Studies on the Load Range of an HCCI Engine using In-Cylinder Pressure, Ion Current and Optical Diagnostics

Internal combustion engines are continuously developed towards decreased hazardous emissions and lower fuel consumption. The homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine is a promising concept which combines the best features of the Diesel engine and the spark ignition (SI) engine. The efficiency is in the range of the Diesel engine and the emissions are low and comparable to the emission

A Control Theory Approach for Analyzing the Effects of Data Errors in Safety-Critical Control Systems

Computers are increasingly used for implementing controlalgorithms in safety-critical embedded applications, such asengine control, braking control and flight surfacecontrol. Addressing the consequent coupling of control performancewith computer related errors, this paper develops a composite computerdependability/control theory methodology for analyzing the effectsdata errors have on control syst

Universal Lossless Source Coding Techniques for Images and Short Data Sequences

In this thesis various topics in universal lossless source coding are discussed and analyzed. The main focus in this work is on lossless data compression of grayscale still images. Such images are, for example, frequently occurring in medical imaging. Based on theoretical considerations and empirical observations new compression algorithms are presented that are, in terms of compression performan

Solidarity Lost and Found

This book chapter discusses some trends in critical theory and activist aesthetics in contemporary feminist performing arts in Sweden. The 2000s have witnessed at least two “turns” in feminist theory, namely the affective turn and the social, or as it is called here, the solidarity turn. The status of poststructuralist theory has been widely debated and Marxist, class-based analyses have returned

Design Configuration with Architectural Objects

The paper presents the intermediate results of an ongoing research project with the aim to develop concepts and tools for architectural design in industrialized house-building. Architectural design aims to enable different “situations” in the built environment involving people, behaviour, experience and environment, with desired technical, functional and aesthetic properties. "Situations” may be r

Knowledge Creation and Sharing – Complex Methods of Inquiry and Inconsistent Theory

Recent research and practice have led to the development of relatively complex methods for inquiry which can be applied by human analysts. However, it has appeared until recently that these could not be supported by software tools, since the limitations of traditional mathematical algorithms constrained their development. We suggest a model which lays the foundations for the development of softwar

The significance of sexuality and cyst formation in the life-cycles of four marine dinoflagellate species

Sexuality and cyst formation were studied in the marine dinoflagellate species Gymnodinium catenatum Graham, Gymnodinium nolleri Ellegaard ? Moestrup, Alexandrium catenella (Whedon et Kofoid) Balech, and Lingulodinium polyedrum (Stein) Dodge. The study included the morphological characterization of sexual stages and processes, the time and description of meiosis, the study of the length and regula

Full-field measurements of strain localisation in sandstone by neutron tomography and 3D-volumetric digital image correlation

Recent studies have demonstrated that the combination of x-ray tomography during triaxial tests (”in-situ” tests) and 3D- volumetric Digital Image Correlation (3D-DIC) can provide important insight into the mechanical behaviour and deformation processes of granular materials such as sand. The application of these tools to investigate the mechanisms of failure in rocks is also of obvious interest.

The association between a non-ionic microemulsion and hydrophobically modified PEG. A rheological investigation

The thickening effect of a hydrophobically modified polymer in an O/W microemulsion is investigated. The hydrophobically modified polymer is a triblock copolymer, alkyl end-capped poly(ethylene glycol) and the microemulsion is based on a non-ionic surfactant, pentaethylene oxide dodecyl ether (C12E5) and decane. The rheological properties vary strongly with microemulsion droplet volume fraction, w
