Modeling of Protein Folding and Genetic Networks

Models for potein folding are developed and applied to peptides and small proteins with both α-helix and β-sheet structure. The energy functions, in which effective hydrophobicity forces and hydrogen bonds are taken to be the two central terms, are sequence-based and deliberately kept simple. The geometric representations of the protein chains are, by contrast, detailed and have torsion angles as

Bilden av den "hotfulla ungdomen" : Om ungdomsproblem och fastställandet och upprätthållandet av samhällets moraliska gränser

The main aim of my dissertation is to investigate som conceptions, power relations, and practices in the discourse of youth problems. I have studied some of the actors that are involved in the social constructing of the "juvenile delinquent" such as the police, the judical system, the social service, the media, the general public and last but not least, the young people themselves. The bulk of my

Soluble and Plant Available Phosphorus in Acid Soils

The P availability and solubility differ between soils and plants seem to have different ways of utilising the P present. The many P fractions present in soil interact and are closely related to another and transformations may easily occur. Due to this more P than the soluble fraction is available to plants. Different plant species utilise the P in soil differently; the relationship between the pl

Manipulation of Nanoparticles for Quantum and Single-Electron Devices

In this thesis a technique to manipulate nanoparticles with an atomic force microscope (AFM) is presented. Particles in the size range of 5-500 nm could be positioned in arbitrary two-dimensional patterns on different surfaces by mechanically pushing them with the AFM tip. The technique which is material-independent can be applied to any type of nanometer-sized particles or objects that are free t

The effects of quantifier size on the construction of discourse models

Sentences with quantified expressions involve mental representations of sets of individuals for which some property holds (the reference set), as well as of sets for which the property does not hold (the complement set). Both sets can receive discourse focus with negative quantifiers, while the reference set is strongly preferred with positive quantifiers, complement set focus however being possib

The historical evolution of languages has been more than once influenced by the sheer influence of scholars who re-channeled some linguistic phenomena or simply consecrated aspects of colloquial usage. This happened in the history of Romanian language when the Latinist scholars cleansed the lexicon and parts of morphology of various non-Latin borrowings and derivations whereas they revived or inse

The Rise of Procedural Rule of Law in the European Union - Historical and Normative Foundations

The rule of law in the EU is not only substantive and formal, it is also procedural. From the early years of European integration until now – and this through the interpretative lens of either the terse Article 31 ECSC or the robust Article 19 TEU - the procedural rule of law has always been thriving and jolting in the case law of both the European Coal and Steal Community (ECSC) Court and the Cou

Einsteins bekräftelse

År 1919 reste astronomer söderut för att fånga en solförmörkelse och bekräfta Einsteins allmänna relativitetsteori. In 1919 astronomers journeyed south to catch a solar eclipse and to check up on Einsteins theory of general relativity.

Preliminary Results of Combining Thread-Level Speculation and Just-in-Time Compilation in Google’s V8

We present the first implementation of Thread-Level Speculation in combination with Just-in-time compilation. The implementation is done in Google’s V8, a well-known JavaScript engine, and evaluated on 15 popular web application executing on 2, 4, and 8 core computers. Our results show an average speedup of 2.9 on 4 cores, without any JavaScript code modifications. Further, we have found that the

The humans of ancient Hermione : the necropolis in the light of bioarchaeology

Bioarchaeology has the potential to substantially inform about ancient lifeways through osteological analyses of the remains of the once living individuals. This article provides insights of the demography and health of the people of ancient Hermione (Geometric-Roman period). A minimum number of 85 individuals from the Hermione necropolis was osteologically analyzed. Although the analysis was limi
