Accelerating a car from rest : friction, power and forces

The directions of frictional forces for bodies in motion are conceptually challenging. Students may be able to provide a correct solution using only calculus without drawing free-body diagrams. This can make their misconceptions go unnoticed and put them at risk to become further reinforced. Here, we discuss first-year bachelor students’ responses to multiple-choice questions and an open-ended que

‘We do what we can with what we have’ - The daily life of people with disabilities and the long and complicated road to improve it in Pando Bolivia

In the search for grasping how the everyday life experience for people with a disability is shaped in relation to the local social and political complexities in Cobija/Pando four themes are crucial to understand. Firstly, illustrating how the rhetorical definition of disability removes the wrongfulness or responsibility from the shoulders of the individual to an exclusive social environment. Even

Tuning halide perovskite energy levels

The ability to control the energy levels in semiconductors is compelling for optoelectronic applications. In this study, we managed to tune the work function (WF) of halide perovskite semiconductors using self-assembled monolayers of small molecules to induce stable dipoles at the surface. The direction and intensity of the surface dipoles rely on specific molecule-to-surface interactions. Electro

Virtuosos of Mimesis and Mimicry : a Case Study of Movements Propagating Conspiracy Theories in Ireland and Poland

In recent years, conspiracy theories have been increasingly defined as a new social enemy, a threat to democracy. But scholars of conspiracy theories also point out that we have very little research that examines a direct link between conspiracy theories and political practice. We still know very little about the ways in which conspiratorial beliefs influence different forms of civic engagement an

Spatial variability of infiltration in a semi-arid environment

Fifty-two double-ring infiltrometer tests, performed in a small, partly urbanized catchment in northern Tunisia are analyzed. Spatial variability is characterized by use of cross-correlation functions. Spatial patterns of infiltration properties are shown to be governed by geomorphology and occurring vegetation. Different geomorphological zones and zones with equal density of vegetation tend to be

Entrepreneurial assemblages from off the map : (trans) national designs for Tangier

Poststructuralist perspectives need to be reconciled with political economic readings of urban globalization. One approach complements the other: the enactment of distantiated circuits and the territorialization of flows occur within existing geographies of uneven development while contingently reproducing or reshaping such spatial conditions of possibility. We argue that broadening the realm of c

Role of CsMnCl3Nanocrystal Structure on Its Luminescence Properties

Cesium manganese chloride (CsMnCl3) nanocrystals (NCs) have recently been recognized as potential lead-free perovskite candidates for red emission. To ascertain how the luminescence properties depend on the NC structures formed under different synthesis conditions, we synthesized CsMnCl3NCs in two polymorphic structures, namely, cubic (c-CsMnCl3) and rhombohedral (r-CsMnCl3), by tuning the reactio

Insertion of the CXXC domain of KMT2A into YAP1 : An unusual mechanism behind the formation of a chimeric oncogenic protein

Most neoplasia-associated gene fusions are formed through the fusion of the 5′-part of one gene with the 3′-part of another. We here describe a unique mechanism, by which a part of the KMT2A gene through an insertion replaces part of the YAP1 gene. The resulting YAP1::KMT2A::YAP1 (YKY) fusion was verified by RT-PCR in three cases of sarcoma morphologically resembling sclerosing epithelioid fibrosa

Do kinematic models reduce the effects of soft tissue artefacts in skin marker-based motion analysis? An in vivo study of knee kinematics

We investigated the effects of including kinematic constraints in the analysis of knee kinematics from skin markers and compared the result to simultaneously recorded trajectories of bone pin markers during gait of six healthy subjects. The constraint equations that were considered for the knee were spherical and revolute joints, which have been frequently used in musculoskeletal modelling. In the

A linear soft tissue artefact model for human movement analysis : Proof of concept using in vivo data

We investigated the accuracy of a linear soft tissue artefact (STA) model in human movement analysis. Simultaneously recorded bone-mounted pin and skin marker data for the thigh and shank during walking, cutting and hopping were used to measure and model the motion of the skin marker clusters within anatomical reference frames (ARFs). This linear model allows skin marker movements relative to the

Born to Be (Sub)Prime: An Exploratory Analysis

We study how inheriting parents' credit histories affects the initial credit scores, access to credit, and life cycle borrowing of young individuals entering the credit market. We establish that inherited histories significantly positively affect initial scores, which in turn are very persistent. Inherited histories only affect outcomes through initial credit scores, which then have significant pe

Transfer patterns in the Swedish football clubs – a gift economy of loyalties and emotions

This article explores how football players and scouts in Sweden narrate their stories of transfers within the Swedish football system. This article presents first-person narrations as male players as well as scouts from elite clubs were interviewed in connection to transfer patters to, from and within Sweden. The aim is to analyse how the transfer system takes shape in stories presented by scouts

Improving serious illness communication : a qualitative study of clinical culture

OBJECTIVE: Communication about patients' values, goals, and prognosis in serious illness (serious illness communication) is a cornerstone of person-centered care yet difficult to implement in practice. As part of Serious Illness Care Program implementation in five health systems, we studied the clinical culture-related factors that supported or impeded improvement in serious illness conversations.

Entrepreneurialism in the globalising city-region of Tangier, Morocco

This paper inspects the territorial and state restructuring of the globalising city-region of Tangier. It argues that recent economic growth and transnational connections follow new forms of entrepreneurial development that aggravate social and spatial inequalities. The analysis shows that these forms of urban and regional management are embedded in the neoliberalised, yet monarch-centric Moroccan

From Transistors to Phototransistors by Tailoring the Polymer Stacking

It is universally acknowledged that highly photosensitive transistors are strongly dependent on the high carrier mobility of polymer-based semiconductors. However, the polymer π–π stacking and aggregation, required to increase the charge mobility, conversely inhibit the dissociation of photogenerated charge carriers, in turn accelerating the geminate recombination of electron-hole pairs. To explor

EU, go home? A frame analysis of the anti-tourism social movement in Barcelona and implications for EU support

How does anti-tourism affect support for the EU? This question has gained a newly found relevance in recent years, as anti-tourism protests have appeared in many European cities with high levels of tourism. Despite this relevance, some elements of these protests have not received as much attention as they deserve. This thesis will aim to fill one of the gaps in the literature: how anti-tourism soc

Vår jämförande fallstudie använder en blandning av mest olika dThe purpose of this report is to examine how the countries Botswana and Chile came to escape the political resource curse. The political resource curse suggests a negative relationship between natural resources and democratic development. Research suggests that institutions affect how a country is affected by the existence of natural resources. Our comparative case study uses a mix of most-differe
