A count data model with endogenous household specific censoring : the number of nights to stay

In this paper a count data regression model accounting for endogenous censoring with household specific censoring thresholds is presented. The presented modelling approach is utilized in an analysis of household choice of total number of nights to spend on monthly recreational trips. The empirical study reveals that the suggested approach is feasible and that accounting for endogenous censoring gi

Learning to signal: analysis of a micro-level reinforcement model

We consider the following signaling game. Nature plays first from the set {1,2}{1,2}. Player 1 (the Sender) sees this and plays from the set {A,B}{A,B}. Player 2 (the Receiver) sees only Player 1’s play and plays from the set {1,2}{1,2}. Both players win if Player 2’s play equals Nature’s play and lose otherwise. Players are told whether they have won or lost, and the game is repeated. An urn sche

Sickness absence in musculoskeletal disorders - patients' experiences of interactions with the Social Insurance Agency and health care. A qualitative study

Background: Sickness absence has represented a growing public health problem in many Western countries over the last decade. In Sweden disorders of the musculoskeletal system cause approximately one third of all sick leave. The Social Insurance Agency (SIA) and the health care system are important actors in handling the sickness absence process. The objective was to study how patients with persona

Rhinovirus and dsRNA Induce RIG-I-Like Receptors and Expression of Interferon β and λ1 in Human Bronchial Smooth Muscle Cells.

Rhinovirus (RV) infections cause exacerbations and development of severe asthma highlighting the importance of antiviral interferon (IFN) defence by airway cells. Little is known about bronchial smooth muscle cell (BSMC) production of IFNs and whether BSMCs have dsRNA-sensing receptors besides TLR3. dsRNA is a rhinoviral replication intermediate and necrotic cell effect mimic that mediates innate

Partisanship, Ministers, and Biotechnology Policy

Research in public policy and political economy has provided many insights in the evolution of public resistance against genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the last two decades. But how does the partisan composition of a government, its programmatic orientation and the allocation of cabinet offices affect policy making in this specific area? We argue that the regulation of GMOs is determined

Measurement of the gamma(1S) production cross-section in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV in ATLAS ATLAS Collaboration

A measurement of the cross-section for ϒ ( 1 S ) → μ + μ − production in proton–proton collisions at centre of mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The cross-section is measured as a function of the ϒ ( 1 S ) transverse momentum in two bins of rapidity, | y ϒ ( 1 S ) | < 1.2 and 1.2 < | y ϒ ( 1 S ) | < 2.4 . The measurement requires that both muons have transverse momentum p T μ > 4 GeV and pseudora

Effect of experimental complex III deficiency on respiratory chain assembly and function

Popular Abstract in Swedish Kroppens förmåga att omvandla matens energi till energi som kan användas i organen sker i små organeller som finns i alla kroppens celler, mitokondrierna. Avvikelser i mitokondrierna förorsakar därför ofta svåra sjukdomar. GRACILE syndrom är en medfödd mitokondriell sjukdom, som leder till svår tillväxthämning, problem med ämnesomsättningen och tidig död. Det finns ingeThe assembly of respiratory chain complexes in the mitochondrial inner membrane requires specific factors. Once assembled to form a mature functional complex, complex III (CIII) is a dimer consisting of two monomers, each with eleven subunits. To date, seven assembly factors for CIII are known, of which BCS1L incorporates the Rieske iron-sulfur protein (RISP) in the last stage of the assembly. The

Lande-like formula for the g factors of hole-nanowire subband edges

We have analyzed theoretically the Zeeman splitting of hole-quantum-wire subband edges. As is typical for any bound state, their g factor depends on both an intrinsic g factor of the material and an additional contribution arising from a finite bound-state orbital angular momentum. We discuss the quantum-confinement-induced interplay between bulk-material and orbital effects, which is nontrivial d

Canceling stationary interference signals exploiting secondary data

In this paper, we propose a novel interference cancellation method that exploits secondary data to estimate stationary interference components present in both the primary and the secondary data sets, thereby allowing for the removal of such interference from the data sets, even when these components share frequencies with the signal of interest. The algorithm estimates the present interference com

Going through magnetic resonance imaging - patients’ experiences and the value of information and preparation for adults and children

Undersökningen innebär att patienten ligger i en smal tunnel i magnetkameran och när bilderna tas hörs kraMagnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is becoming an increasingly common form of exami¬nation for both adults and children. Although it is non-invasive and considered painless, both adults and children experience anxiety during the examination. The technique is sensitive to motion and for that reason many children are anaesthetised. The aim of this thesis was to improve patient care through exploring a

Sensitivity of catalysis to surface structure: The example of CO oxidation on Rh under realistic conditions

Using a combination of surface x-ray diffraction and mass spectrometry at realistic pressures, the CO oxidation reactivity of Rh(111) and Rh(100) model catalysts has been studied in conjunction with the surface structure. The measurements show that the presence of a specific thin surface oxide is crucial for the high activity of the Rh based CO oxidation. As this oxide is readily formed on all Rh

A new European species in the genus Melangyna Verrall, 1901 (Diptera: Syrphidae).

Melangyna pavlovskyi (Violovitsh, 1956) has been found breeding in Denmark. The species is recorded from four localities on Zealand, and it is established on at least one of these. It is new to the European fauna. A redescription of M. pavlovskyi based on the external characters and an updated key to the NW European species of Melangyna are presented.

A polymorphism in metallothionein 1A (MT1A) is associated with cadmium-related excretion of urinary beta 2-microglobulin

Objectives: Cadmium (Cd) toxicity of the kidney varies between individuals despite similar exposure levels. In humans Cd is mainly bound to metallothioneins (MT), which scavenge its toxic effects. Here we analyzed whether polymorphisms in MT genes MTIA and MT2A influence Cd-related kidney damage. Methods: In a cross-sectional study N = 512 volunteers were selected from three areas in South-Eastern

Design of innovation policy through diagnostic analysis: identification of systemic problems (or failures)

"Activities" in innovation systems are the determinants of the development and diffusion of innovations. Examples are R&D, provision of organizations and institutions, financing of innovations, incubation, etc. These activities are partly performed by private organizations and partly by public organizations, the latter performing tasks that constitute innovation policy. As a basis for innovati

Adsorption of Trimethyl Phosphate on Maghemite, Hematite, and Goethite Nanoparticles

Adsorption of trimethyl phosphate (TMP) on well-characterized hematite, maghemite and goethite nanopartides was studied by in situ DRIFT spectroscopy as a model system for adsorption of organophosphorous (OP) compounds on iron minerals. The iron minerals were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)
