Measuring Efficiency in the Swedish Health Care Sector – Levels, Trade-offs and Determinants

This thesis measures cost efficiency in the production of health care and social services in Sweden. The object of analysis is not provider efficiency, but instead the relative efficiency of political organizations or different contractual arrangements. The thesis focuses on: 1) the measurement of cost efficiency, 2) the investigation of potential trade-offs between quantity of health care service

Domain-wall induced magneto-resistive memory in ferromagnetic (Ga, Mn) As nanostructures

Novel magneto-resistive memory effect is demonstrated, which appears in lithographically patterned Y-shaped, three-terminal nanostructures, consisting of three nanowires joined in one point, formed in the epitaxial layer of a ferromagnetic (Ga, Mn) As semiconductor. The effect, in which the zero-field resistance of a pair of nanowires depends on the direction of the previously applied magnetic fie

Ultra low power transceivers for wireless sensors and body area networks

A transceiver suitable for devices in wireless body area networks is presented. Stringent requirements are imposed by the high link loss between opposite sides of the body, about 85 dB in the 2.45 GHz ISM band. Despite this, minimum physical size and power consumption are required, and we target a transceiver with 1 mm2 chip area, 1 mW active power consumption, and data rate 250 kbit/s. The receiv

On the synergy effect in MoO3-Fe2(MoO4)3 catalysts for methanol oxidation to formaldehyde

Methanol oxidation to formaldehyde was studied over a series of Fe-Mo-O catalysts with various Mo/Fe atomic ratio and the end compositions Fe2O3 and MoO3. The activity data shows that the specific activity passes through a maximum with increase of the Mo content and is the highest for Fe2(MoO4)3. The selectivity to formaldehyde, on the other hand, increases with the Mo content in the catalyst. A s

Effect of leisure time physical activity on severe knee or hip osteoarthritis leading to total joint replacement: a population-based prospective cohort study

Background: Studies on leisure time physical activity as risk factor or protective factor for knee or hip osteoarthritis (OA) show divergent results. Longitudinal prospective studies are needed to clarify the association of physical activity with future OA. The aim was to explore in a prospective population-based cohort study the influence of leisure time physical activity on severe knee or hip OA

Violence, Sex or Work? Claims-making against the Swedish ban on the purchase of sexual services on the Internet

Internationally there is an on-going political struggle regarding whether to define prostitution as violence, sex or work. In Sweden, however, the national law that bans purchase of sexual services, by defining prostitution as violence against women, has strong support. The aim of this article is to identify and describe claims-making and mobilisation on the Internet against Swedish prostitution p

The Colonization Strategies of Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae - Bacterial Colonization Factors and Vaccine Development

The aim of this thesis has been to characterize currently known, and identify novel, bacterial factors involved in the key processes of colonization and pathogenesis, namely adherence to host tissue and evasion of the host innate immunity. We have shown that the NTHi virulence factor Pr

Seasonal Variation in Human Salivary Cortisol Concentration

Measurement of cortisol concentration can contribute important information about an individual's ability to adjust to various environmental demands of both physical and psychosocial origin. However, one uncertainty that affects the possibilities of correctly interpreting and designing field studies is the lack of observations of the impact of seasonal changes on cortisol excretion. For this reason

Vibrations in lightweight structures - Efficiency and reduction of numerical models

Multi-storey wood buildings have been increasing in popularity since a century-old ban on the construction of such buildings was lifted in 1994. Compared to conventional concrete structures, it is more difficult to build lightweight structures in such a way that noise and disturbing vibrations is avoided. To design buildings of high performance regarding sound and vibrations, it is desirable to ha

Pious Polygenism and Original Sin

In this very short paper, I argue that it is possible to harmonize the doctrine of original sin, as western Christendom has traditionally understood it, with a polygenist account of human ancestry. To this end, particular attention is paid to the encyclical Humani Generis (1950), in which Pope Pius XII strongly cautions against polygenist ideas.

Possible chirality in the doubly-odd Tl-198 nucleus: Residual interaction at play

A candidate for chiral bands was found in Tl-198 for the first time in a mass region of oblate (or nonaxial with gamma >= 30 degrees) deformed nuclei. Two bands show very similar quasiparticle alignments, moments of inertia, and B(M1)/B(E2) ratios. They have a relative excitation energy of about 500 keV and different patterns of energy staggering. Calculations using the two-quasiparticle-plus-tria

Partially Premixed Combustion at High Load using Gasoline and Ethanol, a Comparison with Diesel

This paper is the follow up of a previous work and its target is to demonstrate that the best fuel for a Compression Ignition engine has to be with high Octane Number. An advanced injection strategy was designed in order to run Gasoline in a CI engine. At high load it consisted in injecting 54 % of the fuel very early in the pilot and the remaining around TDC; the second injection is used as ignit

Laminar burning velocities of primary reference fuels and simple alcohols

Laminar burning velocities for methanol, ethanol, and binary and quaternary mixtures of these with isooctane and n-heptane, have been determined using the heat flux method on a flat flame adiabatic burner. Measurements were done for an equivalence ratio range between 0.7 and 1.5 and for a range of temperatures between 298 K and 358 K at atmospheric pressure. The present study expands the available

Knee arthroplasty: are patients' expectations fulfilled?

Background and purpose With an aging population expecting an active life after retirement, patients' expectations of improvement after surgery are also increasing. We analyzed the relationship between preoperative expectations and postoperative satisfaction and self-reported outcomes with regard to pain and physical function after knee arthroplasty. Patients and methods 102 patients (39 men) with

Equalisation of alcohol participation among socioeconomic groups over time: an analysis based on the total differential approach and longitudinal data from Sweden

Background: Health inequality and its social determinants are well-studied, but the determinants of inequality of alcohol consumption are less well-investigated. Methods: The total differential approach of decomposition of changes in the concentration index of the probability of participation in alcohol consumption was applied to 8-year longitudinal data for Swedish women aged 28-76 in 1988/89. Re

Differently charged polypeptides and their impact on peritoneal and pleural postoperative adhesion formation

OER-Open possibilities for learning. A national initiative financed by the Internet Infrastructure Foundation .SE

Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching, learning and research materials available on the Internet. Resources are open and free, and usually under creative commons licenses (cc). Depending on the licenses resources are allowed to be used, reused, transmitted, and also sold openly and freely. Internationally, the OER movement is very strong. In Sweden, however, the trend towards open publicat
