Re4As6S3, a thio-spinel-related cluster system.

We have synthesized a new compound with formula Re4As6S3 and characterized its crystal structure by Rietveld powder diffraction methods. Re4As6S3 crystallizes in an face-centered cubic unit cell, space group F (4) over bar 3m (no. 216), with lattice constant a = 9.8608(1) Angstrom and Z = 4. The rhenium atoms form tetrahedral clusters linked via tetrahedral arsenic clusters to produce an NaCl-type

Observations on the Failure of Stent-Grafts in the Aortic Arch.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: The results of endovascular stent-grafts in the abdominal aorta and descending thoracic aorta have been encouraging. Expanding the use of thoracic stent-grafts in to the aortic arch has been associated with increasing numbers of complications. Recently isolated cases of stent-graft collapse have been reported. METHODS: This was a multi-centre European case series. Data was

Targeting of hormone replacement therapy immediately after menopause

The aim of this study was to model the effect of short (3-year) treatments with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) at the time of menopause on the risk of osteoporotic fracture, and to assess the impact of strategies to target high-risk individuals. From the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture risk, treatment that increased bone mineral density at the hip by 6% over untreat

Cytogenetic and fluorescence in situ hybridization characterization of chromosome 8 rearrangements in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas

Structural rearrangements of chromosome 8 are frequently encountered in squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck (HNSCC). These aberrations often affect the centromeric region, resulting in the formation of isochromosome i(8q) and whole arm translocations. Some tumors may display structural rearrangements of 8p23. To characterize further the localization of the breakpoints in such rearrangeme

Nitric oxide (NO) production in the upper airways is decreased in chronic sinusitis

The nasal concentration of nitric oxide (NO) was measured by chemiluminescence in healthy volunteers 3-68 years of age, and in patients suffering from common cold and chronic sinusitis. The concentration of NO in healthy subjects, 233.2 +/- 66.8 ppb (mean +/- SD), was found to be relatively independent of age and body size. The measured levels of NO did not differ between healthy volunteers and co

ISO 12006-2 and IFC – prerequisites for coordination of standards for classification and interoperability

There are two major candidates for Core Ontologies for the construction and facilities management sector, the ISO 12006-2 Framework for classification of information, and the Industry Foundation Classes, IFC. ISO 12006-2 has been developed to harmonize different national and regional classification systems. It is applied world wide in the development of classification systems for everyday use in t

A new approach to capillary electrochromatography: Disposable molecularly imprinted nanoparticles

Nanoparticle phases have provided a new technique for CEC that avoids the time-consuming procedure for packing capillary columns. Frits are not required in the separation channel, and because the pseudo-stationary phase is discarded after every separation, each run proceeds with an entirely new phase. Moreover, the monolithic molecularly imprinted polymer permits a high sample load to be used.

Priorities in optimisation of medical X-ray imaging - A contribution to the debate

A simplistic approach to optimising medical imaging is to use the lowest effective dose to the patient that does not jeopardise a correct diagnosis. With limited resources and over 1000 different types of X-ray examinations, it is not always easy to set the right priorities and to decide how to perform the optimisation. Recent research shows that the 'Rose model' for the detection of specific stru

Master of Science in Risk Management and Safety Engineering at Lund University, Sweden - Executive Summaries

To obtain a Master of Science in Risk Management and Safety Engineering at Lund University the students must write a master’s thesis based on a final project. The efforts correspond to full-time studies for one semester, i.e. 30 ETCS credits or 20 Swedish credits. The students can choose to write the report in Swedish, i.e. their mother tongue, or in English. In addition to the thesis a student is

Cross section measurements of charged pion photoproduction in hydrogen and deuterium from 1.1 to 5.5 GeV

The differential cross sections for the gamma n ->pi(-)p and the gamma p ->pi(+)n processes were measured at Jefferson Lab. The photon energies ranged from 1.1 to 5.5 GeV, corresponding to center-of-mass energies from 1.7 to 3.4 GeV. The pion center-of-mass angles varied from 50(degrees) to 110(degrees). The pi(-) and pi(+) photoproduction data both exhibit a global scaling behavior at high energi

Neisseria meningitidis undergoes PilC phase variation and PilE sequence variation during invasive disease

Neisseria meningitidis colonizes the upper respiratory tract (URT), enters the blood stream, and reaches the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). In the present study, we show that bacteria isolated from the URT adhere better to human epithelial cells, compared with bacteria from blood or CSF, which suggests that important changes of virulence-associated proteins take place during bacterial dissemination.
