Attitudes of administrative decision‑makers towards nature‑based solutions for flood risk management in Germany

Over the last two decades, alternative and holistic concepts, such as Nature-based Solutions (NbS) were introduced and adopted by policy-makers, including to the field of flood protection, thereby causing a paradigm shift towards flood risk management. The inclusion of natural water retention measures (NWRM) such as dike relocation and floodplain restoration into the German guidelines for flood pr

Targeted acetylation of wood : a tool for tuning wood-water interactions

Abstract: Wood is an increasingly important material in the sustainable transition of societies worldwide. The performance of wood in structures is intimately tied to the presence of moisture in the material, which directly affects important characteristics such as dimensions and mechanical properties, and indirectly its susceptibility to fungal decomposition. By chemical modification, the durabil

Are migrants in/from emerging economies more entrepreneurial than natives?

The academic debate in migrant entrepreneurship has mainly focused on movements from emerging economies into developed economies. Anecdotal evidence has suggested that the highest impact is generated by migrants in/from emerging economies. To extend this academic discussion in the Latin-American context, this study investigates why migrants are more entrepreneurial than natives. By adopting the hu

Rewetting Intensity Influences Soil Respiration and Nitrogen Availability

It is not clear how different rewetting intensities (rapid, slow or partial rewetting) influence soil respiration and nitrogen (N) availability. Moist soil left unamended or amended with low C/N faba bean residue and incubated for 21 days was dried to rapid > partial rewetting. From day 4 onwards, moisture treatments differed little in respiration rate. In unamended soils, the rewetting intensity

General Trends in Core-shell Preferences for Bimetallic Nanoparticles

Core-shell nanoparticles have gathered much attention of the scientific community owing to their potential applications in various fields including biomedical imaging and catalysis. Predicting core-shell preference1-3 is, however, still largely based on a few experimental observations and limited theorical studies, and hence development of new core-shell nanoparticles is normally built on a trial-

Sticky Wages and the Great Depression: Evidence from the United Kingdom

How sticky were wages during the Great Depression? Although classic accounts emphasize the importance of nominal rigidity in amplifying deflationary shocks, the evidence is limited. In this paper, I calculate the degree of nominal wage rigidity in the United Kingdom between the wars using new granular data covering millions of wages.I find that nominal wages were more flexible downwards than in mo

T cell receptor (TCR) signaling in health and disease

Interaction of the T cell receptor (TCR) with an MHC-antigenic peptide complex results in changes at the molecular and cellular levels in T cells. The outside environmental cues are translated into various signal transduction pathways within the cell, which mediate the activation of various genes with the help of specific transcription factors. These signaling networks propagate with the help of v

The Long-Term Impact of Levodopa/Carbidopa Intestinal Gel on ‘Off’-time in Patients with Advanced Parkinson’s Disease : A Systematic Review

Introduction: Levodopa/carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG; carbidopa/levodopa enteral suspension) has been widely used and studied for the treatment of motor fluctuations in levodopa-responsive patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease (PD) when other treatments have not given satisfactory results. Reduction in ‘off’-time is a common primary endpoint in studies of LCIG, and it is important to assess

Network Synchronization and Control Based on Inverse Optimality : A Study of Inverter-Based Power Generation

This thesis dwells upon the synthesis of system-theoretical tools to understand and control the behavior of nonlinear networked systems. This work is at the crossroads of three topics: synchronization in coupled high-order oscillators, inverse optimal control and the application of inverter-based power systems. The control and stability of power systems leverages the theoretical results obtained f

A finite deformation isogeometric finite element approach to fibre-reinforced composites with fibre bending stiffness

It is a common technique in many fields of engineering to reinforce materials with certain types of fibres in order to enhance the mechanical properties of the overall material. Specific simulation methods help to predict the behaviour of these composites in advance. In this regard, a widely established approach is the incorporation of the fibre direction vector as an additional argument of the en
