Assessment of the genetic and clinical determinants of fracture risk : Genome wide association and mendelian randomisation study

Objectives To identify the genetic determinants of fracture risk and assess the role of 15 clinical risk factors on osteoporotic fracture risk. Design Meta-analysis of genome wide association studies (GWAS) and a two-sample mendelian randomisation approach. Setting 25 cohorts from Europe, United States, east Asia, and Australia with genome wide genotyping and fracture data. Participants A discover

Genetic sharing with cardiovascular disease risk factors and diabetes reveals novel bone mineral density loci

Bone Mineral Density (BMD) is a highly heritable trait, but genome-wide association studies have identified few genetic risk factors. Epidemiological studies suggest associations between BMD and several traits and diseases, but the nature of the suggestive comorbidity is still unknown. We used a novel genetic pleiotropy-informed conditional False Discovery Rate (FDR) method to identify single nucl

Does comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) in an outpatient care setting affect the causes of death and the quality of palliative care? A subanalysis of the age-FIT study

Purpose: The purposes of this study were to retrospectively study whether comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) given to community-dwelling old patients with high health care usage has effects regarding: (1) the cause of death and (2) the quality of the provided palliative care when compared to patients without CGA-based care. Method: This study includes secondary data from a randomised control

An engineering approach to mass transfer performance for hollow fibre modules with shell-side axial feed flow

An generalised engineering approach based on the analogy between mass and heat transfer is proposed to benchmark the shell-side mass transfer coefficient for axial flow in hollow fibre modules from low to moderate packing densities. The trends obtained by this approach are similar to those of correlations found in the literature and differences between the approaches are discussed. Furthermore, ef

Response to treatment in patients with partial androgen insensitivity due to mutations in the DNA-binding domain of the androgen receptor

The androgen insensitivity syndrome is a disorder caused by deficient function of the androgen receptor, characterized by varying degrees of undermasculinization in karyotypic males. We have identified four mutations in the androgen receptor gene, in the region encoding the DNA-binding domain of the protein. Two mutations, R607X and R615G, were found in patients with complete insensitivity to andr

Functional characterisation of mutations in the ligand-binding domain of the androgen receptor gene in patients with androgen insensitivity syndrome

Five mutations in the ligand-binding domain of the androgen receptor gene were identified in patients with complete (A765T, C784Y, R831X and M895T) or partial (R830G) androgen insensitivity, A765T and R831X have been reported previously whereas the other three mutations are novel. Receptors carrying these mutations were transiently expressed in COS-1 cells, and androgen binding and capacity to tra

A 200 ka glaciation history from NW Svalbard

Late Quaternary sedimentary units at Kongsfjordhallet, NW Svalbard, represent five cycles of glaciations and subsequent deglaciations during high relative sea levels. The high sea-level events are interpreted as glacioisostatically induced and imply preceding regional glaciations, which we constrain in time by luminescence and radiocarbon ages to just prior to ~195 ka, ~130 ka, ~85 ka, ~60 ka and

Islamophobia, Representation and the Muslim Political Subject : A Swedish Case Study

Applying media analysis, this article addresses how the exclusion of Muslim women from fields of common public interest in Sweden, such as partaking as an active citizen, is materialized. Focusing on a specific event—the cancellation of a screening of Burka Songs 2.0—and the media coverage and representation of the cancellation, it discusses the role of discourses of gender equality, secularity anApplying media analysis, this article addresses how the exclusion of Muslim women from fields of common public interest in Sweden, such as partaking as an active citizen, is materialized. Comparison of dermal vs internal light administration in human lungs using the TDLAS-GASMAS technique—Phantom studies

Oxygen and water vapor content, in the lungs of a 3D-printed phantom model based on CT-images of a preterm infant, is evaluated using Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) in Gas in Scattering Media Absorption Spectroscopy (GASMAS), that is, the TDLAS-GASMAS technique. Oxygen gas is detected through an absorption line near 764 nm and water vapor through an absorption line near 820 nm

Longitudinal cerebrospinal fluid biomarker measurements in preclinical sporadic Alzheimer's disease : A prospective 9-year study

INTRODUCTION: Ascertainment of the pattern and temporal change of biomarkers in preclinical (asymptomatic) sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD) will increase knowledge about early pathogenesis and facilitate interventional therapeutic trials.METHODS: In this prospective longitudinal study, repeated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collections and cognitive evaluations were performed in cognitively healthy e

Asteroider

The asteroid 3122 Florence flew past the Earth in early September 2017 and astronomers managed to capture images showing that it had two moons in orbit around it.In this planetarium show we discuss the asteroids in our Solar System, what we know about them, how large they are, how many there are and what we could do if we discovered one on a collision course with Earth.

NLO QCD corrections to electroweak Higgs boson plus three jet production at the LHC

The implementation of the full next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to electroweak Higgs boson plus three jet production at hadron colliders such as the LHC within the Matchbox NLO framework of the Herwig++ event generator is discussed. We present numerical results for integrated cross sections and kinematic distributions.
