Explicit, time reversible, adaptive step size control

Adaptive step size control is difficult to combine with geometric numerical integration. As classical step size control is based on "past" information only, time symmetry is destroyed and with it the qualitative properties of the method. In this paper we develop completely explicit, reversible, symmetry-preserving, adaptive step size selection algorithms for geometric numerical integrators such as

Giving the crucial information: performance on a referential communication task in Swedish children with language impairment

The study focused on the performance of a group of Swedish children with language impairment (LI) on a referential communication task as a step in the investigation of their pragmatic skills. The task entailed choosing a single card from a selection of 16 depicting a face and describing it well enough for the opponent in order for him/her to pick the correct one from his/her identical array of car

Gravitational scattering in the ADD model revisited

It is argued that the assumption that the standard model particles live on a finite brane in the ADD model does in itself imply a finite propagator for virtual Kaluza-Klein mode exchange. The part of the propagator relevant for large distance scattering is cut-off-independent for scattering at distances large compared to the brane width. The matrix element corresponding to this part can also, at l

Biological detoxification of tar-water

Gasification is an important option for the swift implementation of biomass combined heat and power. processes in the Danish energy supply system. Tar-water produced by the gas-cleaning system of gasifiers may contain substances toxic to nitrifying bacteria. As the gasification plants are small and often located in the catchment area of small wastewater treatment plants, discharge of the tar-water

Changes in demographic factors and mortality after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Sweden

Objective To describe changes between 1992 and 2003 in age, sex, factors at resuscitation and survival among patients suffering from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Sweden. Methods This was a prospective observational study including various ambulance organizations in Sweden. Patients suffering from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest between 1992 and 2003 included in the Swedish Cardiac Arrest Regis

Treatment of displaced femoral neck fractures - A randomized minimum 5-year follow-up study of screws and bipolar hemiprostheses in 100 patients

In a randomized study of 100 patients having displaced femoral neck fractures (Garden types 34), we compared internal fixation using 2 von Bahr screws (n = 53) with a bipolar Variokopf prosthesis (n = 47). The duration of surgery was shorter and the blood loss was less in the group with screws. Dislocation of the prosthesis occurred in 7/47 patients, all within 4 months. After a minimum follow-up

Spin and orbital moments in Au/Co/Au(111)/W(110) across the spin-reorientation transition-temperature

The temperature-driven spin-reorientation transition (SRT) has been investigated in a layer of 2.1 nm Co in Au/Co/Au. We studied the evolution and stability of the in-plane magnetization components in the temperature range from 300 to 90 K by means of polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) and Co L-edge X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements. The PNR measurement provides evidence for

Critical tests of stellar evolution in open clusters - III. Stellar population and dynamical evolution of IC 4651

We present multiple-epoch radial-velocity observations for 104 stars in a field of the intermediate-age open cluster IC 4651 to . Only 13 stars (13%) of the full sample are field stars. From the 44 single member stars we find a mean radial velocity of , and the 12 single red-giant members yield a true radial-velocity dispersion of . Of the 19 giant members, 7 (37%) are spectroscopic binaries with

Uninterpretable features and EPP: a minimal account of language build up and break down

Like most L2 speakers, speakers of early L1, children with SLI, and Broca’s aphasics lack the or¬dinary speaker’s ability to produce utterances on line with almost no errors. Often they produce well-formed utterances, but quite frequently they produce errors that are almost non-existent in the speech of normal grown-up speakers. In my paper I will suggest, based on empirical material from Swedish,

Cerebrospinal fluid protein reactions during non-neurological surgery

Objective- To study changes in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein markers of blood-CSF barrier integrity and immunological reactions during surgical stress. Methods- Thirty-five patients without neurological or psychiatric disorders undergoing knee replacements had CSF and serum samples drawn from spinal and arterial catheters before, 3 h after and the morning after surgery. Results- Serum albumin

Evaluation of circulating immune complex-like material for development of skin reactions in connection with penicillin therapy

The levels of immune complex-like material in serum from 18 patients in connection with skin eruptions appearing during penicillin therapy were determined with a modified ELISA. Immune complex-like material could only be shown in the serum of 3 out of the 17 patients. However, according to ELISA results, the complexes appeared without the simultaneous presence of penicilloyl-specific antibodies. N

Collective excitation dynamics and polaron formation in molecular aggregates

Real-space collective excitation dynamics in molecular aggregates is studied using a model where the electronic system is described via exciton theory with surface hopping. The nuclear dynamics are included using the Langevin equation where temperature and zero-point motions are entered via the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Dynamic processes like exciton relaxation, localization, polaron format

Sperm count and chromatin structure in men exposed to inorganic lead: lowest adverse effect levels

OBJECTIVES: To obtain knowledge on male reproductive toxicity of inorganic lead at current European exposure levels and to establish lowest adverse effect levels, if any. METHODS: A cross sectional survey of the semen of 503 men employed by 10 companies was conducted in the United Kingdom, Italy, and Belgium. The mean blood lead concentration was 31.0 microg/dl (range 4.6-64.5) in 362 workers expo

Nicotinamide as a repair inhibitor in vivo: studies using single and fractionated X-ray doses in mouse skin and kidneys

Inhibitors of adenosine diphosphoribosyl transferase, like nicotinamide, 3-aminobenzamide and other analogues, can inhibit repair of radiation-induced sublethal and/or potentially lethal damage in some in vitro systems. Therefore, we have tested the effect of nicotinamide on repair parameters in vivo in two rodent normal tissues. In skin, the sensitivity to dose fractionation (1, 2, 5 or 10 X-ray

Stepwise Disintegration of the Photosynthetic Oxygen-Evolving Complex

Photosynthetic water oxidation catalyzed by Photosystem II takes place at a site that comprises a redox-active tyrosine, YZ, a tetramanganese cluster, and, in addition to its redox components, two inorganic cofactors, calcium and chloride. Recent work suggests that YZ and the metal site are intimately linked in the oxidation and deprotonation reactions of substrate water. The metal cluster stores

L'Etat, c'est pas moi : Reframing citizenship(s) in the Baltic republics

Teoretiskt vilar analysen på en kritisk granskning av de tre This book speaks to readers with a particular interest in the Baltic states as well as to those with a broader interest in post-communist democratization and citizenship. The notion of citizenship has not been prominent in academic perspectives on post-communism. This study aims at bringing citizenship back into these perspectives. Starting from the idea that citizenship is both a condition of de
