Emulation of dual-conjugate adaptive optics on an 8-m class telescope
In this article we present a downscaled laboratory setup emulating five natural guide stars, a layered static atmosphere and a 7.5-m aperture telescope equipped with dual-conjugate adaptive optics at a wavelength of 2.2 mum. Three reconstruction alternatives were evaluated; conventional adaptive optics, field-averaged conventional adaptive optics and dual-conjugate adaptive optics. The results wer

Bartonella spp. seroprevalence in healthy Swedish blood donors
Serum samples were collected from healthy blood donors in 5 regions in Sweden in 1999, i.e. from the local Blood Centres (collecting facilities) in Boden, Jonkoping, Lund, Skovde, and Uppsala. In total, 498 serum samples (63% males, 37% females) were received and tested by immunofluorescence assay for antibodies against B. elizabethae, B. grahamii, B. henselae (Houston-1), B. henselae (Marseille),

Induction and termination of diapause in a freshwater zooplankton community
I examined production of, and emergence from, diapausing eggs, together with planktonic dynamics of three cladoceran genera (Bosmina, Ceriodaphnia, and Daphnia) for 16 months in a shallow lake. In a complementary field experiment I manipulated environmental variables potentially important as cues for induction and termination of diapause. Ceriodaphnia and Daphnia, but not Bosmina, were dependent o

Nourishment design and evaluation: applicability of model concepts
Models can play a fundamental role while moving from nourishment projects to nourishment plans, i.e., when nourishment becomes an integral component of a coastal management strategy. Planning nourishment in the context of a multi-years management strategy requires more significant prediction skills than available in the past and an awareness of dealing with uncertainty. The present paper introduce
Mammography Screening-Factors affecting Tumour Stage and Outcome
The aim of this thesis was to investigate screening mammography in relation to factors affecting tumour stage and outcome. The main focus was on obesity, tumour biology and breast density. We hypothesized that obese and overweight women could benefit more from screening detection than normal weight women. The favourable prognosis in screening-detected women was further investigated, and we expecte
Validation of the IHE Cohort Model of Type 2 Diabetes and the Impact of Choice of Macrovascular Risk Equations.
Health-economic models of diabetes are complex since the disease is chronic, progressive and there are many diabetic complications. External validation of these models helps building trust and satisfies demands from decision makers. We evaluated the external validity of the IHE Cohort Model of Type 2 Diabetes; the impact of using alternative macrovascular risk equations; and compared the results t
Organ doses determined using a RANDO phantom for different radionuclide depositions and photon energies
Dose conversion coefficients relating the kerma free-in-air to effective dose have been studied. In order to do so a sampling scheme encompassing all the risk organs and tissues was developed for the Alderson RANDO phantom. Preliminary results are shown for some specific organs irradiated with a point source in the laboratory.
Effects of prescribed antithrombotics and other cardiovascular pharmacotherapies on all-cause mortality in patients with diabetes and atrial fibrillation - a cohort study from Sweden using propensity score analyses
Aims: To study mortality rates among patients with diabetes and concomitant atrial fibrillation (AF), prescribed different cardiovascular drugs in primary health care. Methods: Study population consisted of men (n = 1319) and women (n = 1094) aged = >= 45 years from a database including 75 primary care centres in Sweden. Cox regression analysis, with hazard ratios (HRs), 95% confidence interval (9
A setup for studies of laser-driven proton acceleration at the Lund Laser Centre
We report on a setup for the investigation of proton acceleration in the regime of target normal sheath acceleration. The main interest here is to focus on stable laser beam parameters as well as a reliable target setup and diagnostics in order to do extensive and systematic studies on the acceleration mechanism. A motorized target alignment system in combination with large target mounts allows fo
