Characterization of isoniazid-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis on the basis of phenotypic properties and mutations in katG

Forty isoniazid-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates were characterized on the basis of phenotypic properties (i.e., catalase activity, MIC of isoniazid, and growth pattern in the presence of 7 different concentrations of isoniazid) and alterations in the katG gene (codons 315 and 463). Three different growth patterns could be distinguished: concentration-dependent inhibition of growth wa

Clincal Aspects of Biological Brain Damage Markers

Biomarkers for organ damage and/or dysfuntion are used in almost all areas of medicine. The brain has eluded this technological development for some time. Recently, the S100B protein has been shown to be a promising marker of brain damage. However, before S100S can reach clinical reality, several problems must be solved. The specificity of S100B requires special investigative attention. Although t

Källare (informationsskrift i serien: Fuktsäkerhet i byggnader)

Mapping the intracellular fraction of water by varying the gradient pulse length in q-space diffusion MRI

Finite gradient pulse lengths are traditionally considered a nuisance in q-space diffusion NMR and MRI, since the simple Fourier relation between the acquired signal and the displacement probability is invalidated. Increasing the value of the pulse length leads to an apparently smaller value of the estimated compartment size. We propose that q-space data at different gradient pulse lengths, but wi

Experimental study of the moisture distribution inside a pulp sheet using MRI. Part II: Drying experiments

A spin-echo MRI sequence has been employed to measure moisture profiles during the drying of industrial never-dried pulp samples and was able to detect moisture even at very low:moisture content (6%). For the first time, moisture profiles have been measured for pulp samples approximately 2.5 mm thick with a spatial resolution of 0.15 mm under quite severe drying temperatures (up to 87 degrees C).

Forward jet production in deep inelastic scattering at HERA

The production of forward jets has been measured in deep inelastic ep collisions at HERA. The results are presented in terms of single differential cross sections as a function of the Bjorken scaling variable (xB(j)) and as triple differential cross sections d3 sigma/dx(Bj)dQ(2)dp(t)(,jet)(2), where Q(2) is the four momentum transfer squared and p(t)(,iet)(2) is the squared transverse momentum of

Myocardial Perfusion and Function: Comparative assessment by ECG, SPECT and MRI

Popular Abstract in Swedish Populärvetenskaplig sammanfattning på svenska Sjukdom i hjärtat är mycket vanligt i västvärlden. I Sverige lider 12% av befolkningen av hjärt-kärlsjukdomar. Akut hjärtinfarkt är den vanligaste enskilda dödsorsaken. Sjukdomar i hjärtats kranskärl och deras komplikationer förorsakar totalt cirka 25% av alla dödsfall i Sverige. Hjärtsjukdom beror främst på förträngningar Evaluation of myocardial perfusion and function is important in management of patients with suspected or known coronary artery disease. This thesis focuses on the use of common diagnostic methods, myocardial perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (MPS) and electrocardiography (ECG), to enhance and validate the diagnostic information. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used

Prediction of permanent deformations in asphalt concrete using the mechanistic-empirical pavement design guide

Permanent deformations, or rutting, are internationally considered to be one of the most serious distress mechanisms in asphalt pavements. Deterioration modeling is an important tool for performance prediction and diagnostics of pavements. The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (M-E PDG) model used for calculation of permanent deformation in asphalt layers was to be evaluated. It was acco

In-plane tension behaviour of masonry

The main purpose of the present work is to increase knowledge of in-plane tension behav-iour of masonry and develop a model able to describe the impact of parameters influencing cracking caused by restrained shrinkage. In the process the mechanism of load transfer between units and mortar joints is described. The influence of cohesion between units and mortar joints, unit and joint geometry and ex

Attitude towards remission induction for elderly patients with acute myeloid leukemia influences survival.

Combination chemotherapy may induce remission from acute myeloid leukemia (AML), but validated criteria for treatment of elderly are lacking. The remission intention ( RI) rate for elderly patients, as reported to the Swedish Leukemia Registry, was known to be different when comparing the six health care regions, but the consequences of different management are unknown. The Leukemia Registry, cont

Effect of flow reversal on the shear induced formation of multilamellar vesicles

The influence of rate controlled flow reversal on the transition from planar lamellae to multilamellar vesicles (MLV) using a nonionic lamellar phase consisting of 40 wt % triethylene glycol monodecyl ether (C10E3 in D2O) is investigated by means of time-resolved rheo-small-angle light and neutron scattering (SALS, SANS). Flow reversal provides the possibility to control the kinetics of the transi

Metabolic Syndrome and Breast Cancer in the Me-Can (Metabolic Syndrome and Cancer) Project

Background: Few studies have assessed the metabolic syndrome (MetS) as an entity in relation to breast cancer risk, and results have been inconsistent. We aimed to examine the association between MetS factors (individually and combined) and risk of breast cancer incidence and mortality. Methods: Two hundred ninety thousand women from Austria, Norway, and Sweden were enrolled during 1974-2005, with

Historical aspects of soil erosion in the Mejerda catchment, Tunisia

Agricultural use and related water erosion leads to significant changes in the sedimentological and hydrological characteristics of watersheds and thus means negative consequences for rural development. This research work aimed at putting present-day soil erosion of the important Mejerda catchment in to a historical context. The catchment of wadi Mejerda in northern Tunisia has experienced soil er

Food intake and meal pattern in IAPP knockout mice with and without infusion of exogenous IAPP

Objective. The current study used islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) knockout mice (KO mice) to investigate the physiological role of IAPP in the regulation of food intake (FI). Material and methods. FI and body weight were measured in KO and wild-type (WT) mice for 27 weeks. In an additional short-term experiment, IAPP (25 pmol . kg(-1)min(-1)) was infused subcutaneously for 3 days in KO and WT mic

A 0.8mm2 9.6mW Implementation of a Multicarrier Faster-Than-Nyquist Signaling Iterative Decoder in 65nm CMOS

This paper presents a decoder for multi-carrier modulated signals employing Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling. FTN signaling is a method of improving bandwidth efficiency at the expense of higher processing complexity in the transceiver. The decoder can switch between orthogonal and FTN signaling modes and exploits channel properties to improve bandwidth efficiency. The decoder is fabricated in

Dynamic Phase Diagram of a Nonionic Surfactant Lamellar Phase

The dynamic phase diagram of triethylene glycol dodecyl ether (C12E3) in D2O was determined for 40, 50, and 60 wt % of surfactant. The shear flow effect on the nonionic lamellar phase was investigated as a function of temperature and concentration. The transition from planar lamellae (L-alpha)-to-multilamellar vesicles (MLVs) was characterized by means of rheology, rheo-small-angle neutron and lig
