Stories without significance in the discourse of breast reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is an everyday, apparently non-violent, even benevolent, remaking of the normal and the reasons for why reconstruction is motivated and legitimate are uncontroversial and widely accepted. In this article I will, through Donna Haraway’s way of conceptualizing discourses, analyze what I call “stories without significance”. I have mapped the stories and interpretations women und

Balanced Model Reduction of Linear Time-Varying Systems

This paper treats model reduction of linear time-varying models in continuous time. The method proposed is based on time-varying Lyapunov inequalities and balancing of Gramians. An error bound for truncated models that generalizes the well-known 'twice-the-sum-of-the-tail'-formula for time-invariant balanced systems is obtained. Input-output stability of truncated balanced models is also proved.

On Woven Convolutional Codes

Concatenation of several conventional convolutional encoders is a both powerful and practical method to obtain encoding schemes that are attractive for use in communication systems where very low error probabilities are needed. This thesis is devoted to woven convolutional codes, a construction where the constituent codes are woven together in a manner that resembles the structure of a fabric. A

The patient with unilateral trans-tibial amputation for vascular disease : functional assessments, prognostic factors and cost of prostheses

Functional assessments, prognostic factors and cost of prostheses. The aims of the study were to focus on the functional ability of the dysvascular patient with unilateral trans-tibial amputation and the early rehabilitation period, defined here as the period between the amputation and the prosthetic fitting. Results revea

Gestures and second language acquisition

Gestures, the symbolic movements speakers perform while they speak, are systematically related to speech and language at multiple levels, and reflect cognitive and linguistic activities in non-trivial ways. This chapter presents an overview of what gestures can tell us about the processes of second language acquisition. It focuses on two key aspects, (a) gestures and the developing language system

Just gardens? : On parks as spaces of law and morality

In this paper I discussed the garden of justice as a physical and social space in which law and morality become manifest. My point of departure was a number of sites like the park Ørstedsparken in Copenhagen, which are, or have been, spaces where homosexual men meet up to have sex. The use of these outdoor spaces as cruising areas connects to the idea of the garden as a space which affords the op

Using Jitterbug to Derive Control Loop Timing Requirements

Linking scheduling attributes to control performance specifications is a difficult problem. This paper discusses how the MATLAB toolbox Jitterbug can be used to derive timing requirements for control loops from various control performance specifications. The resulting timing requirements include specifications on sampling periods, latencies, and jitter. An overview of the Jitterbug approach is giv
