Design/methodology/approach – Using a wide range of national, regional, and industry roadm

Evidence for scale- and disturbance-dependent trait assembly patterns in dry semi-natural grasslands

1. The mechanisms driving nonrandom assembly patterns in plant communities have long been of interest in ecological research. Competing ecological theories predict that coexisting species may either be more functionally dissimilar than expected by chance (with functional divergence' mainly reflecting niche differentiation) or be functionally more similar than expected (with functional convergence'

Altered DNA methylation and differential expression of genes influencing metabolism and inflammation in adipose tissue from subjects with type 2 diabetes.

Genetics, epigenetics and environment may together affect the susceptibility for type 2 diabetes (T2D). Our aim was to dissect molecular mechanisms underlying T2D using genome-wide expression and DNA methylation data in adipose tissue from monozygotic twin pairs discordant for T2D and independent case-control cohorts. In adipose tissue from discordant twins, we found decreased expression of genes

Reactivity of Bis(pyridyl)-N-alkylaminato Methylpalladium Complexes toward Ethylene: Insights from Experiment and Theory

A series of novel neutral and cationic methylpalladium complexes bearing N-alkyl-2,2'-dipyridylaldiminato ligands were prepared and characterized. In the presence of ethylene, the cationic complexes were active as dimerization catalysts, producing a mixture of 1- and 2-butenes. A Pd-ethyl pi-ethylene species was identified as the catalyst resting state by low-temperature spectroscopic and DFT stud

King's Parkinson's disease pain scale, the first scale for pain in PD: An international validation.

Pain is a key unmet need and a major aspect of non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). No specific validated scales exist to identify and grade the various types of pain in PD. We report an international, cross-sectional, open, multicenter, one-point-in-time evaluation with retest study of the first PD-specific pain scale, the King's PD Pain Scale. Its seven domains include 14 items, each

A modified Drug Attitude Inventory used in long-term patients in sheltered housing.

The self-report Drug Attitude Inventory (DAI), in 30- and 10-item versions, provides unique information of clinical relevance for monitoring treatment adherence among people diagnosed with schizophrenia. The primary purpose of this paper was to evaluate the 10-item version among patients living in sheltered housing. Data were collected among 68 persons living in sheltered housing, most of them (82

Impaired regional left ventricular strain after repair of tetralogy of fallot

Purpose: To test the potential of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in early detection of left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in patients with pulmonary regurgitation and normal LV ejection fraction after repair of tetralogy of Fallot. Materials and Methods: Patients (n = 18) with repaired tetralogy of Fallot and pulmonary regurgitation were prospectively recruited. Healthy volunteers (n = 10) were u

Genetic risk factors for ischaemic stroke and its subtypes (the METASTROKE Collaboration): a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies

Background Various genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been done in ischaemic stroke, identifying a few loci associated with the disease, but sample sizes have been 3500 cases or less. We established the METASTROKE collaboration with the aim of validating associations from previous GWAS and identifying novel genetic associations through meta-analysis of GWAS datasets for ischaemic stroke a

Influence of dehulling pretreatment on physicochemical properties of Gleditsia sinensis Lam. gum

The seeds of Gleditsia sinensis Lam., widespread in China, are an important source of galactomannans. G. sinensis gum was extracted from whole seeds using baking, boiling water and acid dehulling pretreatment, respectively. The physicochemical properties of the three isolated G. sinensis gums were studied to evaluate three pretreatment methods. The results illustrated that the properties of G. sin

Development of macrolide resistance in Mycoplasma pneumoniae-infected Swedish patients treated with macrolides.

Background: The proportion of Mycoplasma pneumoniae isolates carrying point mutations in the 23S region of the genome associated with macrolide resistance has increased. We evaluated the probability of developing M. pneumoniae macrolide resistance mutations during macrolide treatment. Methods: M. pneumoniae strains from initial and follow-up oropharyngeal samples from 38 Swedish patients were test

Bedside Diagnosis of Mitochondrial Dysfunction After Malignant Middle Cerebral Artery Infarction

The study explores whether the cerebral biochemical pattern in patients treated with hemicraniectomy after large middle cerebral artery infarcts reflects ongoing ischemia or non-ischemic mitochondrial dysfunction. The study includes 44 patients treated with decompressive hemicraniectomy (DCH) due to malignant middle cerebral artery infarctions. Chemical variables related to energy metabolism obtai

Landlubbers to leviathans: evolution of swimming in mosasaurine mosasaurs

Incremental stages of major evolutionary transitions within a single animal lineage are rarely observed in the fossil record. However, the extraordinarily complete sequence of well preserved material spanning the 27-Myr existence of the marine squamate subfamily Mosasaurinae provides a unique exception. By comparison with extant and extinct analogs, the tail morphology of four mosasaurine genera i

On the Representation of Functions with Gaussian Wave Packets

Abstract in UndeterminedWe introduce Gaussian wave packets in pursuit of representations of functions, in which the representation is invariant under translation, modulation, scale, rotation and anisotropic dilation. Properties of both continuous and discrete representations are discussed. For the discrete (two-dimensional) case, we develop fastalgorithms for the application of the analysis and syn

Targeting smooth muscle microRNAs for therapeutic benefit in vascular disease.

In view of the bioinformatic projection that a third of all protein coding genes and essentially all biological pathways are under control of microRNAs (miRNAs), it is not surprising that this class of small RNAs plays roles in vascular disease progression. MiRNAs have been shown to be involved in cholesterol turnover, thrombosis, glucose homeostasis and vascular function. Some miRNAs appear to be

Exosome and microvesicle mediated phene transfer in mammalian cells.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), e.g. exosomes and microvesicles, emerge as new signaling organelles in the exchange of information between cells at the paracrine and systemic level. It is clear that these virus like particles carry complex biological information that can elicit a pleiotropic response in recipient cells with potential relevance in physiology as well as in cancer and other pathologica

Evaluation of the Mechanical Properties of PMMA Reinforced with Carbon Nanotubes - Experiments and Modeling

The effective mechanical properties of polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were evaluated by means of two approaches: experiments and a micromechanical model. With various concentrations of CNTs, two specimen fabrication processes were examined: hot pressing (HP) and injection molding (IM). Experiments included a series of uniaxial tensile tests guided by an ASTM

Genome-wide association study on differentiated thyroid cancer.

Context:Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) have identified associations with polymorphisms at 2q35 (DIRC3), 8p12 (NRG1), 9q22.33 (FOXE1) and 14q13.2 (NKX2-1). However, most of the inherited genetic risk factors of DTC remain to be discovered. Objective:Our objective was to identify additional common DTC susceptibility loci.Design:We conducted a GWAS in a

The CCSD(T) Model With Cholesky Decomposition of Orbital Energy Denominators

A new implementation of the coupled cluster singles and doubles with approximate triples correction method [CCSD(T)] using Cholesky decomposition of the orbital energy denominators is described. The new algorithm reduces the scaling of CCSD(T) from N-7 to N-6, where N is the number of orbitals. The Cholesky decomposition is carried out using simple analytical expressions that allow us to evaluate
