Cost-effectiveness of risedronate for the treatment of osteoporosis and prevention of fractures in postmenopausal women

Randomized, double-blind, controlled studies have shown that treatment with risedronate reduces the risk of vertebral fracture in postmenopausal women with established vertebral osteoporosis. They also show that the drug decreases the risk of non-vertebral fractures in women with osteoporosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the cost-effectiveness of risedronate in postmenopausal women wi

Classification of all travelling-wave solutions for some nonlinear dispersive equations

We present a method for the classification of all weak travelling-wave solutions for some dispersive nonlinear wave equations. When applied to the Camassa-Holm or the Degasperis-Procesi equation, the approach shows the existence of not only smooth, peaked and cusped travelling-wave solutions, but also more exotic solutions with fractal-like wave profiles.

Kyrklig och social reform : motiveringar till diakoni 1845-1965

The main purpose of this dissertation is to see how proponents of diaconia justified the establishment of three Swedish diaconal institutions: Diaconissanstalten 1851 (The Institution for Deaconesses, Stockholm, now Ersta diakonissällskap/Ersta Association for Diaconal Work), Stockholms Stadsmission 1853 (The Stockholm City Mission) and Svenska Diakonanstalten 1898 (The Swedish institution for Dea

Respiratory and ocular symptoms in workers exposed to potassium aluminium-tetrafluoride soldering flux

Objectives Exposure to aluminium compounds, such as fluorides in gaseous and particulate form, places people who work in potrooms at risk for respiratory symptoms. Workers in potrooms, however, also are exposed to a number of other air contaminants. In this study, we present the first report of a dose-response relationship after exposure to potassium aluminium tetrafluoride (KAlF4) and the influen

Fairness in Communication and Computer Network Design

In communication networks, fair sharing of resources is an important issue for one main reason. The growth of network capacity is in general not matching the rapid growth of traffic. Consequently, the resources consumed by each user have to be limited. This implies that users cannot always be assigned the end-to-end bandwidth they ask for. Instead, the limited network resources should be distribut

Assessment of Left Ventricular Dysfunction and Remodelling by Determination of Atrioventricular Plane Displacement and Simplified Echocardiography

Heart failure is a common disease characterised by poor prognosis and frequent hospitalisations, constituting a major economic burden to society. Mortality and morbidity can be reduced by optimal treatment, requiring objective evaluation of cardiac function and anatomy. The development of symptomatic HF can be prevented by initiating adequate treatment in early stages when LVD is still asymptomati

Chemical and mutational modification of histidines in violaxanthin de-epoxidase from Spinachcia oleracea.

The violaxanthin de-epoxidase (VDE) gene from spinach (Spinacia oleracea) was cloned, sequenced (GenBank AJ 250433), and expressed in Escherichia coli. The highest obtained conversion rate of violaxanthin was 86 nmol s-1 per litre of growth medium, corresponding to an amount of active enzyme of 0.4 mg l-1. Sequence comparison between VDE from different species were made and particular interest was

Airway epithelial repair: breathtakingly quick and multipotentially pathogenic

Epithelial shedding, even to the point of airway denudation, had already been described as a common and unifying feature of asthma by the latter half of the 19th century. However, the repair processes that specifically follow the shedding-like loss of epithelial cells have only recently been examined in vivo. This paper discusses the exceedingly fast epithelial restitution and the potential pathog

Effects of continuous Trichloroethylene inhalation on different strains of mice

Seven different strains of mice (wild, C57BL, DBA, B6CBA, A/sn, NZB and NMRI) were continuously exposed to 150 ppm trichloroethylene (TCE) during 30 days. After exposure all strains showed large increases in liver weight, while changes in kidney and spleen weights were small. Plasma butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) activity increased in males of all strains and in females of strains A/sn and NZB. The

Low serum concentration of all-trans and 13-cis retinoic acids in patients treated with phenytoin, carbamazepine and valproate. Possible relation to teratogenicity

All-trans retinoic acid deficiency resulting from ethanol's interference with the synthesis of all-trans retinoic acid from retinol was recently suggested to cause the malformations of the fetal alcohol syndrome. Phenytoin, carbamazepine and valproate, might be teratogenic because they lower the concentration of all-trans retinoic acid in serum, by inducing the enzyme systems in the liver responsi

Effect of rock climbing on the calcicolous lichen community of limestone cliffs in the northern Swiss Jura Mountains

Exposed limestone cliffs in the Swiss Jura Mountains harbour a diverse lichen community with some rare species. Sport climbing has recently increased in popularity on these cliffs. We examined the effect of sport climbing on calcicolous lichens by assessing species diversity and cover of lichens in climbed and unclimbed areas of 10 isolated cliffs in the northern Swiss Jura Mountains. We also inve

The costoclavicular joint

Two patients with a costoclavicular joint were discovered by chance during a survey of cervical spines. These seem to be the first to be described in the radiological literature. No other case was found in a further review of 500 consecutive spine radiographs. The costoclavicular joint is a variant of the ligamentous connection between the medial part of the clavicle and the first rib.
