The ESR1 (6q25) Locus Is Associated with Calcaneal Ultrasound Parameters and Radial Volumetric Bone Mineral Density in European Men

Purpose: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified 6q25, which incorporates the oestrogen receptor alpha gene (ESR1), as a quantitative trait locus for areal bone mineral density (BMDa) of the hip and lumbar spine. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of this locus on other bone health outcomes; calcaneal ultrasound (QUS) parameters, radial peripheral quantitative comp

Some small-emittance light-source lattices with multi-bend achromats

Two examples of low-emittance light-source lattices are discussed. Both use similar building blocks consisting of 7-bend achromats. The small emittances generated by these lattices are further reduced by the introduction of insertion devices (IDs), resulting in beam emittance values ranging from 0.2 to 0.9 nm rad, depending on the number of achromats chosen. The two examples discussed here are rin

Short-term culturing of teleost crystalline lenses combined with high-resolution optical measurements.

Culturing whole lenses is a frequently used method for studying regulatory events on the lens in controlled environments. The evaluation methods used often fall under two categories, molecular or optical. The main benefit from optical measurements is that they directly detect changes in the lens' main function, i.e. refracting light. However, these measurements often have rather low resolution or

Recovery and preservation of phenols from olive waste in ethanolic extracts

BACKGROUND: The current trend of upgrading undervalued agricultural by-products involves the recovery of natural antioxidants. The purpose of this study was to recover phenols from fresh olive mill wastewater (OMW) with their dispersion in 85 mL ethanol per 100 mL and to investigate the effect of processing parameters on the phenol content and antioxidant capacity of the extracts. Moreover, all th

Measurements of jet vetoes and azimuthal decorrelations in dijet events produced in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV using the ATLAS detector

Additional jet activity in dijet events is measured using pp collisions at ATLAS at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, for jets reconstructed using the anti-k(t) algorithm with radius parameter R = 0.6. This is done using variables such as the fraction of dijet events without an additional jet in the rapidity interval bounded by the dijet subsystem and correlations between the azimuthal angles of t

What is bet-hedging, really?

Bet-hedging is defined as a strategy that reduces the temporal variance in fitness at the expense of a lowered arithmetic mean fitness. After a few technical points, we will here argue that this definition of bet-hedging is badly suited for models with density- and/or frequency-dependent fitness. A strict interpretation cannot be employed; possibly, a modified definition is necessary.

Probing the role of stochasticity in a model of the embryonic stem cell - heterogeneous gene expression and reprogramming efficiency

Background: Embryonic stem cells (ESC) have the capacity to self-renew and remain pluripotent, while continuously providing a source of a variety of differentiated cell types. Understanding what governs these properties at the molecular level is crucial for stem cell biology and its application to regenerative medicine. Of particular relevance is to elucidate those molecular interactions which gov

Budesonide added to formoterol contributes to improved exercise tolerance in patients with COPD

Background: Breathlessness and exercise intolerance frequently impact the daily life of patients with COPD. Methods: This double-blind, multicentre, three-period crossover study randomised 111 patients with COPD (mean age 64 years, mean FEV1 38% of predicted normal) to budesonide/formoterol 320/9 mu g, formoterol 9 mu g or placebo, twice daily for 1 week, following a 1-week run-in period with 1-we

Classification, incidence and survival analyses of children with CNS tumours diagnosed in Sweden 1984-2005

Aim: Primary tumours in the central nervous system (CNS) are the second most common malignancy in childhood after leukaemia. Sweden has a high incidence and a high-survival rate in international comparative studies. This has raised the question about the type of tumours included in the Swedish Cancer registry. We therefore compared international data to the Swedish Childhood Cancer registry. Metho

Multiscale Modeling of the Active Site of [Fe] Hydrogenase: The H-2 Binding Site in Open and Closed Protein Conformations

A series of QM/MM optimizations of the full protein of [Fe] hydrogenase were performed. The FeGP cofactor has been optimized in the water-bound resting state (1), with a side-on bound dihydrogen (2), or as a hydride intermediate (3). For inclusion of H4MPT in the closed structure, advanced multiscale modeling appears to be necessary, especially to obtain reliable distances between CH-H4MPT+ and th

Suppression of away-side jet fragments with respect to the reaction plane in Au plus Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV

Pair correlations between large transverse momentum neutral pion triggers (p(T) = 4-7 GeV/c) and charged hadron partners (p(T) = 3-7 GeV/c) in central (0%-20%) and midcentral (20%-60%) Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV are presented as a function of trigger orientation with respect to the reaction plane. The particles are at larger momentum than where jet shape modifications have been obs

The role of different reproductive barriers during phenotypic divergence of isopod ecotypes.

The question of how diverging populations become separate species by restraining gene flow is a central issue in evolutionary biology. Assortative mating might emerge early during adaptive divergence, but the role of other types of reproductive barriers such as migration modification have recently received increased attention. We demonstrate that two recently diverged ecotypes of a freshwater isop

Search for lepton flavour violation at HERA

A search for second and third generation scalar and vector leptoquarks produced in ep collisions via the lepton flavour violating processes ep -> mu X and ep -> tau X is performed by the H1 experiment at HERA. The full data sample taken at a centre-of-mass energy root s = 319 GeV is used for the analysis, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 245 pb(-1) of e(+)p and 166 pb(-1) of e(-)p coll

Fruit and vegetable intake and mortality from ischaemic heart disease: results from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Heart study

Aims A higher intake of fruits and vegetables has been associated with a lower risk of ischaemic heart disease (IHD), but there is some uncertainty about the interpretation of this association. The objective was to assess the relation between fruit and vegetable intake and risk of mortality from IHD in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Heart study. Methods and

Health-related quality of life in family members of patients with an advanced cancer diagnosis: A one-year prospective study

Background: Receiving a cancer diagnosis affects family members as well as the person diagnosed. Family members often provide support for the sick person in daily life out of duty and love, and may not always think of their own vulnerability to illness. To individualise support for them, family members who are most at risk for becoming ill must be identified. The aim of this study was to investiga

Unsymmetrical alkyne binding to a triruthenium centre: Oxidative-addition of diphenyl ditelluride to the furyne cluster [Ru-3(CO)(7)(mu-H)(mu(3)-eta(2)-C4H2O){mu-P(C4H3O)(2)}(mu-dppm)]

Oxidative-addition of PhTe2Ph to the furyne cluster [Ru-3(CO)(7)(mu-H)(mu(3)-eta(2)-C4H2O){mu-P(C4H3O)(2)}(mu-dppm)] (1) results in the isolation of four complexes; (i) the previously reported 54-electron cluster [Ru-3(CO)(6)(mu(3)-Te)(2)(mu-TePh)(2)(mu-dppm)] (5) which results from elimination of trifuryl phosphine, (ii) the furenyl cluster [Ru-3(CO)(5)(mu-eta(2)-C4H3O){mu-P(C4H3O)(2)}(mu-TePh)(2
