Symmetry of anomalous dimension matrices explained

In a previous paper, one of us pointed out that the anomalous dimension matrices for all physical processes that have been calculated to date are complex symmetric, if stated in an orthonormal basis. In this paper we prove this fact and show that it is only true in a subset of all possible orthonormal bases, but that this subset is the natural one to use for physical calculations.

Multiple interactions, diffraction, and the BFKL pomeron

In high energy pp scattering the inclusive cross section for minijet production is very large. Unitarity then implies a high probability for multiple interactions, and a large diffractive cross section. As the proton has a substructure in terms of parton cascades, the diffraction is not only elastic, but has a large component of diffractive excitation. The cascades can fill the whole rapidity ran

Physics beyond instantons. Measuring the physical correlation length

In broken-symmetry phases of models with discrete global symmetry, the physical correlation length can be measured using time-slice correlators projected to non-zero momenta. A transfer matrix based argument is used to construct the finite-size scaling for this quantity. We extract the correlation length for the two-dimensional ten-state Potts model by this means, and the surface tension from the

Explorations of the mean field theory learning algorithm

The mean field theory (MFT) learning algorithm is elaborated and explored with respect to a variety of tasks. MFT is benchmarked against the back-propagation learning algorithm (BP) on two different feature recognition problems: two-dimensional mirror symmetry and multidimensional statistical pattern classification. We find that while the two algorithms are very similar with respect to generalizat

Questioning liquid droplet stability on nanowire tips : from theory to experiment

Liquid droplets sitting on nanowire (NW) tips constitute the starting point of the vapor-liquid-solid method of NW growth. Shape and volume of the droplet have been linked to a variety of growth phenomena ranging from the modification of growth direction, NW orientation, crystal phase, and even polarity. In this work we focus on numerical and theoretical analysis of the stability of liquid droplet

Performance of the EUDET-type beam telescopes

Test beam measurements at the test beam facilities of DESY have been conducted to characterise the performance of the EUDET-type beam telescopes originally developed within the EUDET project. The beam telescopes are equipped with six sensor planes using MIMOSA 26 monolithic active pixel devices. A programmable Trigger Logic Unit provides trigger logic and time stamp information on particle passage

Applications and challenges of membrane processes in wine production

The membrane market for the food and beverage industry of which the wine market has a significant share developed to the second largest market after municipal water treatment in Europe. The trend in the wine market towards larger volumes combined with an improved quality leads to a constant investment for upgrading and updating present product facilities. There are several interesting positions of

Evaluation of terrestrial pan-Arctic carbon cycling using a data-assimilation system

There is a significant knowledge gap in the current state of the terrestrial carbon (C) budget. Recent studies have highlighted a poor understanding particularly of C pool transit times and of whether productivity or biomass dominate these biases. The Arctic, accounting for approximately 50% of the global soil organic C stocks, has an important role in the global C cycle. Here, we use the CARbon D

The HEM Proteins : A novel family of tissue-specific transmembrane proteins expressed from invertebrates through mammals with an essential function in oogenesis

We report the identification of a new family of proteins, termed the HEM family, which show distinct expression patterns in blood cells and the central nervous system. Through the isolation and characterization of the corresponding brain-specificDrosophila(dhem-2) and rat orthologues (Hem-2), and through the detection of theCaenorhabditis elegansHem-2 orthologue in the database, we show that this

Cancer risks in women who had children with different partners from the Swedish Family-Cancer Database

We used the nationwide Swedish Family-Cancer Database to analyse cancer risks in women who have had children with different men. Cancer cases were retrieved from the Swedish Cancer Registry for 1961-1998. A total of 3 million women and 316 497 cancer cases were covered. For women having children with more than one partner, an increased risk was shown for upper aerodigestive tract, anal, liver, pan

Familial carcinoid tumors and subsequent cancers : a nation-wide epidemiologic study from Sweden

Carcinoids are rare neuroendocrine tumors, mainly located in the bowel, stomach and lung. Familial risks in carcinoid tumours are not well known apart from multiple endocrine neoplasia 1 (MEN1). We used the nation-wide Swedish Family-Cancer Database on 10.1 million individuals for assessment. Carcinoid tumors were retrieved from the Cancer Registry covering the years 1958-1998. The offspring gener

Second primary cancers after sporadic and familial colorectal cancer

Second cancers were studied among 68,104 cases of colorectal cancer (CRC) from the Swedish Family-Cancer Database. A total of 1,113 patients received a diagnosis of second CRC; 25 of them had a family history of CRC. Cases of second CRC with a family history were diagnosed up to 10 years before sporadic cases. The relative risk (RR) of all second CRCs was 2.21 compared with the first CRC. Familial

LPJ-GM 1.0 : Simulating migration efficiently in a dynamic vegetation model

Dynamic global vegetation models are a common tool to assess the effect of climate and land use change on vegetation. Though most applications of dynamic global vegetation models use plant functional types, some also simulate species occurrences. While the current development aims to include more processes, e.g. the nitrogen cycle, the models still typically assume an ample seed supply allowing al

A decade of catheter ablation of cardiac arrhythmias in Sweden : ablation practices and outcomes

AIMS: Catheter ablation is considered the treatment of choice for many tachyarrhythmias, but convincing 'real-world' data on efficacy and safety are lacking. Using Swedish national registry data, the ablation spectrum, procedural characteristics, as well as ablation efficacy and reported adverse events are reported. METHODS AND RESULTS: Consecutive patients (≥18 years of age) undergoing catheter a

From Substance Use Disorders in Life to Autopsy Findings : A Combined Case-Record and Medico-Legal Study

Objectives: Several studies have shown mortality and suicide risk in substance use disorders, and autopsy findings with respect to the used substances. However, there seems to be a gap in the knowledge about substances misused in life and at death at the within-person level. Methods: All consecutive, autopsied patients during 1993 to 1997, who had been in contact with the Addiction Centre in Malmö

Event-Shape Engineering for the D-meson elliptic flow in mid-central Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02 TeV

The production yield of prompt D mesons and their elliptic flow coefficient v 2 were measured with the Event-Shape Engineering (ESE) technique applied to mid-central (10–30% and 30–50% centrality classes) Pb-Pb collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN=5.02 TeV, with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The ESE technique allows the classification of events, belonging to the same centr
