Von Willebrand factor mediates pneumococcal aggregation and adhesion in blood flow
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major cause of community acquired pneumonia and septicaemia in humans. These diseases are frequently associated with thromboembolic cardiovascular complications. Pneumococci induce the exocytosis of endothelial Weibel-Palade Bodies and thereby actively stimulate the release of von Willebrand factor (VWF), which is an essential glycoprotein of the vascular hemostasis.

Numerical study of dense particle flows under planar shear
In this thesis I conducted numerical simulations to study the flow behavior of dense particle flows composed of hard particles under planar shear using the discrete element method. The simulations were carried out in two dimensional systems, where the particles are modelled as circular discs. The discs are non-Brownian and neutrally buoyant. The granular flows can be either dry or immersed in a Ne
Med målsättningen att utforska villkoren för oThe tertiary sector accounts for a rising share of labour disputes, making studies of public sector strikes increasingly relevant to the understanding of labour market power relations. With the intention of exploring conditions for public sector labour struggles, this study aims to empirically examine the extensive 2003 wage strike carried out by the Swedish Municipal Workers’ Union [Kommunal]. It
From Lock-In to Phase-Out : Pathways Towards Fossil Fuel Subsidy Reform
Avhandlingen behandlar fråThis dissertation investigates the political determinants of fossil fuel subsidy reform in OECD countries between 2009 and 2023. Despite widespread recognition of their economic inefficiency and environmental harm, fossil fuel subsidies remain entrenched, with OECD countries collectively sustaining around USD 100 billion in annual support. The research addresses why some governments successfully r

Studying multimodal language processing : The integration of speech and gestures
All language use is a multimodal endeavor. Language processing must deal with both auditory and visual signals and integrate them with millisecond precision. This chapter presents evidence for the inherently multimodal nature of language use, outlines the implications for the study of L2 processing, and provides a survey of the main methods used to probe multimodal processing in production and com

The evolution of texture and microstructure uniformity in tantalum sheets during asymmetric cross rolling
The evolution of texture and microstructure uniformity in tantalum (Ta) sheets for sputtering target applications is analyzed in detail across the thickness during asymmetric cross rolling (ACR). Three samples with different strains, i.e. 60%, 70% and 80% are obtained via ACR processing. X-ray diffraction suggests that the increase of strain during ACR results in the randomization of deformation t
Non-monotonic evolution of surface roughness in a stainless steel during cold deformation
In this study, polished and unpolished sheet samples of austenitic stainless steel 316L were tensile strained to investigate the evolution of surface roughness based on Sa- and Ra characteristics. In polished steel sheets, surface roughness increases with the increase of true strain up to a maximum of e = 0.14. Thereafter, roughness decreases until e = 0.26 for approximately 25%, and then becomes
A dose based approach for evaluation of inter-observer variations in target delineation
Background and purpose: Substantial inter-observer variations in target delineation have been presented previously. Target delineation for paediatric cases is difficult due to the small number of children, the variation in paediatric targets, the number of study protocols, and the individual patient's specific needs and demands. Uncertainties in target delineation might lead to under-dosage or ove
Population of lead isotopes in binary reactions using a Rb 94 radioactive beam
We measured absolute cross sections for neutron transfer channels populated in the Rb94+Pb208 binary reaction. Cross sections have been extracted identifying directly the lead isotopes with the high efficiency MINIBALL γ-ray array coupled to a particle detector combined with a radioactive Rb94 beam delivered at Elab=6.2 MeV/nucleon by the HIE-ISOLDE facility. We observed sizable cross sections in
Measurement of jet-medium interactions via direct photon-hadron correlations in Au+Au and d+Au collisions at sNN =200 GeV
We present direct photon-hadron correlations in 200 GeV/A Au+Au, d+Au, and p+p collisions, for direct photon pT from 5-12 GeV/c, collected by the PHENIX Collaboration in the years from 2006 to 2011. We observe no significant modification of jet fragmentation in d+Au collisions, indicating that cold nuclear matter effects are small or absent. Hadrons carrying a large fraction of the quark's momentu
Elliptic and triangular flow of (anti)deuterons in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN =5.02 TeV
The measurements of the (anti)deuteron elliptic flow (v2) and the first measurements of triangular flow (v3) in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision sNN = 5.02 TeV are presented. A mass ordering at low transverse momentum (pT) is observed when comparing these measurements with those of other identified hadrons, as expected from relativistic hydrodynamics. The m
Hanbury-Brown-Twiss interferometry and collectivity in p+p, p+Pb, and Pb+Pb collisions
Hanbury Brown-Twiss interferometry (HBT) provides crucial insights into both the space-time structure and the momentum-space evolution of ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions at freeze-out. In particular, the dependence of the HBT radii on the transverse pair momentum KT and the system charged multiplicity dNch/dη may reflect the mechanisms driving collective behavior in small systems. Testing self-adaptive software with probabilistic guarantees on performance metrics
This paper discusses the problem of testing the performance of the adaptation layer in a self-adaptive system. The problem is notoriously hard, due to the high degree of uncertainty and variability inherent in an adaptive software application. In particular, providing any type of formal guarantee for this problem is extremely difficult. In this paper we propose the use of a rigorous probabilistic
Distribution of pressure on the breast in mammography using flexible and rigid compression plates : implications on patient handling
Background: Breast compression in mammography is important but is a source of discomfort and has been linked to screening non-attendance. Reducing compression has little effect on breast thickness, and likely little effect on image quality, due to force being absorbed in the stiff juxta thoracic area instead of in the central breast. Purpose: To investigate whether a flexible compression plate can
