Revolutionizing Food Production : Integrating Industry 4.0 and Carbon Neutral Strategies for a Sustainable Future

The food industry is actively adopting carbon neutral strategies aligned with the principles of Industry 4.0 to establish long-term goals for reducing carbon emissions and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon food production industry. Industry 4.0, often referred to as the fourth industrial revolution, emphasizes the integration of digital technologies, automation, and data exchange into ma

Birth of dairy 4.0 : Opportunities and challenges in adoption of fourth industrial revolution technologies in the production of milk and its derivatives

Embracing innovation and emerging technologies is becoming increasingly important to address the current global challenges facing many food industry sectors, including the dairy industry. Growing literature shows that the adoption of technologies of the fourth industrial revolution (named Industry 4.0) has promising potential to bring about breakthroughs and new insights and unlock advancement opp

Engaging in educational design processes for sustainable learning : Learning and becoming in practice

The aim of this study is to describe in what way the students' learning outcomes and theoretical assumptions are used by teachers to enhance the design of lessons with a focus on development of sustainable learning over time. Seven teachers and 71 students in an upper secondary school participated, along with one researcher. Three lessons were designed and implemented in three different student gr

Unleashing the power of internet of things and blockchain: A comprehensive analysis and future directions

As the fusion of the Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain technology advances, it is increasingly shaping diverse fields. The potential of this convergence to fortify security, enhance privacy, and streamline operations has ignited considerable academic interest, resulting in an impressive body of literature. However, there is a noticeable scarcity of studies employing Latent Dirichlet Allocati

Challenges to Lean 4.0 in the Pharma Supply Chain Sustainability

The Pharma sector is increasingly under pressure to improve the sustainability of supply chains, as consumers and regulators require greater transparency, efficiency, and accountability. Although Lean 4.0 has created a lot of buzz in the organization, the pharmaceutical sector faces challenges in implementing it. The main goal of this literature review is to identify the challenges of Lean 4.0 for

Use of industry 4.0 technologies to reduce and valorize seafood waste and by-products: A narrative review on current knowledge

Fish and other seafood products represent a valuable source of many nutrients and micronutrients for the human diet and contribute significantly to global food security. However, considerable amounts of seafood waste and by-products are generated along the seafood value and supply chain, from the sea to the consumer table, causing severe environmental damage and significant economic loss. Therefor

On-demand mapping and integration of thematic data

Cartographic mashup is a powerful tool for users to visualize thematic data together with base maps, and it is increasingly popular due to the better availability of geodata. In current typical mashups, thematic data and base mapscome from different providers without any connection between the data sets, and their scales are not synchronized. In this paper, we firstly explore the problems in such

A Narrative Turn : Human Agency in Rock Carvings at Nämforsen, Northern Sweden

The idea to create pictorial narratives seems to have occurred long after humans learned to produce iconic images, that is, depictions based on visual similarity to external objects. In Scandinavia, e.g., in Gärde, Sweden or Stykket and Bøla, Norway, early Mesolithic images (e.g., rock carvings from before c. 5000 BCE) often feature animals that are solitary or without suggestion of causal or narr

Association of Circulating Long Noncoding 7S RNA with Deep Vein Thrombosis

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a recognized factor in the pathogenesis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The role of 7S RNA, a long noncoding RNA that plays an important role in mitochondrial function, in DVT remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential use of 7S RNA as a biomarker in DVT. Plasma samples were obtained from 237 patients (aged 16-95 years) with suspected DVT recr

The South African Families Database

Very little is known about what family life looked like for settlers in colonial South Africa during the 18th or 19th century, nor how events over these centuries might have affected demographic change. The primary reason for this lacuna is a shortage of adequate data. Historians and genealogists have, over the last century, worked to combine the rich administrative records that are available in t

Prolonged survival time of Daphnia magna exposed to polylactic acid breakdown nanoplastics

Polylactic acid nanoparticles (PLA NPs) according to food and drug administration are biodegradable and biocompatible polymers that have received a lot of attention due to their natural degradation mechanism. Although there is already available information concerning the effects of PLA microplastic to aquatic organisms, the knowledge about PLA NPs is still vague. In the present study, we analyzed

Towards an Ecotopia – Digital Utopia or Dystopia?

The paper embarks on an exploration of how technological advancements are poised to reshape the landscape of future consumption and marketing practices and extend our understanding of whether this trajectory is potentially leading toward a future digital utopia or a dystopia. Drawing upon the theoretical understanding from Marshall McLuhan, this research investigates the metaverse as a novel techn

State-of-the-art capabilities in LPJ-GUESS

LPJ-GUESS is an advanced DGVM including detailed forest demography and management, croplands, wetlands, specialised arctic processes, emissions of nonCO2 GHGs and a highly flexible land-use change scheme which tracks transitions between different land-uses. It is the vegetation component of the EC-Earth CMIP6 ESM, the RCA-GUESS regional ESM, and also has a European mode operating at tree species l

Visual noise from caustic flicker does not affect the hunting success of cuttlefish

Many animals rely on their visual systems to detect, locate or discriminate information in their environment. Environmental ‘visual noise’, however, may interfere with an animal's ability to detect visual information, affecting decision-making processes. A ubiquitous form of visual noise in aquatic environments is caustic flicker: moving light patterns caused by the refraction of light through sur

Birth Weight Is Associated With Clonal Hematopoiesis of Indeterminate Potential and Cardiovascular Outcomes in Adulthood

BACKGROUND: High and low birth weight are independently associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk in adulthood. Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), the age-related clonal expansion of hematopoietic cells with preleu-kemic somatic mutations, predicts incident cardiovascular disease independent of traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Whether birth weight predicts

Incidence and burden of injury at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games held during the COVID-19 pandemic : A prospective cohort study of 66 045 athlete days

Objective To describe the epidemiology of injuries at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, including injuries sustained in the new sports of badminton and taekwondo. Methods Injury data were obtained daily via the established web-based injury and illness surveillance system (WEB-IISS; 81 countries, 3836 athletes) and local organising committee medical facilities (81 countries, 567 athletes). Univariat

DNA methylation partially mediates antidiabetic effects of metformin on HbA1c levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes

Aims: Despite metformin being used as first-line pharmacological therapy for type 2 diabetes, its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We aimed to determine whether metformin altered DNA methylation in newly-diagnosed individuals with type 2 diabetes. Methods and Results: We found that metformin therapy is associated with altered methylation of 26 sites in blood from Scandinavian discovery and re
