Meson, baryon, and glueball masses in the MIT bag model

We present a consistent and unified study of the spectrum of low-lying mesons, baryons, and glueballs using the MIT bag model, incorporating several improvements in the model. We correct for the center-of-mass motion, use a running coupling αs(R), include self-energy terms for quarks and gluons confined in a cavity, and get the bag constant from a model of the QCD vacuum. Our fit to the meson and

wing blister, A new Drosophila laminin alpha chain required for cell adhesion and migration during embryonic and imaginal development

We report the molecular and functional characterization of a new α chain of laminin in Drosophila. The new laminin chain appears to be the Drosophila counterpart of both vertebrate α2 (also called merosin) and α1 chains, with a slightly higher degree of homology to α2, suggesting that this chain is an ancestral version of both αl and α2 chains. During embryogenesis, the protein is associated with

Discovery of Teneurins

Teneurins were first discovered and published in 1993 and 1994, in Drosophila melanogaster as Ten-a and Ten-m. They were initially described as cell surface proteins, and as pair-rule genes. Later, they proved to be type II transmembrane proteins, and not to be pair-rule genes. Ten-m might nonetheless have had an ancestral function in clock-based segmentation as a Ten-m oscillator. The turn of the

Epithelial synthesis of tenascin at tips of growing bronchi and graded accumulation in basement membrane and mesenchyme

The extracellular matrix protein, tenascin, has been proposed as mediator in epithelial-mesenchymal interactions because of its characteristic distribution during embryogenesis. Here we compared the accumulation of tenascin and laminin in the early chicken lung bud. Laminin is deposited in the basement membrane, starting at the tips and increasing along the shafts of growing primary and secondary

Finite Element Modeling for vibration transmission in a Cross Laminated Timber structure

This paper deals with a certain type of C.L.T. (Cross Laminated Timber) construction, in a residential building in Fristad, Sweden. The objective is to study impact noise transmission, at the lower frequency range (10-200 Hz), where wooden dwellings perform inefficiently, in terms of acoustic quality. The vibrational behavior of lightweight structures and specifically a multilayered floor separati

SPH Simulations of Stephan's Quintet

We present smoothed particle hydrodynamic models of the interactions in the compact galaxy group, Stephan's Quintet. Adding thermohydrodynamic effects to the earlier collisionless N-body simulations of Renaud et al., we further investigate the dynamical interaction history and evolution of the intergalactic gas of Stephan's Quintet. Specifically, we reproduce the major stellar and gas features of

Vibrations analysis in high-tech facility : A swedish light synchrotron

MAX-lab is a national laboratory operated jointly by the Swedish Research Council and Lund University. As of today, the MAX project consists of three facilities, (three storage rings): MAX-I, MAX-II, MAX-III and one electron pre-accelerator called MAX-Injector. A new storage ring is needed at the benefit of material science, such as nanotechnology. MAX-IV will be 100 times more efficient than exis

Valproate in combination with rituximab and CHOP as first-line therapy in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (VALFRID)

The aims of the present study were to establish the maximally tolerated dose (MTD) of the histone deacetylase inhibitor valproate together with R-CHOP (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone) in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). A phase 1 dose escalation study of valproate together with R-CHOP followed by a dose expansion study using the establishe

Prevention of falls in old people-a review

Physical training, if including specific different training modalities, reduces the fall risk in healthy community-dwelling older people, as does a home hazards modification programme. Vitamin D supplementation in older individuals with low levels of vitamin D, adjustment of psychotropic medication, and structured modification of multi-pharmacy are all drug-focused programmes that reduce the numbe

Increase of bikunin and alpha1-microglobulin concentrations in urine of rats during pregnancy is due to decreased tubular reabsorption

Bikunin and alpha1-microglobulin are two plasma proteins of about 25 kDa which are made in the liver from a common precursor. The concentration of bikunin in human urine has been shown to increase several fold during various conditions of stress. The mechanism behind this increase is unknown. We have studied pregnant rats and found that the bikunin and alpha1-microglobulin levels in their urine in

Evidence of endothelial inflammation, T cell activation, and T cell reallocation in uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria

To explain the observation that acute Plasmodium falciparum malaria is associated with a transient inability of peripheral blood cells to respond to antigenic stimulation in vitro, we have postulated the disease-induced reallocation of peripheral lymphocytes, possibly by adhesion to inflamed endothelium. We measured plasma levels of soluble markers of endothelial inflammation and T cell activation

Utilization of digital primary care in Sweden : Descriptive analysis of claims data on demographics, socioeconomics, and diagnoses

Objective: As digital technologies for health continue to develop, the ability to provide primary care services to patients with new symptoms will grow. In Sweden, two providers of digital primary care have expanded rapidly over the past years giving rise to a heated debate with clear policy implications. The purpose of the study is to present a descriptive review of digital primary care as curren

Three-dimensional flow structures and droplet-gas mixing process of a liquid jet in supersonic crossflow

The mixing process of a liquid jet in supersonic crossflow with a Mach number of 2.1 was investigated numerically using large eddy simulation (LES) based on the Eulerian-Lagrangian method. The gas phase was described using the Navier-Stokes equations and the liquid phase was represented using discrete droplets, which were injected and tracked in the computational domain individually according to N

Anisotropic-Strain-Induced Band Gap Engineering in Nanowire-Based Quantum Dots

Tuning light emission in bulk and quantum structures by strain constitutes a complementary method to engineer functional properties of semiconductors. Here, we demonstrate the tuning of light emission of GaAs nanowires and their quantum dots up to 115 meV by applying strain through an oxide envelope. We prove that the strain is highly anisotropic and clearly results in a component along the NW lon
