Analysis of fire barriers with respect to fires with combustible gases and liquids
Fires including flammable gases and/or liquids differ from typical residential fires where the fuel is mainly composed of solid combustibles. The traditional ISO 834 curve was established to represent the timetemperature curve for a fully developed fire. However for combustible gases the type of thermal exposure might be substantially different and therefore other curves have been developed such a
Conference Report : Danish Romanticism Takes to the Hills
A report on a panel convened by the Nordic Association for Romantic Studies at the 'Romanticism Takes to the Hills' conference at Edge Hill University (UK), 29 April 2017
From Conflict to Compromise : The importance of mediation in Swedish work stoppages 1907-1927
Institutions for prevention and resolution of labor market conflicts were introduced all over the world in the early twentieth century. In this paper we analyze the impact of mediation on compromise outcomes in Swedish labor market conflicts, using a dataset of geo-coded strikes and lockouts from 1907 to 1927. Causality is identified by using the distance from the mediator's residence to the confl
The exosome associates cotranscriptionally with the nascent pre-mRNP through interactions with heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins
Eukaryotic cells have evolved quality control mechanisms to degrade aberrant mRNA molecules and prevent the synthesis of defective proteins that could be deleterious for the cell. The exosome, a protein complex with ribonuclease activity, is a key player in quality control. An early quality checkpoint takes place cotranscriptionally but little is known about the molecular mechanisms by which the e
Influences on gene expression in vivo by a Shine-Dalgarno sequence
The Shine-Dalgarno (SD+: 5'-AAGGAGG-3') sequence anchors the mRNA by base pairing to the 16S rRNA in the small ribosomal subunit during translation initiation. We have here compared how an SD+ sequence influences gene expression, if located upstream or downstream of an initiation codon. The positive effect of an upstream SD+ is confirmed. A downstream SD+ gives decreased gene expression. This effe
European Banks and the Rise of International Finance: The Post-Bretton Woods Era
European Banks and the Rise of International Finance examines the historical origins of the financialised world we live in by analysing the transformations in world finance which occurred in the decade from the first oil crisis of 1973, until the debt crisis of 1982. This a crucial and formative decade for understanding the modern financial landscape, but it is still mostly unexplored in economic

Mechanosensing Using GaInP Nanowires
Mechanical forces exists in many cellular processes, including cell proliferation, migration, rearrangement and differentiation. The transformation of cancer cells from normal cells, cancer metastasis and cell rearrangement during morphogenesis all involve changes in cellular mechanical forces. Although there are some studies about normal cell and cancer cell force measurements, a direct compariso
Active listing and more consultations in primary care are associated with reduced hospitalisation in a Swedish population
Background: Healthcare systems are complex networks where relationships affect outcomes. The importance of primary care increases while health care acknowledges multimorbidity, the impact of combinations of different diseases in one person. Active listing and consultations in primary care could be used as proxies of the relationships between patients and primary care. Our objective was to study ho
Paradoxical increase in neuronal DNA fragmentation after neuroprotective free radical scavenger treatment in experimental traumatic brain injury
The mechanisms and role of nerve cell death after traumatic brain injury (TBI) are not fully understood. The authors investigated the effect of pretreatment with the oxygen free radical spin trap alpha-phenyl-N-tert-butyl-nitrone (PBN) on the number of neurons undergoing apoptosis after TBI in rats. Apoptotic cells were identified by the TUNEL method combined with the nuclear stain, Hoechst 33258,
Physical neglect during childhood alters white matter connectivity in healthy young males
Background: Childhood adversity (CA) leads to greater vulnerability for psychopathology by causing structural as well as functional brain abnormalities. Recent findings on gray matter effects point towards the importance of identifying CA outcome as a function of different CA types, varying in the dimensions of threat and deprivation. Using diffusion tensor imaging, we investigate whether differen

Geoengineering : neither economical, nor ethical—a risk–reward nexus analysis of carbon dioxide removal
This article addresses a central debate in combatting climate change: whether we should focus on reducing CO2 emissions or on removing the emitted CO2 from the atmosphere. We favor the former by arguing against the economic viability of the carbon dioxide removal (CDR) branch of geoengineering. This is of course not a question of either or, but we argue that the perception of CDR as a viable optio
Epidemiology of primary systemic vasculitis in children : a population-based study from southern Sweden
Objectives: To estimate the annual incidence rate of paediatric primary systemic vasculitis (PSV) in a defined geographical area in southern Sweden. Methods: Potential cases of PSV [IgA vasculitis (IgAV, Henoch–Schönlein purpura), Kawasaki disease (KD), granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), polyarteritis nodosa
Theoria, praxis and poiesis : Theoretical considerations on the circulation of knowledge in everyday life
Day2day : Investigating daily variability of magnetic resonance imaging measures over half a year
Background: Most studies of brain structure and function, and their relationships to cognitive ability, have relied on inter-individual variability in magnetic resonance (MR) images. Intra-individual variability is often ignored or implicitly assumed to be equivalent to the former. Testing this assumption empirically by collecting enough data on single individuals is cumbersome and costly. We coll

In vivo dose verification of IMRT treated head and neck cancer patients
An independent in vivo dose verification procedure for IMRT treatments of head and neck cancers was developed. Results of 177 intracavitary TLD measurements from 10 patients are presented. The study includes data from 10 patients with cancer of the rhinopharynx or the thyroid treated with dynamic IMRT. Dose verification was performed by insertion of a flexible naso-oesophageal tube containing TLD
