Normalization of cohesive laws for quasi-brittle materials

Analytical relations to describe experimentally measured traction-separation laws are often expressed in dimensionless quantities. The traction and the separation are commonly normalized using the cohesive strength and a length measure, respectively. The ratio between the fracture energy and the cohesive strength is often used as a length measure. An alternative length measure is the ratio between

Parametric image segmentation of humans with structural shape priors

The figure-ground segmentation of humans in images captured in natural environments is an outstanding open problem due to the presence of complex backgrounds, articulation, varying body proportions, partial views and viewpoint changes. In this work we propose classspecific segmentation models that leverage parametric max-flow image segmentation and a large dataset of human shapes. Our contribution

Degradation potentials of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from thawed permafrost peat

Global warming can substantially affect the export of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from peat-permafrost to aquatic systems. The direct degradability of such peat-derived DOC, however, is poorly constrained because previous permafrost thaw studies have mainly addressed mineral soil catchments or DOC pools that have already been processed in surface waters. We incubated peat cores from a palsa mir

Intelligent systems in health care : A socio-technical view

This chapter reflects on the relationship between various stakeholders in the health-care industry and intelligent medical systems. It takes into consideration the potential impact that intelligent systems have on health care. The aim of the chapter is to emphasise a set of decisive factors for the successful deployment of intelligent systems in health care including the individual needs of patien

Continuous optical 3D printing of green aliphatic polyurethanes

Photosensitive diurethanes were prepared from a green chemistry synthesis pathway based on methacrylate-functionalized six-membered cyclic carbonate and biogenic amines. A continuous optical 3D printing method for the diurethanes was developed to create user-defined gradient stiffness and smooth complex surface microstructures in seconds. The green chemistry-derived polyurethane (gPU) showed high

Mot en posthumanistisk pedagogik i neurocentrismens tidevarv. Exemplet ADHD och den 'bökiga' boken

AbstractThis presentation is based on my article (Un)becoming Dysfunctional: ADHD and How Matter Comes to Matter (2016). The main theme of the article is to problematize the biomedical model of the so-called neuropsychiatric disorder Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Various neuropsychiatric disorders are a common feature today, not least in educational contexts where ADHD is a comm

Effects on leisure activities and social participation of a case management intervention for frail older people living at home : A randomised controlled trial

Frailty causes disability and restrictions on older people's ability to engage in leisure activities and for social participation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a 1-year case management intervention for frail older people living at home in Sweden in terms of social participation and leisure activities. The study was a randomised controlled trial with repeated follow-up

Assessment of Mitral Valve Repair With Exercise Echocardiography : Artificial Chordae vs Leaflet Resection

Abstract: Mitral valve (MV) repair with artificial chordae (AC) or leaflet resection (LR) is associated with good hemodynamics at rest. The aim of this study was to compare these techniques in terms of exercise capacity and echocardiographic parameters of hemodynamics at rest and peak exercise. We conducted a study in 2015 of 56 patients, who had undergone surgery for degenerative posterior mitral

Managing profits and professionalism in the Swedish school system

During the last 25 years the elementary school sector in Sweden has undergone radical change due to decentralization and deregulation. The logic of professionalism in the organizational structure of the public professional bureaucracy has been challenged, giving way for more of market logic. In tandem, at least from year 2000, the results in the PISA ranking have declined dramatically, leading the

McGee's Counterexample to the Ramsey Test

Vann McGee has proposed a counterexample to the Ramsey Test. In the counterexample, a seemingly trustworthy source has testified that p and that if not-p, then q. If one subsequently learns not-p (and so learns that the source is wrong about p), then one has reason to doubt the trustworthiness of the source (perhaps even the identity of the source) and so, the argument goes, one has reason to doub

Measuring hypnotizability is an integral part of hypnosis research and is also relevant for predicting effectiveness of hypnosis-based therapies. The Elkins Hypnotizability Scale (EHS) was designed to meet the needs of modern hypnosis research and clinical practice. Reliability, validity, and normative data were explored by subjecting 230 participants to the EHS and Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibilit

User acceptance of cost-effective energy and carbon emissions optimization in building renovation.

To meet EU energy and climate targets, energy efficiency of the existing building stock must be drasticallyimproved. Within IEA ECB Annex 56 one of the best practice energy renovations is a group of multi-familybuildings in Sweden, recently thoroughly renovated. Residents' perception of renovations and appraisal ofimplemented measures were captured by interviews with tenants and a literature revie

Mapping Film-World Relations to Reality : A New Conceptual Cartography

In order to distinguish various film-worlds among themselves and from our intersubjective, shared reality I propose to introduce two parameters: warpedness and enfoldednes. The various ratios between these two parameters serve to create what I call »the film-world map«. The time-imageʼs embeddedness within the temporal dimension is what I mean by strong enfoldedness. A world that is enfolded is a
