cohesive zone model
The strength and fracture behavior of dowel-type connections with stiff dowels loaded perpendicular to grain was studied by nonlinear 3D finite element (FE)-analysis. A cohesive zone model was used to model the perpendicular to grain fracture of the wood, i.e., failure by wood splitting along the grain. The influence of load eccentricity and dowel-to-loaded-edge distance was studied for a plate ty
Friendship network characteristics and psychological well-being in late adolescence: Exploring differences by gender and gender composition
Aims: The aim of the present study was to examine the association between friendship networks and psychological well-being among 19-year-olds. Methods: The data used was a random sample of Swedish individuals born in 1990 who answered a questionnaire in 2009–2010. Friendship networks were considered in terms of three measures of emotional support. Six statements about the individual’s emotional st
Introducing an equal rights framework for older persons in residential care
This article reconceptualizes residential care for older persons by introducing a framework developed from a rights-based principle of disability policies, the normalization principle. This principle is part of the social model and states that society should make available for people who have impairments living conditions that are as close as possible to those of “others.” Using the framework on t
Minimally modified LDL upregulates endothelin type B receptors in rat basilar artery
Minimally modified low density lipoprotein (mmLDL) is a well-known risk factor for cerebral vascular diseases and upregulation of endothelin type B (ETB) receptors plays key roles in the pathogenesis. The present study was designed to examine if mmLDL upregulated endothelin ETB receptors in basilar artery and its possible intracellular signaling molecular mechanisms. Rat basilar arteries were cult
Diffusion Tensor Imaging of Normal-Appearing White Matter as Biomarker for Radiation-Induced Late Delayed Cognitive Decline
Purpose: To determine whether early assessment of cerebral white matter degradation can predict late delayed cognitive decline after radiotherapy (RT). Methods and Materials: Ten patients undergoing conformal fractionated brain RT participated in a prospective diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging study. Magnetic resonance imaging studies were acquired before RT, at 3 and 6 weeks during RT,
Researching farmer behaviour in climate change adaptation and sustainable agriculture: Lessons learned from five case studies
Understanding farmer behaviour is needed for local agricultural systems to produce food sustainably while facing multiple pressures. We synthesize existing literature to identify three fundamental questions that correspond to three distinct areas of knowledge necessary to understand farmer behaviour: 1) decision-making model; 2) cross-scale and cross-level pressures; and 3) temporal dynamics. We u
Multiplicity dependence of two-particle azimuthal correlations in pp collisions at the LHC
We present the measurements of particle pair yields per trigger particle obtained from di-hadron azimuthal correlations in pp collisions at root s = 0.9, 2.76, and 7TeV recorded with the ALICE detector. The yields are studied as a function of the charged particle multiplicity. Taken together with the single particle yields the pair yields provide information about parton fragmentation at low trans
Natural Pseudoguaianolides Prepared from Damsin
Damsin (1) is a pseudoguaianolide sesquiterpene possessing potent biological activities, reported as a metabolite of several medicinal plants belonging to the genus Ambrosia together with related compounds. Starting from 1, which can be isolated in good amounts from Ambrosia arborescens, the five natural pseudoguaianolides ambrosin (2), isodamsin (3), 3 alpha-hydroxydamsin (4), 3 alpha-acetoxydams
Lactate formation in Caldicellulosiruptor saccharolyticus is regulated by the energy carriers pyrophosphate and ATP
Caldicellulosiruptor saccharolyticus displays superior H(2) yields on a wide range of carbon sources provided that lactate formation is avoided. Nevertheless, a low lactate flux is initiated as the growth rate declined in the transition to the stationary phase, which coincides with a drastic decrease in the glucose consumption and acetate production fluxes. In addition, the decrease in growth rate
Low-temperature cathodoluminescence studies of GaAs nanowires in the SEM
We present data from cathodoluminescence (CL) studies of nanowires (NWs) grown from size-selected gold particles using metal-organic chemical vapour deposition. The NWs in this study all have a GaAs core and are surrounded by a shell of either AlGaAs or GaInP. The spatially and spectrally resolved CL studies were performed in a scanning electron microscope, in a temperature range of 4–300 K. The N

The Utility of Digital Linear Tomosynthesis Imaging of Total Hip Joint Arthroplasty with Suspicion of Loosening: A Prospective Study in 40 Patients
Aim. The clinical utility of digital linear tomosynthesis in musculoskeletal applications has been validated in only a few reports. Technical performance and utility in hip prosthesis imaging have been discussed in technical reports, but no clinical evaluation has been reported. The purpose of the current study was to assess the added clinical utility of digital linear tomosynthesis compared to ra
A risk score for predicting mortality in patients with asymptomatic mild to moderate aortic stenosis
Background Prognostic information for asymptomatic patients with aortic stenosis (AS) from prospective studies is scarce and there is no risk score available to assess mortality. Objectives To develop an easily calculable score, from which clinicians could stratify patients into high and lower risk of mortality, using data from the Simvastatin and Ezetimibe in Aortic Stenosis (SEAS) study. Method
Measurement of Dijet Azimuthal Decorrelations in pp Collisions at root s=7 TeV
Azimuthal decorrelations between the two central jets with the largest transverse momenta are sensitive to the dynamics of events with multiple jets. We present a measurement of the normalized differential cross section based on the full data set ( integral Ldt = 36 pb(-1)) acquired by the ATLAS detector during the 2010 root s = 7 TeV proton-proton run of the LHC. The measured distributions includ

Coherent rho(0) photoproduction in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 TeV
We report the first measurement at the LHC of coherent photoproduction of rho(0) mesons in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions. The invariant mass and transverse momentum distributions for rho(0) production are studied in the pi(+)pi(-) decay channel at mid-rapidity. The production cross section in the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.5 is found to be d sigma/dy = 425 +/- 10 (stat.) (+
The Danish fabricated metal industry: A competitive medium-low-tech industry in a highwage country.
This paper aims to contribute to the knowledge on innovation processes in low- and medium-low-tech industries. Today, industries characterised as high-tech are perceived to be central to economic development, as the research intensity shields them from competition from low-wage countries. This is less the case for low-tech industries, but their economic importance continues to be large, however. I
D Meson Elliptic Flow in Noncentral Pb-Pb Collisions at root(S)(NN)=2.76 TeV
Azimuthally anisotropic distributions of D-0, D+, and D*+ mesons were studied in the central rapidity region (vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.8) in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy root(S)(NN) = 2.76 TeV per nucleon-nucleon collision, with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The second Fourier coefficient upsilon(2) (commonly denoted elliptic flow) was measured in the centrality class 30%-50
Cytokines and growth factors modify the upregulation of contractile endothelin ET(A) and ET(B) receptors in rat cerebral arteries after organ culture.
Aim: Experimental cerebral ischemia and organ culture of cerebral arteries induce an increased endothelin ET(B) receptor-mediated contraction. The aim of the present study was to examine if cytokines and growth factors, known to be activated in ischemia, can influence the expression and function of endothelin receptors after organ culture. Methods: Rat middle cerebral arteries were cultured for 24
