Teaching Embedded Control Systems

This paper introduces a novel approach to building virtual laboratories of embedded control systems using TrueTime and Easy Java Simulations. TrueTime is a freeware MATLAB/Simulink based tool commonly used to simulate embedded control systems. Easy Java Simulations is a popular authoring tool that facilitates the creation of pedagogical simulations. According to the proposed approach, authors use

Potentials for prosperity without growth: Ecological sustainability, social inclusion and the quality of life in 38 countries

Recent contributions to ecological economics and related social sciences indicate that issues such as climate change, resource depletion and environmental degradation cannot be effectively addressed under conditions of continued economic growth. This paper aims at empirically identifying structural potentials and policy challenges for prosperity at scaleswhere economic development remainswithin ec

Intensive multifactorial treatment modifies the effect of family history of diabetes on glycaemic control in people with Type 2 diabetes: a post hoc analysis of the ADDITION-Denmark randomized controlled trial

AimTo investigate whether intensive multifactorial treatment can reverse the predisposed adverse phenotype of people with Type 2 diabetes who have a family history of diabetes. MethodsData from the randomized controlled trial ADDITION-Denmark were used. A total of 1441 newly diagnosed patients with diabetes (598 with family history of diabetes) were randomized to intensive treatment or routine car

Modelling the Distributional Implications of Agricultural Policies in Developing Countries: The Development Policy Evaluation Model (DEVPEM)

This paper presents the Development Policy Evaluation Model (DEVPEM), a new simulation model which captures four critical aspects of rural economies in developing countries: (1) the role of the household as both a producer and a consumer of food crops; (2) high transaction costs of participating in markets; (3) market linkages among heterogeneous rural producers and consumers; (4) the imperfect co

Beauty production in pp collisions at root s=2.76 TeV measured via semi-electronic decays

The ALICE Collaboration at the LHC reports measurement of the inclusive production cross section of electrons from semi-leptonic decays of beauty hadrons with rapidity |y| < 0.8 and transverse momentum 1 < p(T)< 10 GeV/c, in pp collisions at root s = 2.76 TeV. Electrons not originating from semi-electronic decay of beauty hadrons are suppressed using the impact parameter of the corresponding track

Osteoarthritis of the Knee: Review of Risk Factors and Treatment Programs with Special Reference to Evidence-Based Research

Osteoarthritis is a widespread disease leading to physical disability affecting quality of life. It is primarily regarded as a cartilage disease but affect all tissues of a joint. Osteoarthritis can be regarded as an organ failure. Knee osteoarthritis is common in Kuwait, especially in women. The main symptoms are pain, stiffness and weakness affecting knee function. The diagnosis is made by histo

Access to healthcare for people with intellectual disability

WHO has expressed that people with intellectual disabilities (ID) often are disadvantaged when it comes to accessing healthcare. However, a more solid evidence base is needed to determine if, and in which parts of the health system people with ID have lower access.

The impact of diabetes on coronary heart disease differs from that on ischaemic stroke with regard to the gender

Background: To study the diabetes related CVD risk between men and women of different ages. Methods: Hazards ratios (HRs) (95%CI) for acute CHD and ischaemic stroke events were estimated based on data of Finnish and Swedish cohorts of 5111 women and 4167 men. Results: 182 (3.6%) women and 348 (8.4%) men had CHD and 129 (2.5%) women and 137 (3.3%) men ischaemic stroke events. The multivariate adjus

Heterogeneous reaction between Li and anatase TiO2 nanoparticles under ultra-high vacuum

We demonstrate heterogeneous chemistry between Li and anatase TiO2 nanoparticles under UHV. The reduction of TiO2 upon formation of lithium oxide proceeds via two different schemes: one that reduces Ti4+ to Ti3+ and one that reduces Ti4+ directly to Ti2+. The second scheme sets in only after a critical degree of reduction (i.e. Li amount) has been reached (Li/Ti = 0.28) and is associated with rest

“This is a Book about Choices”: Gender, Genre and (Auto)Biographical Prison Narratives

Taking a point of departure in theoretical explorations of who is able to speak and be heard in particular generic contexts, this article examines a recent life-writing trend in Sweden: the publication of (auto)biographical narratives of incarceration, in particular written by female inmates. The article investigates the changing production and consumption practices of autobiographical texts. What

Laboratory oscillator strengths of Sc I in the near-infrared region for astrophysical applications

Context. Atomic data is crucial for astrophysical investigations. To understand the formation and evolution of stars, we need to analyse their observed spectra. Analysing a spectrum of a star requires information about the properties of atomic lines, such as wavelengths and oscillator strengths. However, atomic data of some elements are scarce, particularly in the infrared region, and this paper i

Induction correction model for rotation of two or three dihedral angles.

In a previous work we have introduced an intramolecular induction correction model. In this work we have used the model to calculate the total dipol moment of six molecules as a function of two or three dihedral angles that are simultaneously varied in the molecules. It is found that the induction model behaves very well for the systems studied when compared with a regular force field model where

Investigation of Epitaxial Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4-y Film Surface by Low Energy Electron Diffractometry

The surface of epitaxial Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4-y(001) (NCCO) film has been studied by low energy electron diffractometry (LEED) and photoelectron spectroscopy. Ar+ ion etching of a surface with subsequent annealing in oxygen at atmosphere pressure has been found to lead to the ordered structure restoration of surface layers with the symmetry type and lattice parameters corresponding to the NCCO phase.
