Delayed neuromotor recovery and increased memory acquisition dysfunction following experimental brain trauma in mice lacking the DNA repair gene XPA.

Object: This study investigates the outcome after traumatic brain injury (TBI) in mice lacking the essential DNA repair gene xeroderma pigmentosum group A (XPA). As damage to DNA has been implicated in neuronal cell death in various models, the authors sought to elucidate whether the absence of an essential DNA repair factor would affect the outcome of TBI in an experimental setting. Methods: Th

Adaptor Protein LNK Is a Negative Regulator of Brain Neural Stem Cell Proliferation after Stroke.

Ischemic stroke causes transient increase of neural stem and progenitor cell (NSPC) proliferation in the subventricular zone (SVZ), and migration of newly formed neuroblasts toward the damaged area where they mature to striatal neurons. The molecular mechanisms regulating this plastic response, probably involved in structural reorganization and functional recovery, are poorly understood. The adapt

Around-the-Clock, Rapid Diagnosis of Influenza by Means of Membrane Chromatography Antigen Testing Confirmed by Polymerase Chain Reaction *

One rapid membrane chromatography test and 2 immunofluorescence tests were compared with polymerase chain reaction as tools for the diagnosis of influenza in 277 patients treated in an emergency department. The sensitivity on days 1-3 of symptoms was 71% for the rapid membrane chromatography test, 70% for the first immunofluorescence test, and 79% for the second immunofluorescence test. Rapid test

Erik 90!

Introduction to a seminar and a book with four articles and also a revised bibliography celebrating Professor Emeritus Erik Cinthio's 90 years birthday in 2011.

Breast tomosynthesis: Accuracy of tumor measurement compared with digital mammography and ultrasonography.

Background: Mammographic tumor size measurement can be difficult because breast structures are superimposed onto a two-dimensional (2D) plane, potentially obscuring the tumor outline. Breast tomosynthesis (BT) is a 3D X-ray imaging technique in which low-dose images are acquired over a limited angular range at a total dose comparable to digital mammography (DM). These low-dose images are used to m

A 2.4-GHz CMOS monolithic VCO with an MOS varactor

A 2.4-GHz CMOS VCO is presented employing pMOS transistors as voltage-controlled capacitances and on-chip hollow spiral inductors. The design was implemented in a standard digital 0.8 mu m CMOS process and exhibits a 15% tuning range at 2.5 V supply voltage and 9 mA supply current. Phase-noise measurements show a phase-noise of about -118 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz from the carrier.

Three non-pilot based time- and frequency estimators for OFDM

Time-domain maximum-likelihood (ML) estimators of time and frequency offsets are derived for three orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal models: a pulse-shaped one-shot OFDM signal, a stream of multiple OFDM signals and an OFDM signal in a dispersive channel environment. We then develop structures to simplify their implementation. Simulation results show the relative performance
