Modes of propagation of electromagnetic pulses in open dispersive circular waveguides

Modes of propagation of electromagnetic pulses in open circular waveguides are investigated systematically. Core and cladding both consist of simple (linear, homogeneous, isotropic), dispersive materials modeled by temporal convolution with physically sound susceptibility kernels. Under these circumstances, pulses cannot propagate along the guide unless the sum of the (first) initial derivatives of

Measuring macroeconomic exposure: The case of Volvo Cars

Volvo Cars' economic exposure to exchange rates and other macroeconomic variables is estimated using quarterly cash flows as the firm's target variable. We discuss first several issues relating to management's view of the macroeconomic environment, as well as the firm's objective and structure. These issues must be addressed before multiple regression analysis can be implemented with the purpose o

On the quality factor of a low-loss parallel-plate resonator based on complementary metamaterials

Several proposals have been made during the last ten years on size-independent resonators by using metamaterials for phase compensation. In this paper, we present an estimate of the quality factor of a simple parallel-plate resonator, based on realistic assumptions such as linear, passive, causal, time-translational invariant metamaterials, and lossy walls. It is found that the quality factor of t

Dissipation in Frequency Selective Structures

Dissipation in Frequency Selective Structures (FSS) of aperture/slot type is studied. The FSS consists of an arbitrary number of aperture layers and dielectric layers. An aperture layer consists of a conducting plate with a periodic array of apertures, with arbitrary cross-section. The dissipation in an FSS is due to losses in the dielectric material, and losses due to finite conductivity in the me

Handling of ectopic beats in heart rate variability analysis using the heart timing signal

The problem of analyzing heart rate variability in the presence of ectopic beats is revisited. Based on the IPFM model and the closely related heart timing signal, a new technique is introduced which corrects for the occasional presence of such beats. The correction technique, which involves the occurrence times of a certain number of beats preceding the ectopic, is computationally very efficient.

Control Design for a Bilinear System. Reachable Sets and Exact Linearization

A bilinear system model of a continuous tank reactor from a biotechnology application (F. Mandenius et al., 1987) is studied. The concentrations of the substrate sugar and the product ethanol were measured on-line and utilized to control the flow-rate through the fermenter. The system can be integrated analytically making it possible to describe the reachable sets. Limited controllability is found

Zooplankton responses to threats from UV and predation

Ultraviolet radiation (UV) has been present longer than any biological life, and during the development of life the radiation intensities were initially high. Eventually a vital ozone layer developed, but despite that this layer screens out most of the high energy wavelengths, some still enter the biosphere and is potentially harmful to life on earth. This thesis investigates the effects of combin

Development of IDF-curves for tropical india by random cascade modeling

Efficient design of urban drainage systems is based on statistical analysis of past rainfall events at fine time scales. However, fine time scale rainfall data are usually lacking in many parts of the world. A possible way forward is to develop methods to derive fine time scale rain intensities from daily observations. This paper applied cascade-based disaggregation modeling for generation of fine

An Intelligent Surveillance System

This paper presents the outline, goal, achievements, and work in progress of the hardware image processing projectat the Digital-ASIC group at Lund institute of technology (LTH).The project attempts to automate a surveillance system for indoormonitoring. This includes motion segmentation, image filtering, feature extraction, tracking, and classification. Hardware accel-erators for segmentation and f
