Tunable surface plasma resonance frequency in Ag core/Au shell nanoparticles system prepared by laser ablation

A method for preparation of Ag core/Au shell nanoparticles with tunable surface plasma resonance (SPR) band was presented and studied. It was found that the tunable SPR band could be significantly conducted and achieved by laser ablation to Au plate in Ag colloidal solution, leading to the formation of Ag core/Au shell structure by the deposition of Au atoms on the surface of Ag nanoparticles. Dep

Supported lipid bilayers, tethered lipid vesicles, and vesicle fusion investigated using gravimetric, plasmonic, and microscopy techniques

This article summarizes our most recent contributions to the rapidly growing field of supported lipid assemblies with emphasis on current studies addressing both fundamental and applied aspects of supported lipid bilayer (SLB) and tethered lipid vesicles (TLVs) to be utilized in sensing applications. The new insights obtained from combining the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitori

Increased levels of bacterial markers and CO2 in occupied school rooms

Our group previously demonstrated that carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in heavily occupied schools correlate with the levels of airborne bacterial markers. Since CO2 is derived from the room occupants, it was hypothesized that in schools, bacterial markers may be primarily increased in indoor air because of the presence of children: directly from skin microflora or indirectly, by stirring up dust from

Probability density functions for non-linear random waves and responses

Non-linear waves have been a research topic for a long time, but have not yet entered common ocean engineering practice. In this article the problem of calculating the probability density function (pdf) for non-linear waves is investigated. The 'saddle point approximation' is applied to a second-order wave model to estimate the pdf. The performance of the approximation is compared with the perform

Ion-ion correlation attraction in a molecular solvent.

We have performed Monte Carlo simulations for two like-charged infinite plates with counterions and solvent in between. The solvent is described at the primitive model (PM) level and also as a Stockmayer fluid. Both descriptions share the same qualitative ion correlation picture. At sufficiently high coupling, the pressure between the plates shows an attractive minimum, which is lost or reduced up

Increasing prevalence of avian poxvirus in Darwin's finches and its effect on male pairing success

Island populations harbour a comparatively species-poor pathogen community, often resulting in naïve host species that experience compromised immunity when faced with novel diseases. Over 95% of the Galápagos avifauna have survived 400 years of human settlement, yet currently face threats due to introduced diseases such as avian poxvirus. On Hawaii, declining populations of birds and even some ext

Unique cytological features and chromosome aberrations in chondroid lipoma: a case report based on fine-needle aspiration cytology, histopathology, electron microscopy, chromosome banding, and molecular cytogenetics

Chondroid lipoma is a rare, benign tumor that may mimic soft-tissue sarcoma clinically. Its histopathologic features may resemble hibernoma, myxoid liposarcoma, myxoid chondrosarcoma, and other lipomatous or chondroid neoplasms. In this study, a chondroid lipoma was analyzed by fine-needle aspiration cytology, histopathology, electron microscopy, chromosome banding, and metaphase fluorescence in s

Altered AP-1/Ref-1 redox pathway and reduced proliferative response in iNOS-deficient vascular smooth muscle cells

We previously reported that injury-induced medial vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation and neointima formation in carotid arteries of inducible nitric oxide synthase knockout ( iNOS KO) mice were significantly reduced compared with wild type (WT). However, the molecular pathway underlying such differences is not known. In this in vitro study, we discovered that the AP-1/Ref-1/thioredox

Mutated V-H genes and preferential V(H)3-21 use define new subsets of mantle cell lymphoma

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is believed to originate from a naive B cell. However, we recently demonstrated that a subset of MCL displayed mutated V-H genes. We also reported restricted use of certain V-H genes. To assess the prognostic impact of these new findings, we performed V-H gene analysis of 110 patients, revealing that 18 (16%) patients had mutated and 92 (84%) patients had unmutated V-H g

Characterization of a transient collisional Ni-like molybdenum soft x-ray laser pumped in grazing incidence

We present experimental results from an extensive investigation of a Ni-like Mo X-ray laser pumped in the transient regime and GRIP configuration (GRazing Incidence Pumping). The pump laser is a 10 Hz, 1 J, Ti:Sa laser system. The main diagnostic is a monochromatic near-field imaging system with a 1.7 micron spatial resolution that shows the soft x-ray laser source size and position relative to th

Redox chemistry of a dimanganese(II,III) complex with an unsymmetric ligand: Water binding, deprotonation and accumulative light-induced oxidation

A dinuclear manganese complex {[(Mn2L)-L-II,IIII(mu-OAc)(2)]-ClO4} has been synthesised, where L is the dianion of 2-{[bis-(pyrid-2-ylmethyl)amino]methyl}-6-{[(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2- hydroxybenzyl)(pyrid-2-ylmethyl)amino]methyl)-4-methylphenol, an unsymmetric binucleating ligand with two coordinating phenol groups. The two manganese ions, with a Mn-Mn distance of 3.498 angstrom, are bridged by the t

Neurobiology in primary headaches.

Primary headaches such as migraine and cluster headache are neurovascular disorders. Migraine is a painful, incapacitating disease that affects a large portion of the adult population with a substantial economic burden on society. The disorder is characterised by recurrent unilateral headaches, usually accompanied by nausea, vomiting, photophobia, and/or phonophobia. A number of hypothesis have em

How Can I Become a Responsible Subject? Towards a Practice-Based Ethics of Responsiveness

Approaches to business ethics can be roughly divided into two streams: aEuro(1)codes of behavior' and aEuro(1)forms of subjectification', with code-oriented approaches clearly dominating the field. Through an elaboration of poststructuralist approaches to moral philosophy, this paper questions the emphasis on codes of behaviour and, thus, the conceptions of the moral and responsible subject that a

Locus-specific multifluor FISH analysis allows physical characterization of complex chromosome abnormalities in neoplasia

Novel techniques in molecular cytogenetics have radically improved the ability to characterize genetic changes in neoplastic cells. In parallel, a rapid development in high-throughput genomics has resulted in detailed physical maps of the human genome. Combining these two fields, we have developed a method for the simultaneous visualization of several physically defined segments along a chromosome
