Coexisting normal and triaxial superdeformed structures in Lu-165

High-spin states in Lu-165 were populated in the La-139(Si-30, 4n) reaction at a beam energy of 152 MeV and gamma-ray coincidences were measured with the EUROBALL spectrometer array. Nine new rotational bands were discovered, known band structures were considerably extended and many inter-band transitions were found. Structures with normal deformation coexist with bands associated with the strongl

Selection of Resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae during Penicillin Treatment In Vitro and in Three Animal Models.

Pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) properties for the selection of resistant pneumococci were studied by using three strains of the same serotype (6B) for mixed-culture infection in time-kill experiments in vitro and in three different animal models, the mouse peritonitis, the mouse thigh, and the rabbit tissue cage models. Treatment regimens with penicillin were designed to give a wide

Penicillin-resistant pneumococci in Sweden 1997-2003: Increased multiresistance despite stable prevalence and decreased antibiotic use

Antimicrobial resistance patterns and capsular groups of penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae (PRP; MIC penicillin G >= 0.5 mg/ml) in Sweden between 1997 and 2003 were described, and trends in resistance and antibiotic sales during the same period were compared. The most common serogroups were in descending order 9, 19, 14, 23, and 6. Despite a low and stable annual PRP rate (proportion o

Detours in bird migration

Bird migration routes often follow detours where passages across ecological barriers are reduced in extent. This occurs in spite of the fact that long barrier crossings are within the birds' potential flight range capacity. Long-distance flights are associated with extra energy costs for transport of the heavy fuel loads required. This paper explores how important the fuel transport costs, estimat

Age- and serogroup-related differences in observed durations of nasopharyngeal carriage of penicillin-resistant pneumococci

Using data from an ongoing Swedish intervention project, the observed durations of nasopharyngeal carriage of penicillin-nonsusceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae (PNSP) (MIC of penicillin G of >= 0.5 mu g/ml) stratified by both pneumococcal serogroup and age of the carrier were compared. The means and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated by fitting a gamma distribution to the observed dura

Time-resolved X-ray diffraction study of the ferroelectric phase-transition in DKDP

We have performed experiments where DKDP has been irradiated by short (100 fs), laser pulses. Subsequently X-ray pulses with a duration of 100 ps were used as a probe. Time-resolved X-ray diffraction enables monitoring of the transitions between the paraelectric and ferroelectric phases. By recording the intensity of a peak only present in the paraelectric phase, we observe indications of a phase-

Dynamics of the cationic, bioelectrical and secretory responses to formycin A in pancreatic islet cells

The dynamics of the cationic, bioelectrical and secretory responses to formycin A were monitored in pancreatic islet cells in order to assess whether this adenosine analogue, which is known to be converted to formycin A 5'-triphosphate in isolated islets, triggers the same sequence of ionic events as that otherwise involved in the process of nutrient-stimulated insulin release and currently attrib

Contested Belonging : An Indigenous Peoples Struggle for Forest and Identity in Sub-Himalayan

This dissertation deals with the modern predicament of the Rabha or Kocha people, their survival in the forest and their quest for identity. Rabhas are one of India's indigenous or tribal people, and they live in the jungle tracts where the Himalayan mountains meet the plains of Bengal. When the area came under British rule and was converted into tea gardens and reserved forests Rabhas were forced

Richard P. Bunge memorial lecture. Nerve injury and repair--a challenge to the plastic brain.

Repair and reconstruction of major nerve trunks in the upper extremity is a very challenging surgical problem. Today, there is no surgical repair technique that can assure recovery of tactile discrimination in the hand of an adult patient following nerve repair. In contrast, young individuals usually attain a complete recovery of functional sensibility. The outcome from nerve repair depends mainly

Mechanistic information on the reaction of cis- and trans-[RuCl2(DMSO)(4)] with d(T(2)GGT(2)) derived from MALDI-TOF and HPLC studies

Reactions of trans and cis isomers of the Ru-II complex [RuCl2(DMSO)(4)] with single-stranded hexanucleotide d(T(2)GGT(2)) were studied in aqueous solutions in the absence and presence of excess chloride by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Despite the different reactive species formed from

Variability in muscle fibre areas in whole human quadriceps muscle. How much and why?

To determine the variability in fibre areas in the human vastus lateralis muscle, cross-sections (15 microns) of whole autopsied muscles from eight young men have been prepared, and the cross-sectional area (CSA) of 375 type 1 and 375 type 2 fibres has been measured in five different regions throughout each muscle. The CSA of both fibre types varied significantly within all muscle cross-sections.

Gut microbiota and development of atopic eczema in 3 European birth cohorts

Background: Stimulation of the immune system by gut microbes might prevent allergy development. Objective: The present study examined the hypothesis that sensitization to food allergens and atopic eczema are influenced by the infantile intestinal colonization pattern. Methods: Infants were recruited perinatally in Goteborg (n = 116), London (n = 108), and Rome (n = 100). Commensal bacteria were id

Theoretical characterization of the absorption spectra of phenanthrene and its radical cation

The vertical absorption spectra of phenanthrene and its radical cation have been studied theoretically by means of a multiconfigurational second-order perturbation approach. Singlet-singlet transition energies and oscillator strengths, and singlet-triplet excitation energies have been studied in the absorption spectrum of phenanthrene up to 6 eV. The absorption spectrum of the phenanthrene radical
