This dissertation focuses on assessments concerning children and young persons in the Social Services. The aim has been to describe and analyse the compulsory care process from a social worker perspective, and to understand and explain how this affects the practice of child welfare. I have used case files from the Social Services and focus group interviews with social workers as empirical data. Th

Acute effects of D-1 and D-2-receptor agonist and antagonist drugs on somatostatin binding, inhibition of adenylyl cyclase activity and accumulation of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate in the rat striatum

A recent study carried out by our group demonstrated that exogenous dopamine increases the somatostatin (SS) receptor–effector system in the rat striatum. The present study examined the participation of the D1- and D2-dopaminergic systems in the modulation of the rat striatal SS receptor–effector system by use of the D1-receptor agonist and antagonist SKF 38393 and SCH 23390, respectively, and the

High-spin States in the A=39 Mirror Nuclei 39Ca and 39K

High-spin states of the mass A = 39 mirror pair K-39 and Ca-39 were investigated via the fusion-evaporation reaction Si-28+O-16 at 125 MeV beam energy. The GAMMASPHERE array in conjunction with the 4 pi charged-particle detector array MICROBALL and neutron detectors was used to detect gamma rays in coincidence with evaporated light particles. The results of the first high-spin study of the T-z = -

Light exotic isotopes: recent beam developments and physics applications at ISOLDE

This paper is divided in three parts: (i) the measurement of yields and decay losses of Li and Be isotopes released from a thin foil tantalum target at the CERN/ISOLDE PS-Booster; (ii) results from β-decay experiments on 12Be and 14Be, an improved half-life of 21.49(3) ms has been obtained for 12Be; (iii) the β-decay of 9C. An outline of the analysis procedure to determine the branching at high ex

The effect of pasture on starling (Sturnus vulgaris) breeding success and population density in a heterogenous agricultrual landscape in Southern Sweden

Populations of European starlings have declined over large parts of northern and western Europe during the last 20 years. It has been suggested that reduced availability of pasture in the agricultural landscape was one reason for this decline. To investigate this, breeding colonies for starlings were established in southern Sweden, in agricultural landscapes with different availabilities of pastur

Richard P. Bunge memorial lecture. Nerve injury and repair--a challenge to the plastic brain.

Repair and reconstruction of major nerve trunks in the upper extremity is a very challenging surgical problem. Today, there is no surgical repair technique that can assure recovery of tactile discrimination in the hand of an adult patient following nerve repair. In contrast, young individuals usually attain a complete recovery of functional sensibility. The outcome from nerve repair depends mainly

Genus och utbildning : ekonomisk-historiska studier i kvinnors utbildning ca 1870-1970

Popular Abstract in Swedish Avhandlingen består av tre delar. Den första, Från utbildningsmarknad till of-fentlig utbildning. Svensk flickskola 1874-1962, behandlar dels integrationen av flickornas sekundärutbildning i den offentliga utbildningsorganisationen, dels förstärkningen respektive försvagningen av denna speciellt genuskodade utbild-ning. Sekundärutbildningen har varit könssegregerad och The thesis is divided into three sections. The first, “From an education market to public education. The Swedish girls’ school 1874-1962”, deals with the integration of girls’ secondary education into the public education system, as well as with the strengthening and weakening of this special, gender-coded education. Secondary education was gender segregated and integration involved a process of s

On the modelling of turbulent flow and mixing in stirred reactors

This thesis concerns the numerical simulations and modelling of the flow structure and scalar transport in stirred reactors. For this Large Eddy Simulations (LES) have been used. The flow situation in a stirred reactor includes several flow phenomena that are not well predicted by "standard" two-equation models, e.g. swirl, stagnation points and anisotropic turbulence. Also, using LES one can obta

Geophysical investigation of glass ‘hotspots’ in glass dumps as potential secondary raw material sources

This study investigates the potential for Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) to detect buried glass ‘hotspots’ in a glass waste dump based on results from an open glass dump investigated initially. This detection potential is vital for excavation and later use of buried materials as secondary resources. After ERT, test pits (TPs) were excavated around suspected glass hotspots and physico-chem

CURRENT CONCEPTS AND MODALITIES FOR MONITORING THE FELLOW EYE IN NEOVASCULAR AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION : An Expert Panel Consensus

PURPOSE: The presence of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) in one eye is a major risk factor for the development of disease in the fellow eye. Several methods exist to help physicians monitor the fellow eye, with new technologies becoming increasingly available. METHODS: We provide an overview of modalities for nAMD monitoring, including advances in home-based options, and review

Bivalirudin Versus Heparin Monotherapy in Elderly Patients With Myocardial Infarction : A Prespecified Subgroup Analysis of the VALIDATE-SWEDEHEART Trial

BACKGROUND: Elderly patients with acute myocardial infarction undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention are at increased risk of both ischemic and bleeding complications. The optimal anticoagulation strategy in these patients is uncertain. Therefore, we compared bivalirudin to heparin monotherapy in a contemporary cohort of such patients. METHODS: A prespecified subgroup analysis of elderly pa

Typical and atypical carcinoid tumors of the lung : a clinicopathological correlation of 783 cases with emphasis on histological features

We present 783 surgical resections of typical and atypical carcinoid tumors of the lung identified in the pathology files of 20 different pathology departments. All cases were critically reviewed for clinical and pathological features and further correlated with clinical outcomes. Long-term follow-up was obtained in all the patients and statistically analyzed to determine significance of the diffe

Endogenous and Exogenous Drivers of Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia (PE), is a pregnancy related condition afflicting 3-8% of all pregnancies and a main cause of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. It is thought to originate from a malfunctioning placental that eventually leads to damage to the maternal endothelium, which in turn gives rise to hypertension and organ dysfunction. Oxidative stress holds a central role in the development, progre

The infantile hemangioma referral score : A validated tool for physicians

OBJECTIVES: Infantile hemangiomas (IHs) are common; some cases require timely referral and treatment to prevent complications. We developed and validated a reliable instrument for timely and adequate referral of patients with IH to experts by nonexpert primary physicians. METHODS: In this multicenter, cross-sectional, observational study, we used a 3-stage process: (1) development of the Infantile
