Processing and characterization of nanowire arrays for photodetectors

We present a fabrication scheme of contacting arrays of vertically standing nanowires (NW) for LEDs (Duan et al. Nature 409:66–69, 2001), photodetectors (Wang et al. Science (NY) 293:1455–1457, 2001) or solar cell applications (Wallentin et al. Science (NY) 339:1057–1060, 2013). Samples were prepared by depositing Au films using nano-imprint lithography (Ma rtensson et al. Nano Lett 4:699–702, 200

High-flux ptychographic imaging using the new 55 μm-pixel detector 'Lambda' based on the Medipix3 readout chip

Suitable detection systems that are capable of recording high photon count rates with single-photon detection are instrumental for coherent X-ray imaging. The new single-photon-counting pixel detector 'Lambda' has been tested in a ptychographic imaging experiment on solar-cell nanowires using Kirkpatrick-Baez-focused 13.8 keV X-rays. Taking advantage of the high count rate of the Lambda and dynami

Dicarboxylic acids from xylose, using natural and engineered hosts

Chemical building blocks for plastics can be produced from renewable biomass feedstocks using microbial production organisms, such as yeast or bacteria, in a biorefinery. One class of chemical building blocks that are suitable for production of biobased and biodegradable plastics are dicarboxylic acids, e.g. succinic acid. In order to avoid competition with food and feed production it is desirable

Experimental and numerical investigation on fire behaviour of foam/fabric composites

Upholstered furniture is a major contributor to the fuel load in a fire compartment. Modelling the fire behaviour of upholstered furniture would support performance based fire safety engineering, by allowing the specification of realistic fire scenarios. Modelling upholstered furniture composites in cone calorimeter test conditions is undertaken to validate fundamental assumptions about the fire b

Removal of pharmaceuticals with ozone at 10 Swedish wastewater treatment plants

Pilot-scale tests were run with ozonation for reduction of 24 pharmaceuticals at 10 full-scale wastewater treatment plants in southern Sweden. Reduction was evaluated based on doses of 3, 5 and 7 g O3/m3 at all plants. The reduction of pharmaceuticals reached on average 65% at 3 g O3/m3, 78% at 5 g O3/m3 and 88% for 7 g O3/m3 in terms of total concentration of pharmaceuticals. Characteristics of BVOC emissions from a Swedish boreal forest : Using chambers to capture biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) from trees and forest floor

Plant-emitted biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) are a large group of hydrocarbons released by plant leaves, bark, flowers and fruits into the atmosphere and from plant roots into the soil. BVOCs have important physiological and ecological functions, such as mediating within-plant and plant-plant communication, defense against herbivores attack, protection against heat or other oxidative

Day2day : Investigating daily variability of magnetic resonance imaging measures over half a year

Background: Most studies of brain structure and function, and their relationships to cognitive ability, have relied on inter-individual variability in magnetic resonance (MR) images. Intra-individual variability is often ignored or implicitly assumed to be equivalent to the former. Testing this assumption empirically by collecting enough data on single individuals is cumbersome and costly. We coll

Studies on translation initiation and gene expression in Escherichia coli

In prokaryotes, several mRNA sequences surrounding the initiation codon have been found to influence the translation process; these include the downstream region and its codon context, the Shine-Dalgarno sequence and the S1 ribosomal protein-binding site. In this thesis, the purpose has been to study the role of the downstream region and Shine-Dalgarno-like sequences on early translation elongatio

Two types of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in Drosophila and other arthropods

Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) play a central role in the mammalian nervous system. These receptors are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), which are activated by the agonists acetylcholine and muscarine, and blocked by a variety of antagonists. Mammals have five mAChRs (m1-m5). In this study, we cloned two structurally related GPCRs from the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, which,

Using Qualitative Content Analysis to Study Consumer Reports on Adverse Drug Reactions

Using qualitative content analysis on adverse drug reactions reports filed to an open Internet-based reporting system in Sweden, this study explored patients’ and consumers’ experiences of antidepressant treatment and the medical encounter. By scrutinizing free text comments in 181 individual consumer reports of adverse drug reactions, we could obtain important information about how people, as indUsing qualitative content analysis on adverse drug reactions reports filed to an open Internet-based reporting system in Sweden, this study explored patients’ and consumers’ experiences of antidepressant treatment and the medical encounter. Structures of turbulent premixed flames in the high Karlovitz number regime – DNS analysis

Lean premixed turbulent methane-air flames have been investigated using direct numerical simulations (DNS) for different Karlovitz numbers (Ka), ranging from 65 to 3350. The flames are imposed to a high intensity small-scale turbulent environment, corresponding to high Ka conditions, and the effect on the flame structure is investigated during the transition from initial laminar flame to highly di

Mind the gap : The role of mindfulness in adapting to increasing risk and climate change

It is becoming clear that increasingly complex global challenges cannot simply be solved by new technology or governments alone. We also need to develop new social practices and encourage a broader cultural shift towards sustainability. Against this background, this paper explores the role of mindfulness in adapting to increasing risk and climate change. Based on a literature review, it assesses c
