Grundvattenvärme : kvarteret Tärnan i Landskrona

Rapporten redovisar fältförsök, uppföljning och termohydraulisk utvärdering av en experimentbyggnadsanläggning i kvarteret Tärnan i Landskrona. En låg energiförbrukning eftersträvas genom överglasad gata m.m.

Vegetation history and lake-level changes from the Younger Dryas to the present in Eastern Pyrenees (France): pollen, plant macrofossils and lithostratigraphy from Lake Racou (2000 m a.s.l.)

A multi-proxy palaeoecological investigation including pollen, plant macrofossil, radiocarbon and sedimentological analyses, was performed on a small mountain lake in the Eastern Pyrenees. This has allowed the reconstruction of: ( 1) the vegetation history of the area based on five pollen diagrams and eight AMS(14)C dates and ( 2) the past lake-level changes, based on plant macrofossil, lithologic

Ska generna styra vad vi äter?

This article gives an overview of some ethical problems raised in connection to nutritional genomics, especially the use of knowledge from nutrigenomics as a basis for personalised nutrition after a genetic test.

A calibration system for soil carbon dioxide efflux measurement chambers: Description and application

Comparisons have revealed large discrepancies among the many methods for measuring soil CO2 efflux indicating the need for an absolute calibration of methods. This study presents a calibration system, constructed to imitate an area of soil, and its application to two different chamber systems for the measurement Of Soil CO2 efflux: one open and one closed dynamic. Air rich in CO2 was allowed to di

The nitric oxide synthase inhibitor NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester potentiates insulin secretion stimulated by glucose and L-arginine independently of its action on ATP-sensitive K+ channels

The nature of the action of the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) on hormone release from isolated islets was investigated. We found that glucose-induced insulin release was potentiated by L-NAME in the absence or presence of diazoxide, a potent K+ATP channel opener, as well as in the presence of diazoxide plus a depolarizing concentration of K+. At a

Stochastic Modeling and Operational Optimization in District Heating Systems

Operation of a district heating system is accomplished via a sequence of decisions by the operators controlling the system. These decisions are based on expectations of conditions in the system that are not known at decision time. The operators could be helped by a decision support system that computes predictions of future system variables and suggests appropriate control actions given the availa

Human immunoglobulin class and subclass specificity of Fc receptors induced by herpes simplex virus type 1

Herpes simplex virus is known to induce an immunoglobulin-binding cell surface receptor in infected cells that utilizes a nonimmune mechanism. In the present paper, we report the immunoglobulin class and subclass specificity of this receptor. Of the human immunoglobulins G(IgG), IgA, IgM, and IgD, as well as the structurally related beta2 microglobulin, only IgG and its Fc portion exhibited an inc

Learner-centred education in end-of-life care improved well being in home care staff: a prospective controlled study.

The aim of this controlled study was to evaluate a 1-year learner-centred educational project in end-of-life care for home care staff in a rural district of Sweden. Another rural district in the same region served as a control area. A 20-item questionnaire measuring attitudes towards end-of-life care was designed, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) scale was used to measure mental well

Approximate time-variable coherence analysis of multichannel signals

We present a new method for signal extraction from noisy multichannel epileptic seizure onset EEG signals. These signals are non-stationary which makes time-invariant filtering unsuitable. The new method assumes a signal model and performs denoising by filtering the signal of each channel using a time-variable filter which is an estimate of the Wiener filter. The approximate Wiener filters are obt

Structural studies of cysteine proteases and their inhibitors

Cysteine proteases (CPs) are responsible for many biochemical processes occurring in living organisms and they have been implicated in the development and progression of several diseases that involve abnormal protein turnover. The activity of CPs is regulated among others by their specific inhibitors: cystatins. The main aim of this review is to discuss the structure-activity relationships of cyst

Diffusion of lysozyme in gels and liquids - A general approach for the determination of diffusion coefficients using holographic laser interferometry

A study on diffusion measurements of the protein lysozyme in liquids and agarose gels, at different pH and ionic strengths, has been performed using holographic laser interferometry. The measurements showed that the diffusive flux was very dependent on pH and ionic strength when the protein was not at its isoelectric point or when the charge of the lysozyme molecules was not screened by ions in th

Shoulder dystocia and brachial plexus injury: a case-control study

Objective and Background. To evaluate risk factors for shoulder dystocia and brachial plexus injury using a case-control study at the departments of obstetrics and gynecology at the four largest hospitals in southern Sweden. All cases of shoulder dystocia between 1987 and 1993 inclusive were identified. For each case, two control infants with similar birthweight (+/- 100 g) and identical year of b

One-year low-dose erythromycin treatment of persistent chronic sinusitis after sinus surgery: clinical outcome and effects on mucociliary parameters and nasal nitric oxide.

OBJECTIVE: In 17 patients with chronic sinusitis persistent after sinus surgery, long-term, low-dose erythromycin therapy was tested. The aim of the investigation was to study the clinical outcome and effects on nasal nitric oxide (NO), ciliary beat frequency (CBF), and mucociliary transport (saccharine transit time). STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We conducted a prospective open study at a tertiary te

Tobacco smoking increases dramatically air concentrations of endotoxin.

We used a mass spectrometry-based assay for identifying the endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, LPS) marker (R)-3-hydroxytetradecanoic acid in cigarette smoke particles and found that smoking involved inhalation of 17.4 pmol of endotoxin per each smoked cigarette. Indoor exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) entailed inhalation of 12.1 pmol of LPS/m3 air, an amount that was 120 times higher tha

Integration between abutting retinas: Role of glial structures and associated molecules at the interface

PURPOSE. Integration between subretinal grafts and the host retina is limited in part by the presence of a barrier at the graft-host interface. This study was conducted to identify factors that may contribute to this barrier, by examining the distribution of glial structures and associated molecules in different setups of overlapping retinal pieces. METHODS. Neuroretinal tissue derived from mice t

Evidence of reduced measurement uncertainties from an FTIR instrument intercomparison at Kiruna, Sweden

We report the results of an intercomparison of vertical column amounts of HCl, HF, N(2)O, HNO(3), CH(4), O(3), CO(2) and N(2) derived from the spectra recorded by two ground-based FTIR spectrometers operated side-by-side using the sun as a source. The procedures used to record spectra and derive vertical column amounts followed the format of previous instrument intercomparisons organised by the Ne
