Människa och religion i klangens värld. Nutida vägar mot en teologisk musikestetik

The article presents and discusses a number of recent scholarly attempts to investigate theological and/or religious dimensions of music. On the basis of critical interpretations of these (Anglophone and German) contributions the article proposes an interdisciplinary approach to a theological aesthetics of music. Such a methodology necessitates any "theologizing" to respect the singular qualities

Alpha-1-microglobulin: Innate defence against pathological oxidation

Oxidative stress has been implicated as an important factor in the progression of many diseases. An imbalance in the redox-system may cause oxidation of cells and molecules, which might subsequently lead to tissue damage. The research presented in this thesis has focused on elucidating a possible involvement of the human protein alpha-1-microglobulin in the defence against pathological oxidation.

Effects of the Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone Antagonist Ganirelix on Normal Micturition and Prostaglandin E-2-Induced Detrusor Overactivity in Conscious Female Rats

BACKGROUND: Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonists have been reported to have beneficial effects on lower urinary tract symptoms in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to investigate the effects of ganirelix, a GnRH receptor antagonist, on bladder function and detrusor overactivity (DO) in female rats. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Female Sprague-Dawl

Reassessment of hydrogen tolerance in Caldicellulosiruptor saccharolyticus

Abstract in UndeterminedBackgroundCaldicellulosiruptor saccharolyticus has the ability to produce hydrogen (H2) at high yields from a wide spectrum of carbon sources, and has therefore gained industrial interest. For a cost-effective biohydrogen process, the ability of an organism to tolerate high partial pressures of H2 (PH2) is a critical aspect to eliminate the need for continuous stripping of

Spatial encoding in spinal sensorimotor circuits differs in different wild type mice strains

Background: Previous studies in the rat have shown that the spatial organisation of the receptive fields of nociceptive withdrawal reflex (NWR) system are functionally adapted through experience dependent mechanisms, termed somatosensory imprinting, during postnatal development. Here we wanted to clarify 1) if mice exhibit a similar spatial encoding of sensory input to NWR as previously found in t

Carbon Dioxide and Glucose Affect Electrocortical Background in Extremely Preterm Infants

OBJECTIVES: To investigate if PaCO2 and plasma glucose levels affect electrocortical activity. METHODS: Ours was an observational study of 32 infants with a gestational age of 22 to 27 weeks. We performed simultaneous single-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) and repeated blood gas/plasma glucose analyses during the first 3 days (n = 247 blood samples with corresponding EEG). Interburst intervals

The novel MAPT mutation K298E: mechanisms of mutant tau toxicity, brain pathology and tau expression in induced fibroblast-derived neurons

Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) consists of a group of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by behavioural and executive impairment, language disorders and motor dysfunction. About 20-30 % of cases are inherited in a dominant manner. Mutations in the microtubule-associated protein tau gene (MAPT) cause frontotemporal dementia and parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17 (FTDP-17T). Here w

Protest activity, social incentives, and rejection sensitivity: Results from a survey experiment about tuition fees

People may engage in protest activity either because of collective incentives or selective incentives, or a combination of them. In this study we focus on the selective incentives part of the calculus of political participation, particularly the impact of the social dimension. We hypothesize that people will participate in demonstrations or other forms of protest, to a higher extent if they ar

Iranian and Swedish adolescents: differences in personality traits and well-being

Introduction. This study addresses the need to further contextualize research on well-being (e.g., Kjell, 2011) in terms of cross-cultural aspects of personality traits among adolescents and by examining two different conceptualizations of well-being: subjective well-being (i.e., life satisfaction, positive and negative affect) and psychological well-being (i.e., positive relations with others, en

Interplay of Touschek scattering, intrabeam scattering, and rf cavities in ultralow-emittance storage rings

The latest generation of storage ring-based light sources employs multibend achromat lattices to achieve ultralow emittance. These lattices make use of a large number of weak bending magnets which considerably reduces the amount of power radiated in the dipoles in comparison to power radiated from insertion devices. Therefore, in such storage rings, parameters such as emittance, energy spread, and

Electrostatic Chameleons in Biological Systems.

Due to large equilibrium fluctuations of protons at physiological pH, the orthophosphate ion as well as the imidazole group on histidine substantially regulate their charge upon approaching charged interfaces. This implies that these-and comparable-ions function as electostatic "proximity switches" when interacting with lipid membranes, DNA, proteins, etc. Using straightforward statistical thermod

Breast cancer screening in an urban, Swedish population Aspects of non-attendance, interval cancers and over-diagnosis

Service screening with mammography was implemented in Sweden in the late 80's, following the results from trials in Sweden and abroad. A high rate of attendance, a high diagnostic accuracy and treatment in accordance with established guidelines are key circumstances for an effective screening programme. These factors have to be continuously monitored. One trial was carried out 1976-86 in the city

The axial N-base has minor influence on Co-C bond cleavage in cobalamins

We have investigated the properties of cobalamin complexes with imidazolate using the density functional B3LYP method, In particular, we have compared imidazolate (Imm) with imidazole and 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole (DMB), and studied how constraints in the axial Co-N bond length may affect the strength of the Co-C bond. The results show that the optimum Co-N-Imm bond is similar to0.2 Angstrom short
