Erythema Migrans in Primary Health Care

Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most common vector-borne disease in the northern hemisphere, and southern Sweden is a highly endemic area. In over 70% of the cases, LB is represented by the non-disseminated cutaneous form erythema migrans (EM). This thesis has its focus on EM from a primary health care perspective in southern Sweden, including aspects on epidemiology, the clinical picture, gender dif

Synthesis of poly(styrene-graft-ethylene oxide) by ethoxylation of amide group containing styrene copolymers

Graft copolymers containing poly(ethylene oxide) side chains on a polystyrene backbone have been synthesized. Styrene copolymers synthesized by free radical mechanism and containing between 5 and 15 mol % acrylamide or methacrylamide were used as backbones. The amide groups in the copolymers were ionized by using potassium tert-butoxide or potassium naphthalene, and grafting was achieved by utiliz

Schizophrenia - progressive and massive decline in response readiness by episodes

Objective: To relate the pattern of neuropsychological impairments among schizophrenic patients to case history data and disease characteristics in a cross-sectional study of unselected patients, and to integrate these data with two previous longitudinal studies of neuropsychological impairments among schizophrenic patients. Method: One hundred consecutive schizophrenic patients were studied with

Multilevel analysis of systolic blood pressure and ACE gene I/D polymorphism in 438 Swedish families - a public health perspective

Background: Individuals belonging to the same family share a number of genetic as well as environmental circumstances that may condition a common SBP level. Among the genetic factors, the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene I/D polymorphism appears as a possible candidate as it might influence both SBP and the pharmacological effect of ACE inhibitors. We aimed to combine genetic epidemiology

Production Ergonomics: Identifying and managing risk in the design of high performance work systems

Denna avhandling presenterar en forskningsansats att 1) identifiera och kvantifiera arbetsplatsens riskfaktorer för MSDs, 2) identifiera hur dessa riskPoor ergonomics in production systems can compromise performance and cause musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which pose a huge cost to society, companies, and afflicted individuals. This thesis presents a research trajectory through the problem space by: 1) Identifying and quantifying workplace risk factors for MSDs, 2) Identifying how these risks may relate to production strategies, and 3) Develo

Mollisianitrile, a new antibiotic from Mollisia sp A59-96

Mollisianitrile (1), a new antibiotic was isolated from the fermentation broth of Mollisa sp. A59-96 together with the two known isocoumarins 2 and 3. 1 exhibited antimicrobial, cytotoxic, and phytotoxic activities. 1 contains a reactive propiolonitrile moiety which is believed to be responsible for its antibiotic activities. Upon incubation with L-cysteine the biological activity was lost.

High prevalence of osteoarthritis 14 years after an anterior cruciate ligament tear in male soccer players: a study of radiographic and patient relevant outcomes.

Objective: To identify the consequences of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in a cohort of male soccer players 14 years after the initial injury with respect to radiographic knee osteoarthritis and patient relevant outcomes. Methods: Of 219 male soccer players with an ACL injury in 1986, 205 (94%) were available for follow up after 14 years; 75% of the cohort (154/205) answered mailed que

Dynamic speed adaptation based on information technology - a theoretical background

Knowledge on the factors influencing driver speed-behaviour, the relationship between speed and traffic safety and means to influence speed behaviour is systematised. Expert judgements and the high proportion of injury accidents show that improved speed adaptation has the largest safety potential in the following situations: - Road surface-, visibility and weather affected situations (e.g. slipper

European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) calibration study: rationale, design and population characteristics

The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), which covers a large cohort of half a million men and women from 23 European centres in 10 Western European countries, was designed to study the relationship between diet and the risk of chronic diseases, particularly cancer. Information on usual individual dietary intake was assessed using different validated dietary assessm

Reduction of the error floor of MSK by nonlinear frequency discriminator

We consider the error floor of binary frequency-shift keying (FSK) due to intersymbol interference in time-dispersive mobile radio channels, with a limiter-discriminator-integrator detector. The errors are caused by bursts in the instantaneous frequency. We propose and verify that a nonlinear frequency discriminator can achieve zero error floor for pure FSK by clipping off these bursts. For filter

Energy absorption of free rare gas clusters irradiated by intense VUV pulses of a free electron laser

As one of the first experiments at the free electron laser of the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) the Coulomb explosion of Xenon clusters irradiated with high intensity pulses at a wavelength of 98 nm has been observed. Classical trajectory calculations have been performed in order to illuminate the energy absorption process. Comparison with typical parameters in the infrared regime shows that above bar

A method to determine dynamic loads on spur gear teeth and on bearings

A method is described which can be used to calculate dynamic gear tooth force and bearing forces. The model includes elastic bearings. The gear mesh stiffness and the path of contact are determined using the deformations of the gears and the bearings. This gives contact outside the plane-of-action and a time-varying working pressure angle. In a numerical example it is found that the only important
