Opportunities and challenges of disease biomarkers: a new section in the journal of translational medicine
Electrophysiology, Optical Coherence Tomography and Molecular Genetic Analysis in Patients with Glaucoma and/or Best Vitelliform Macular Dystrophy as Part of Clinical Care
Glaucoma is a common ophthalmic disease with multifactorial aetiology. There is growing evidence that glaucoma is a disease of the entire retina and not only the inner retina. Best vitelliform macular dystrophy (BVMD) affects the retinal pigment epithelium and is considered a model system for the more common blinding disease, age-related macular degeneration. The aim of the work presented in this
Ethanol production in biorefineries using lignocellulosic feedstock - GHG performance, energy balance and implications of life cycle calculation methodology
Co-production of high-value biobased products in biorefineries is a promising option for optimized utilization of biomass. Lignocellulosic materials such as agricultural and forest residues have been identified as attractive alternative feedstocks because of their high availability and low resource demand. This study assessed the greenhouse gas (GHG) performance and energy balance of ethanol co-pr
Proposal for quantum spin tomography in ferromagnet-normal conductors
We present a theory for a complete reconstruction of nonlocal spin correlations in ferromagnet-normal conductors. This quantum spin tomography is based on cross-correlation measurements of electric currents into ferromagnetic terminals with controllable magnetization directions. For normal injectors, nonlocal spin correlations are universal and strong. The correlations are suppressed by spin-flip
Ethnobotanical notes from Daniel Rolander's Diarium Surinamicum (1754-1756): Are these plants still used in Suriname today?
The recent English translation of the diary of the Swedish naturalist Daniel Rolander (written 1754-1756) reveals the earliest records on useful plants of Suriname. Since he did not grant Linnaeus access to his specimens, Rolander never received credit for his work, part of his collection was lost, and his diary never published. Here we compare Rolander's notes with recent ethnobotanical data from
Transverse momentum dependence of eta meson suppression in Au plus Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV
New measurements by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider for. production at midrapidity as a function of transverse momentum ((PT)) and collision centrality in root s(NN) = 200 GeV Au + Au and p + p collisions are presented. They indicate nuclear modification factors (R-AA) which are similar in both magnitude and trend to those found in earlier pi(0) measurements. Linear fi
Diagnostic accuracy of 3D color volume-rendered CT images for peroneal tendon dislocation in patients with acute calcaneal fractures
Background: Use of three-dimensional (3D) color volume-rendered (VR) images has been reported to be more time-efficient compared to that of cross-sectional computed tomography (CT) images for the diagnosis of peroneal tendon dislocation. However, the diagnostic performance of this technique has not been studied. Purpose: To test diagnostic accuracy of 3D color VR CT images of ankle for peroneal te
Learning to use gesture in narratives: developmental trends in formal and semantic gesture competence
Time-resolved investigation of nanometer scale deformations induced by a high flux x-ray beam
We present results of a time-resolved pump-probe experiment where a Si sample was exposed to an intense 15 keV beam and its surface monitored by measuring the wavefront deformation of a reflected optical laser probe beam. By reconstructing and back propagating the wavefront, the deformed surface can be retrieved for each time step. The dynamics of the heat bump, build-up and relaxation, is followe

A numerical model of beach morphological evolution due to waves and currents in the vicinity of coastal structures
A numerical model was developed of beach morphological evolution in the vicinity of coastal structures. The model includes five sub-models for random wave transformation, surface roller development, nearshore wave-induced currents, sediment transport, and morphological evolution. The model was validated using high-quality data sets obtained during experiments with a T-head groin and a detached bre
Knowledge Maturity as a Means to Support Decision Making During Product-Service Systems Development Projects in the Aerospace Sector
Streamlining new product development forces companies to make decisions on preliminary information. This article considers this challenge within the context of project management in the aerospace sector and, in particular, for the development of product-service systems. The concept of knowledge maturity is explored as a means to provide practical decision support, which increases decision makers’
Towards an instrument targeting mobility-related participation: Nordic cross-national reliability
Objective: To investigate test-retest reliability and internal consistency of a new instrument for evaluation of mobility device interventions. Material and methods: The instrument comprised 4 scales and one summed index. Two test-retest interviews involved 147 mobility device users (mean age 60 years) with a broad range of functional limitations, living at home. Results: For 2 scales and the summ
A comparison between different methods to determine moisture transport properties of cementitious materials
A number of methods for measuring moisture transport properties of cementitious materials were compared in a series of experiments. Two OPC mortars with two water-binder-ratios were wet cured for six months and used to produce specimens as discs with different thicknesses and diameters. The cup methods were easy to use, reliable and fairly rapid but need a stable, surrounding, CO2-free climate, ho
Projectification in Swedish municipalities. A case of porous organizations
This article aims to expand our understanding of projectification in Swedish municipalities. Above all the article explores to what extent processes of projectification can be identified and if so how they unfold. The article draws its inspiration from critical management studies and uses the notion of sensemaking to identify the practices of projectification processes. Three processes of projecti
Fast-framing ballistic imaging of velocity in an aerated spray
We describe further development of ballistic imaging adapted for the liquid core of an atomizing spray. To fully understand spray breakup dynamics, one must measure the velocity and acceleration vectors that describe the forces active in primary breakup. This information is inaccessible to most optical diagnostics, as the signal is occluded by strong scattering in the medium. Ballistic imaging mit
Spin resonance without spin splitting
We predict that a single-level quantum dot without discernible splitting of its spin states develops a spin-precession resonance in charge transport when embedded into a spin valve. The resonance occurs in the generic situation of Coulomb blockaded transport with ferromagnetic leads whose polarizations deviate from perfect antiparallel alignment. The resonance appears when electrically tuning the
Liquid ionization chamber calibrated gel dosimetry in conformal stereotactic radiotherapy of brain lesions
Hypofractionated conformal stereotactic radiotherapy (HCSRT) is an established method of treating brain lesions such as arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and brain metastases. The aim of this study was to investigate the reliability of treatment plans in the terms of dose distribution and absorbed dose for HCSRT. Methods and materials. Treatment plans for three different clinical intracerebral ta
Child Sexual Abuse: Community Concerns in Urban Tanzania
The aim of this study was to explore community perceptions about child sexual abuse in Tanzania. Thirteen focus group discussions were conducted with adult community members. The core category, children's rights challenged by lack of agency, was supported by eight categories. Aware but distressed portrayed feelings of hopelessness, lack of trust in the healthcare and legal systems reflected percei
