Reinterventions after open and endovascular AAA repair.

Reinterventions seem to occur more frequently after endovascular aneurysm repair than after open surgical repair and are encountered in about 20% versus 10% of the cases, respectively. However, reinterventions following endovascular repair are predominantly endoluminal and early reinterventions are more frequent after open repair. The indications for reintervention after EVAR have changed over tim

DNA pre-condensation with an amino acid-based cationic amphiphile. A viable approach for liposome-based gene delivery

A study related to the development and characterization of a new gene delivery system was performed. The approach consists in both the pre-condensation of plasmid DNA with an arginine-based cationic surfactant, arginine-N-lauroyl amide dihydrochloride (ALA), which was found not to be toxic, and the incorporation of the blood protein transferrin (Tf) into the formulations. Two cationic liposome form

Study of the response of the ATLAS central calorimeter to pions of energies from 3 to 9 GeV

A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS central detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. in this paper, the response of the central calorimeters to pions with energies in the range between 3 and 9 GeV is presented. The linearity and the resolution of the combined calorimetry (electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters) was measured and compared to

The One Stop Shop to Open Access Journals - DOAJ

The initiative to start the project Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) was taken in 2002 at the first Nordic Conference on Scholarly Communication (NCSC). The idea was to develop a one stop shop service which made it easier for libraries and aggregators to integrate OA-journals data in their services, for OA-publishers to get their journals visible and for readers to find OA-material. Initia

Destabilizing domains mediate reversible transgene expression in the brain.

Regulating transgene expression in vivo by delivering oral drugs has been a long-time goal for the gene therapy field. A novel gene regulating system based on targeted proteasomal degradation has been recently developed. The system is based on a destabilizing domain (DD) of the Escherichia coli dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) that directs fused proteins to proteasomal destruction. Creating YFP prot

Search for displaced muonic lepton jets from light Higgs boson decay in proton-proton collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is performed for collimated muon pairs displaced from the primary vertex produced in the decay of long-lived neutral particles in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy, with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. In a 1.9 fb(-1) event sample collected during 2011, the observed data are consistent with the Standard Model background expectations. Limits on the product of

Calcium mediated interaction of calf-thymus DNA with monolayers of distearoylphosphtidylcholine: a neutron and Xray reflectivity study

X-ray and neutron reflection studies, the latter in conjunction with contrast variation, have been combined to study the interaction of calf thymus DNA (ctDNA) with monolayers of distearoylphosphatidylcholine (DSPC) in the presence of 20 mM Ca2+ ions, at the air–liquid interface as a function of surface pressure (10, 20, 30 and 40 mN m−1). Analysis of the X-ray and neutron reflection data showed t

Different arbuscular mycorrhizae and competition with an exotic grass affect the growth of Podocarpus cunninghamii Colenso cuttings

There is growing interest in the use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) for ecological restoration. Numerous commercial AMF products are now available and are often used in preference to collecting indigenous AMF in treating restoration plants. Commercial AMF products are typically based on AMF strains exotic to the plant species and locations where they are used. We treated rooted cuttings of

Parental Authority and Freedom of Choice: The Debate on Clandestinity and Parental Consent at the Council of Trent

After a long debate the Council of Trent decided, in 1563, against the validity of marriages contracted informally, without a public ceremony. Marriages without parental consent, however, remained valid. These decisions are frequently described as a pragmatic compromise, where one controversial reform was rejected in favor of another, equally controversial. Yet there was, as this article will show

Long-term fiscal implications of subsidizing in-vitro fertilization in Sweden: A lifetime tax perspective

Aims: In Sweden approximately 3% of annual births are conceived using assisted reproductive technologies ( ART). In light of increasing use of ART in Sweden we estimate the lifetime future tax revenues of a child conceived by in-vitro fertilization ( IVF) to establish whether public subsidy of IVF represents sound fiscal policy. Methods: A modified generational accounting model was developed to ca

Coffee consumption and the risk of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults-results from a Swedish case-control study

Aims Coffee consumption is associated with a reduced risk of Type2 diabetes. Our aim was to investigate if coffee intake may also reduce the risk of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults, an autoimmune form of diabetes with features of Type2 diabetes. Methods We used data from a population-based case-control study with incident cases of adult onset (35years) diabetes, including 245 cases of latent

The impacts of climate change and urbanisation on drainage in Helsingborg, Sweden: suburban stormwater

Assessment of the potential impact of climate change on water systems has been an essential part of hydrological research over the last couple of decades. However, the notion that such assessments should also include other changes is relatively recent. In this study, the potential impacts of climate change and continued urbanisation on stormwater flows to a suburban stream, Helsingborg, south Swed

Motion in Language and Experience : Actual and Non-actual motion in Swedish, French and Thai

This thesis deals with motion in language and non-linguistic experience, distinguishing between actual motion (AM) and non-actual motion (NAM). AM is the experience of continuous change in an object’s position, expressed in sentences such as 'The man runs through the forest' and 'The woman is walking'. NAM refers to dynamic qualities involved in conceiving or perceiving static situations and is ex

Dynamics of isolated-photon plus jet production in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The dynamics of isolated-photon plus jet production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV has been studied with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using an integrated luminosity of 37 pb(-1). Measurements of isolated-photon plus jet bin-averaged cross sections are presented as functions of photon transverse energy, jet transverse momentum and jet rapidity. In addition, the bin-averaged c

Kinematics and chemistry of recently discovered Reticulum 2 and Horologium 1 dwarf galaxies

We report on VLT/GIRAFFE spectra of stars in two recently discovered ultra-faint satellites, Reticulum 2 and Horologium 1, obtained as part of the Gaia-ESO Survey. We identify 18 members in Reticulum 2 and five in Horologium 1. We find Reticulum 2 to have a velocity dispersion of 3.22(-0.49)(+1.64) km s(-1) , implying a mass-to-light ratio (M/L) of similar to 500. The mean metallicity of Reticulum

Sparse wave-packet representations and seismic imaging

In this paper we introduce a new algorithm for seismic imaging based on the flow out of Gaussian wave packets. We follow the standard strategy of decomposing data into wave packets and flowing them out along rays to approximate the downward wavefield extrapolation, and finally applying an imaging condition. We revisit each computational step to gain efficiency. Furthermore, we develop procedure fo
