A novel approach to image coding using off-line foveation controlled by multiple eye-tracking measurement

In this paper we investigate the feasibility of using a wavelet transform to compress individual frames in a video sequence controlled by points of gaze coordinates collected from different viewers by an eye-tracker. Unlike most eye-tracking controlled compression approaches, we make the compression "off-line" and not in real time. Our results indicate that the distribution of gaze-points is "comp

Monasticism and the Philosophical Heritage

Abstract in Undetermined This article examines the rise of monasticism in Late Antiquity. It reveals the close link between traditional Greek society and culture and the rise of monasticism, based on historical evidence and the literary character of the early monastic texts. While not denying the innovative character of much of early monastic life, the rich variety of forms of monasticism, and the

Higher-Order Neural Network Based Root-Solving Controller for Adaptive Tracking of Stable Nonlinear Plants

The use of Intelligent control schemes in Nonlinear Model Based Control (NMBC) has gained widespread popularity. Neural Networks, in particular, have been used extensively to model the dynamics of nonlinear plants. However, in most cases, these models do not lend themselves to easy maneuvering for controller design. Therefore, a common need is being felt to develop intelligent control strategies t

Logical Knowledge Representation of Regulatory Relations in Biomedical Pathways

Knowledge on regulatory relations, in for example regulatory pathways in biology, is used widely in experiment design by biomedical researchers and in systems biology. The knowledge has typically either been represented through simple graphs or through very expressive differential equation simulations of smaller sections of a pathway. As an alternative, in this work we suggest a knowledge represe

Regulation and role of epiphytic nitrification and denitrification in macrophyte-dominated systems

This thesis examines mechanisms regulating bacterial nitrification and denitrification in attached microbial communities on surfaces of aquatic macrophytes. It also evaluates the role of epiphytic nitrification and denitrification for the nitrogen turnover in macrophyte-dominated nutrient-rich freshwaters. Epiphytic nitrification is promoted in light and epiphytic denitrification occurs mainly in

The Role of Projected Anatomy, Random Noise, and Spatial Resolution on Clinical Image Quality in Digital Mammography

Due to the recent advances in digital detector technology, there is an increasing trend in the use of digital mammography (DM) as a concurrent modality with screen-film mammography (SFM). In order to fully realize its potential, the components of a DM system should be optimized with respect to clinical image quality in order for clinicians to make accurate diagnoses. The studies in this work invol
