Childhood attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder as an extreme of a continuous trait: a quantitative genetic study of 8,500 twin pairs.

Background: Although the clinical utility of categorically defined attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is well established, there is also strong evidence supporting the notion of ADHD as an extreme of a continuous trait. Nevertheless, the question of whether the etiology is the same for different levels of DSM-IV ADHD symptoms remains to be investigated. The aim of this study was to as

Bile Acids Protect Expanding Hematopoietic Stem Cells from Unfolded Protein Stress in Fetal Liver.

During development, hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) undergo a rapid expansion in the fetal liver (FL) before settling in the adult bone marrow. We recently reported that proliferating adult HSCs are vulnerable to ER stress caused by accumulation of mis-folded proteins. Here, we find that FL-HSCs, despite an increased protein synthesis rate and a requirement for protein folding, do not upregulate E

Investigations of human EEG response to viewing fractal patterns.

Owing to the prevalence of fractal patterns in natural scenery and their growing impact on cultures around the world, fractals constitute a common feature of our daily visual experiences, raising an important question: what responses do fractals induce in the observer? We monitored subjects’ EEG while they were viewing fractals with different fractal dimensions, and the results show that significa

Induced variations in brassinosteroid genes define barley height and sturdiness, and expand the green revolution genetic toolkit

Reduced plant height and culm robustness are quantitative characteristics important for assuring cereal crop yield and quality under adverse weather conditions. A very limited number of short-culm mutant alleles were introduced into commercial crop cultivars during the Green Revolution. We identified phenotypic traits, including sturdy culm, specific for deficiencies in brassinosteroid biosynthesi

Epigenetic regulation of PPARGC1A in human type 2 diabetic islets and effect on insulin secretion.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Insulin secretion in pancreatic islets is dependent upon mitochondrial function and production of ATP. The transcriptional coactivator peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma coactivator-1 alpha (protein PGC-1alpha; gene PPARGC1A) is a master regulator of mitochondrial genes and its expression is decreased and related to impaired oxidative phosphorylation in muscle from p

Glutamate cysteine ligase catalytic subunit promoter polymorphisms and associations with type 1 diabetes age-at-onset and GAD65 autoantibody levels.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that glutamate cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC) promoter polymorphisms are susceptibility factors for type 1 diabetes (T1D), T1D age-at-onset and T1D autoantibodies. T1D patients and control subjects from the Swedish Childhood Diabetes Registry and the Swedish Diabetes Incidence Study registry were genotyped for two GCLC promoter polymor

An Adaptive Friction Compensator for Global Tracking in Robot Manipulators

A novel adaptive friction compensator based on a dynamic model recently proposed in the literature is presented in this paper. The compensator ensures global position tracking when applied to an n degree of freedom robot manipulator perturbed by friction forces with only measurements of position and velocity, and all the system parameters (robot and friction model) unknown. Instrumental for the so

Commissioning of the test fel at MAX-Lab

An installation for testing techniques related to seeding and harmonic generation has been completed at MAXlab. The aim is to study the processes around seeded harmonic generation at 130/88/54 nm, the 2/3/5 harmonic of a Ti: Sapphire laser. During the spring 2008 the commissioning work has begun and this paper will report on the progress. The test FEL is built around the existing linac injector at

An 8-Bit, 100-MHz low glitch interpolation DAC

This paper describes an 8-Bit, 100-MHz current steering CMOS low glitch interpolation digital to analog converter (DAC). It includes a 16-tap voltage controlled delay line and 8-Bit based linear interpolators, making the effective clock rate up to 1.6-GHz. With the linear interpolation, the requirement on the analog reconstruction filter is relaxed, and low glitch digital to analog conversion is a

A CMOS gm-C IF filter for Bluetooth

An 18th (4th+14th) order gm -C IF filter for the Bluetooth short-range radio, implemented in a 0.6 μm CMOS process, is presented. The filter bandwidth is 1 MHz, the center frequency fc is 3 MHz, the in-band group delay variation is 0.75 μs, and the stop-band attenuation at fc±1 MHz is at least 47 dB. The noise floor is 250 μVr.m.s. and the spurious free dynamic range is at least 58 dB for out-of-b

Who Gets What in Coalition Governments? Predictors of Portfolio Allocation in Parliamentary Democracies

Ministerial portfolios are the most obvious payoffs for parties entering a governing coalition in parliamentary democracies. This renders the bargaining over portfolios an important phase of the government formation process. The question of ‘who gets what, and why?’ in terms of ministerial remits has not yet received much attention by coalition or party scholars. This article focuses on this quali

Collegiality and efficiency in bureaucracy

This article addresses the relation between the design of regulatory agencies and efficiency, arguing that authority concentrated to a single individual outperforms more collegial decision-making when the regulated firms’ interests are aligned. The tentative explanation is that concentrated leadership reduces the risk for capture. This argument is developed from an empirical case on the markets fo

Association between self-reported alcohol consumption and diastolic dysfunction : a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: While alcohol consumption is associated with common risk factors for diastolic dysfunction the independent impact of low levels of alcohol consumption on this condition in a community setting is still unclear. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore this association in a representative population sample employing optimal echocardiographic techniques.DESIGN: Cross-secti

Heart age gap estimated by explainable advanced electrocardiography is associated with cardiovascular risk factors and survival

Aims: Deep neural network artificial intelligence (DNN-AI)-based Heart Age estimations have been presented and used to show that the difference between an electrocardiogram (ECG)-estimated Heart Age and chronological age is associated with prognosis. An accurate ECG Heart Age, without DNNs, has been developed using explainable advanced ECG (A-ECG) methods. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic value
