A thermodynamically consistent finite strain micro-sphere framework for phase-transformations
We extend a thermodynamically consistent finite strain micro-sphere framework elaborated by Carol et al. towards the modelling of phase-transformations to allow for the simulation of polycrystalline solids such as, e.g., shape memory alloys and shape memory polymers undergoing large deformations. The considered phase-transformation mechanism is based on statistical physics and allows the considera
Effects of CRF2R agonist on tumor growth and cachexia in mice implanted with Lewis lung carcinoma cells
Previous studies have demonstrated an effect of corticotropin-releasing factor 2 receptor (CRF2R) agonists in the maintenance of skeletal muscle mass. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a CRF2R agonist in preserving skeletal muscle in a mouse cachexia model. Implantation of a fast-growing tumor to mice (Lewis lung carcinoma) resulted in a clear cachectic state characterized by a

Information, stochastic dominance and bidding : The case of Treasury auctions
We explore the link between informativeness of signals, stochastic dominance and equilibrium bids in a multi-unit auction with risk averse bidders. We show that for a particular class of signal distributions, informativeness is related to conditional first-order stochastic dominance, so that a higher degree of informativeness in the signal-fundamental distribution induces higher bids and therefore
Kinetic and mechanistic study on the reactions of ruthenium(II) chlorophenyl terpyridine complexes with nucleobases, oligonucleotides and DNA
In this study, we investigated the ability of Ru(ii) polypyridyl complexes to act as DNA binders. The substitution reactions of three Ru(ii) chlorophenyl terpyridine complexes, i.e. [Ru(Cl-Ph-tpy)(en)Cl]Cl (1), [Ru(Cl-Ph-tpy)(dach)Cl]Cl (2) and [Ru(Cl-Ph-tpy)(bpy)Cl]Cl (3) (Cl-Ph-tpy = 4′-(4-chlorophenyl)-2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine, en = 1,2-diaminoethane, dach = 1,2-diaminocyclohexane, bpy = 2,2′-bi
Automatic Construction of Linear Stochastic Dynamic Models For Stationary Industrial Processes with Random Disturbances Using Operating Records
We describe a new technique for automatic identification of stationary, linear systems with a single output. This class of models includes all linear, time-invariant, stochastic, difference equations driven by arbitrary inputs and having stationary, normal disturbances with rational spectra. The parameters of the model are estimated by the method of maximum likelihood. A numerical algorithm for sol
Two-scale cut-and-projection convergence; homogenization of quasiperiodic structures
We demonstrate how the problem of finding the effective property of quasiperiodic constitutive relations can be simplified to the periodic homogenization setting by transforming the original quasiperiodic material structure to a periodic heterogeneous material in a higher dimensional space. The characterization of two-scale cut-and-projection convergence limits of partial differential operators is
3D skeletal uptake of 18F sodium fluoride in PET/CT images is associated with overall survival in patients with prostate cancer
Background: Sodium fluoride (NaF) positron emission tomography combined with computer tomography (PET/CT) has shown to be more sensitive than the whole-body bone scan in the detection of skeletal uptake due to metastases in prostate cancer. We aimed to calculate a 3D index for NaF PET/CT and investigate its correlation to the bone scan index (BSI) and overall survival (OS) in a group of patients w
Smokeless tobacco (snus) is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes : Results from five pooled cohorts
Background: Smoking and nicotine exposure increase insulin resistance and the risk of type 2 diabetes. Swedish smokeless tobacco (snus) is high in nicotine, and its use is prevalent in Scandinavian countries, but few studies have investigated snus use in relation to diabetes risk. Objective: To explore the association between snus use and risk of type 2 diabetes using pooled data from five cohorts
M2-like macrophages induce colon cancer cell invasion via matrix metalloproteinases
The inflammatory milieu plays an important role in colon cancer development and progression. Previously, we have shown that tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), an important component of the tumor microenvironment, are enriched in tumors compared with normal tissue and confer a poorer prognosis. In the present study, we found that matrix metallopeptidase-9 (MMP-9), which degrades extracellular mat
Complementary III-V heterojunction lateral NW Tunnel FET technology on Si
We demonstrate for the first time a technology which allows the monolithic integration of both p-Type (InAs-Si) and n-Type (InAs-GaSb) heterojunction Tunnel FETs (TFET) laterally on a Si substrate. The lateral heterojunction nanowire (NW) structures are implemented using top-down CMOS-compatible processes combined with Template-Assisted Selective Epitaxy (TASE) [1] of the III-V materials. Nanluoguxiang: Imagined Heritage and Changing Communities
This paper focuses on Nanluoguxiang (NLGX), a historic neighbourhood in Beijing, where the author lived for 2,5 years. The neighbourhood is one of 25 conservation areas in the city, and since 2008 a popular tourist attraction among both domestic and foreign tourists. The area has a long history and many well preserved buildings, including two smaller museums. However, many aspects of the area’s ri

Straw bale : A waste from agriculture, a new construction material for sustainable buildings
Since the beginning of the 21st century, straw-bale buildings are reappearing in the world; however, their thermal performances were not thoroughly investigated up to now. The purpose of this study is to analyze thermal behavior and energy performance of a straw-bale building in Switzerland. Using Pleiades+Comfie Software, building designs have been studied to understand the best way to mitigate o
Reporting on methods to generate and purify rodent and human oligodendrocytes from different sources
Oligodendrocytes are part of the glial cells located in the central nervous system, capable of providing trophic support to neurons and ensheathing their axons. These cells can become dysfunctional under pathologic condition. Rodent and human pluripotent stem cells are inexhaustible sources for producing oligodendrocytes that can be used for disease modeling and cell replacement therapy studies. T
