The need to differentiate between language meaning and content of conceptions of subject matter.

Empirical results show that there is often no identity between the meaning of expressions used by students in expressing their understanding of subject matter and the meaning of those expressions in collectively shared meaning systems, social languages or discourses, and especially not the meaning system represented by the subject matter theory expected to be learned. There is also often a lack of

Robust Frequency-Selective Knowledge-Based Parameter Estimation for NMR Spectroscopy

In many magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) applications, one strives to estimate the parameters describing the signal to allow for more precise knowledge of the analyte. Typically, MRS signals are well modelled as a sum of damped sinusoids that has properties that are partly known a priori. FREEK, a recently proposed subspace-based parameter estimation method allows for inclusion of such prior

Robotics and ISA 88 Batch Control Standard - Opportunities and Challenges

Manufacturing processes can generally be classified as continuous, discrete or batch. An industrially well accepted way of structuring and controlling batch processes is presented in the ISA 88 standard (also known as IEC 61512). In exploring how this standard also could be used for discrete manufacturing processes, especially in robotic applications, different challenges and opportunities are fou

Implementation of the Biofuels Directive in the European Union

The implementation of the Biofuels Directive (2003/30/EC) in the 25 member states is assessed against the background of implementation theory in this paper. The aim is to identify and analyze implementation problems for the purpose of suggesting a way forward for biofuels policy in the European Union. Three main patterns of policy implementation are observed: effective implementation, formal compl

Lactoferrin Interactions with Periodontitis-associated Bacteria - Aspects of Adhesion-counteracting Mechanisms

Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Prevotella intermedia and Prevotella nigrescens are associated with periodontal diseases. Adhesion of these bacteria to host tissue surfaces is a prerequisite for their establishment. The surfaces in the oral cavity are bathed by secretions which emanate from salivary glands and from gingival crevicular area. Lactoferrin is one of the antimicrobial glycoprotei

Is the Hierarchical Structure of Articles 31 and 32 of the Vienna Convention Real or Not? Interpreting the Rules of Interpretation

In the practice of modern international law, if a certain understanding is advanced as the correct interpretation of a treaty provision, the proposition is assessed using the rules of interpretation laid down in the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, Articles 31–33. This article is concerned with the relationship held in such an interpretation process between the preparatory work of a

Construction and Control of an Educational Lab Process - The Gantry Crane

In this paper, we describe the construction and control of a gantry crane that is used in courses at the Department of Automatic Control, Lund university. Two different models of the crane are developed. A thorough example of path following, including on-line time-varying input/state-transformations and LQG control, used in a laboratory exercise is shown together with experimental results. Time-op

Design of Frequency Selective Windows for Improved Indoor Outdoor Communication

The use of low emissivity windows degrades radio communication. This paperpresents design, manufacturing and test measurements for an energy savingwindow that is transparent to GSM, GPS and 3G radio wave frequencies.A frequency selective structure (FSS) is used in the metallic coating of thewindow to provide the needed transparency that ranges from 900MHz to2GHz. The periodic pattern used for the

Mammonist Capitalism – Ubiquity, Immanence, Acceleration

The paper attempts at a general understanding of contemporary capitalism and some of its social and mental consequences. It works through combinations and variations of concepts from classical and contemporary social theory. Some key concepts are Mammonism, acceleration, ubiquity, self-dynamics, precariat, inertia, conformity, flexibility, specter of uselessness. The text refers to classical moder

Floating-point buffer compression in a unified codec architecture

This paper presents what we believe are the first (public) algorithms for floating-point (fp) color and fp depth buffer compression. The depth codec is also available in an integer version. The codecs are harmonized, meaning that they share basic technology, making it easier to use the same hardware unit for both types of compression. We further suggest to use these codecs in a unified codec architec
