Tolbutamide stimulates exocytosis of glucagon by inhibition of a mitochondrial-like ATP-sensitive K+ (KATP) conductance in rat pancreatic A-cells

1. Capacitance measurements were used to examine the effects of the sulphonylurea tolbutamide on Ca2+-dependent exocytosis in isolated glucagon-secreting rat pancreatic A-cells. 2. When applied extracellularly, tolbutamide stimulated depolarization-evoked exocytosis 4.2-fold without affecting the whole-cell Ca2+ current. The concentration dependence of the stimulatory action was determined by intr

Oil Spills in Öresund - Hazardous Events, Causes and Claims

Öresund is one of the areas in the world with most ship movements. More than 40,000 ships pass through the sound in the direction north-south or the opposite every year. Other ships/ferries frequently cross the sound in the direction east-west or west-east. The ships carry goods and/or passengers in huge volumes. Since Öresund is a quite narrow sound with a difficult navigation situation, many ris

A simple model for the arterial system

We present a simple model for the arterial part of the cardiovascular system, based on Poiseuille flow constrained by the power dissipated into the cells lining the vessels. This, together with the assumption of a volume-filling network, leads to correct predictions for the evolution of vessel radii, vessel lengths and blood pressure in the human arterial system. The model can also be used to find

Small x phenomenology: summary and status

The aim of this paper is to summarize the general status of our understanding of small-x physics. It is based on presentations and discussions at an informal meeting OIL this topic held in Lund, Sweden, in March 2001. This document also marks the founding of an informal collaboration between experimentalists and theoreticians with a special interest in small-x physics. This paper is dedicated to t

The eta(c)(2980) formation in two-photon collisions at LEP energies

eta(c)(2980) production in gammagamma interactions has been detected via its decays into K(s)(0)K(-/+)pi(-/+), K+K-K+K- and K(+)K(-)pi(+)pi(-) in the data taken with the DELPHI detector at LEP1 and LEP2 energies. The two-photon radiative width averaged over all observed decay channels is Gammagammagamma=13.9+/-2.0(stat.)+/-1.4(syst.)+/-2.7 (BR) keV. No direct decay channel eta(c)-->pi(+)pi(-)pi(+)

Clinical impact of breakpoint position within M-bcr in chronic myeloid leukemia

We have analyzed the M-bcr breakpoint position in 133 Philadelphia-positive chronic myeloid leukemia patients and correlated the findings with clinical, hematologic, and cytogenetic data. We also investigated the splicing pattern of the BCR-ABL mRNA in 30 patients, using reverse transcriptase PCR. No statistically significant differences were found between breakpoint position within M-bcr and clin

Outcomes following a programme for lifestyle changes with people with hypertension

AIM: The purpose of the study was to explore the effects of using a structured nursing intervention programme in hypertension care. BACKGROUND: Counselling on lifestyle changes to address hypertension helps patients reduce risk factors such as smoking, high alcohol consumption, overweight, dyslipidemia, negative stress and physical inactivity. DESIGN: The study was performed as a pre-test-post-tes

Expression and regulation of CCL25 and its role in T cell localization to and function within the small intestine

Earlier studies have demonstrated an important role for the chemokine CCL25, and its receptor CCR9, in the generation of the small intestinal lymphocyte compartment. The work in this thesis was aimed at determining how CCL25 is regulated within the small intestinal mucosa, and what potential role it plays in T cell localization to and function within this site. We have identified epithelial cells

Alcohol intake as a risk factor for fracture

High intakes of alcohol have adverse effects on skeletal health, but evidence for the effects of moderate consumption are less secure. The aim of this study was to quantify this risk on an international basis and explore the relationship of this risk with age, sex, and bone mineral density (BMD). We studied 5,939 men and 11,032 women from three prospectively studied cohorts comprising CaMos, DOES,

Some Extensions of Poincaré-Bendixson Theory Applied to a Resonant Converter.

Popular Abstract in Swedish I denna avhandling studeras en resonant omvandlare. Vissa av dessa gIn this thesis existence and uniqueness of limit cycles are shown for a resonant converter, by extending Poincaré-Bendixson theory to non-smooth vector fields. We discuss relevant control theory and the role of simulations.

Prevalence of thyroid hormone abnormalities in elderly patients with symptoms of organic brain disease.

Analysis of the serum concentrations of free thyroid hormones (fT3, fT4) and thyrotropin (TSH) in 173 psychogeriatric patients (94 females and 79 males, mean age 79 +/- 8 years) disclosed that the hormone levels were related to sex, psychiatric diagnosis, medication and the presence of nonthyroid illness (NTI). Subnormal concentrations of thyroid hormones and/or TSH were found in 25% of the patien

Greening Earth? Science, Politics and Land Use in the Kyoto Negotiations

Can a deliberate enhancement of the natural uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide in forests and agricultural lands contribute to the efforts to mitigation anthropogenic climate change? This is a question that has generated a great deal of debate and controversy since the inception of the multilateral climate negotiations in the early 1990s. This thesis offers an analysis of how this debate has pla

CMOS On-Chip Clock for Digital Signal Processors

An on-chip clock for frequencies up to 190 MHz is presented. This clock generator can be used for application specific digital signal processors which are clocked faster than the off-chip system clock. It is useful for both processors with a few cycles per sample or for high frequency bit-serial processors which need a large number of cycles

Föreställningen om den rThis dissertation in anthropology of religion focuses on images of Tibet, among Westerners as well as among Tibetans. Based on approximately one year of fieldwork in the former British Hill station, it also deals with the politics of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) and some of its political and social implications for the exiled Tibetan youth living in Dharamsala, India. The Western perc

An extended probabilistic approach of plant vital attributes: an application to European pollen records at 0 and 6 ka

Aim This paper presents a probabilistic method of pollen spectra analysis. The method relies on a pollen taxon characterization using biotic and abiotic plant attribute modes, and their occurrence in a given pollen spectrum at a specific site. This type of analysis can provide an interpretation, which can lead to the reconstruction of the biome and, to an extent, of the abiotic conditions at the s
